MOthers Day Fiesta in Asuncion

shari - 5-11-2008 at 09:08 AM

Mother's Day is one of the biggest fiestas of the year and certainly the one that women look forward to the most. We get the day off work and the towns put on a huge fiesta with a dinner, entertainment, raffle, and in some places free beer and a dance. In Asuncion, it is a wild and crazy event where normally subdued conservative tea totaller women who rarely go out all get together with no men or kids allowed. This year there were over 450 ladies packed into the disco and everyone had a super great time dancing the day away. Everyone won a prize...which were fantastic, blenders, juicers, fans, coffe makers, irons, etc etc....and the high school girls passed out beer for hours on end. Any mother wishing to participate in this amazing fiesta should make a point of being in mexico with a mexican family on mothers day. Here are some pictures of our wonderful day.

Halfway through the party, our illustrious mayor had to do a beer run.....now THAT's what mayors are for! A good time was had by all and we have the hangovers to prove it! Happy Mother's Day ladies...wish you were here!

Igualamente, (hope I spelled that correctly!) The same to you Shari! My favorite Mother's day was when we lived in Punta Banda. The children put on a wonderful day for us at Cody's school, one that I will never forget.

Thank you for sharing your traditions and your town with us. Enjoy your day.

You are soooo right sharky....I thought it was awesome that from the dance floor all you had to do was hold up your can and one of the girls would come a runnin with a cold one and take your empty! Now THAT is service! a bit too good....but it sure was bastante divertido! A TODA MADRE!

They still do. It's a really big deal, what with performances by the kids, gifts for every Mom, and a wonderful festive spirit. Just what Anna Jarvis had in mind 100 years ago, before See's and FTD. Many happy moms.

Looking at these pictures almost makes me wish I was a mom. Any excuse to dance and drink beer.

Goodness, now that is the way to celebrate mothers day, this gypsy might have to be there next mothers day....!;)

Yeah, it's pretty neat...no Hallmark cards anywhere in sight...the families don't have to worry about buying Mom anything because the tradition is that the government sponsored party provides the "stuff"...and it's one special day where all the mothers (and some wanna be moms too) get together for some wonderful female bonding....as my canadian amiga Suzanna witnessed. The sisterhood or mothers lives on here.

As always your post of the beautiful Asuncion and all the great people make me a little jealous. I can't wait to experience it all for myself. Happy Mothers Day to all(belated).

the mayor gets my vote....any guy who carts three full cases at a time and dares to enter a womans party gets my vote.....
