2008 Baja 500 (Link to Official Results added)

David K - 5-11-2008 at 10:06 AM

We arrived late for the Baja Pits meeting yesterday, but chatted with Carlos about the course... which STILL isn't posted on the SCORE web site (as of this morning).

For the first time in many years, it will go into the desert: from Ensenada to the Pine Forest then over The Summit and drop down into the desert to Cohabuzo Jcn., to Borrego Wash, back west via San Matias Pass, NOT go down to Mike's Sky Rancho, west to the beach then back north to Ensenada.

Scroll down to see the course map, added... and a link to the live-action GPS map so you can follow your favorite racer around Baja!

Hopefully the map will be posted tomorrow. We are waiting to discuss rider sections and chase stratgey.

Gadget - 5-11-2008 at 01:56 PM

Sorry I missed you David, I left about 11:30.

Entries are pretty light at 271 when I looked yesterday. Last year for the 500 at this time they had gone over 400.

Let us know what your plans are.

David K - 5-11-2008 at 04:24 PM

Thanks Will...

Elizabeth and I wanted to visit with you and Leslie... but between Saturday morning routine and the traffic from Oceanside to El Cajon, we didn't arrive until about 12:30. We were surprised that Roy wasn't still there... but we did have him here for dinner the other night when he brought the photos up for me to post. So, we had a chance to get up to date on Roy's trip then.

Edguero - 5-11-2008 at 07:59 PM

So the pass through Erindira (sp) could not be on the course?
Just asking cause I don't have a map handy.

David K - 5-12-2008 at 08:35 AM

Edguero, no map on SCORE's site this morning... However, if the race pops out from Valle Trinidad to cross Hwy. 1 just south of San Vicente heading to the coast... then it would indeed pass through Ejido Erendira on the way north to Ensenada, if it follows the beach.

Gadget - 5-12-2008 at 11:23 AM

From a very reliable source, the race WILL NOT be going through Santo Tomas. There would be no way to run Erindera without doing S.T. Course slightly bypasses Mikes and heads back to Ojos. This is why it is headed over the Summit to Cohobuzo to make the mileage.

The treats from the cops there regarding the Riviera TT were stated as a concern.

Go to racedez site to research that whole story if interested.

TMW - 5-12-2008 at 05:54 PM

Looks like a fun course. Not much new stuff. Coming up the hill to San Matias I think hasn't been run in a while. Not much hwy, which is good. I can't remember the last time they ran the summit in a 500 race. They were going to do a loop by going over the summit and back up a lower summit just to the south in 95 or 96 but didn't after a lot of racer whining about how tough it was. I preran it in my Toyota and a motorcycle and later did the reverse loop on a Honda Trail 110. Have to admit I did bulldog the 110 down the south summit cause the brakes and small tires didn't work too well on the steep sections. They haven't finished at the convention center in a while either, usually the baseball statium.

surfer jim - 5-12-2008 at 07:29 PM

If my math is correct looks like about 140 truck/buggies entered so far....seems like a low number......:(

Looks like I will be going and helping chase a 7 open.....:tumble:

TMW - 5-13-2008 at 06:59 AM

I think it will be a while before we see 400 entries again. Housing construction is way off and the publicity about the kidnappings and shootings in Baja don't help either. By race day if they can come close to 290-300 I'd say that's good. I think in the early to mid 90s entries were down to low 200s for a while.

tunaeater - 5-15-2008 at 01:20 PM

Thanks David

I will be racing the 305X bike from RM 105-205 and then the 254X bike from RM205-270 and RM405-Finish.

I hope I see you out there. It's been a while since I've seen you and Elizabeth. I think the SF 250 in 2005 down at my dads house maybe was the last time.

The 305x bike wil be using Baja pits so if you are there say Hi.

Paul

Gadget - 5-15-2008 at 02:35 PM

We'll be looking for you at pit 3.

Good skill to you!

Hi Paul,

It would be neat to see you race, for sure!

Elizabeth and I are taking a 4 day beach vacation over Memorial Day, which is the weekend before the Baja 500. Because of that, I kinda doubt that we will come back south 3 days later.

So, we both wish you much success on your rides!

If I am looking at the map correctly you will be riding bike #305X from Nuevo Jcn. to Borrego Wash.... AND bike #254X from Borrego Wash to Valle Trinidad and hopefully remount it for the final run from Ojos Negros to the finish line!!:bounce::bounce::bounce:

Thats it David you got it right on the money.

I got the HOT sections...

Gadget I'll be on the bike at pit#3. What a nice way to introduce ourselves.

Gadget - 5-16-2008 at 08:21 PM

Cool!

Careful down the summit Paul :!::!::!:

I hope I will still be in the pit when you come by. I was out of the pit on rescue and recovery for almost the entire race when we pitted the 1000 in 05' at this location.

Hope you guys all take it a little easier this time till you get past us.

We'll be looking for 305X!

Thanks TW... Really sad Class 3, 8, 9 only have one entry! No money to gain, just in it for fun?

Roberto - 5-19-2008 at 08:58 PM

There's no money to gain in ANY of the classes.

TMW - 5-20-2008 at 07:35 AM

I think class 8 is really sad. Once the premier truck class with Walker Evans, Robby Gordon and Larry Ragland with overall wins. Many great racers did good in that class. I think there would have been many more OA wins if they had started in front of the buggies. The two races that I remember most was RG's OA win in 1989 and Brian Stewart's class win, 1990 maybe, he blew a tranny at Ojos and was down 2-3 hours. I remember Dave Westim (sp) GMC truck broke on the summit. I went past on a bike, I was running way behind thanks to a one eyed co-rider but that's another story. Then later in Matomi wash I passed him again. I think Dave was blowing power steering pumps.

David K - 5-20-2008 at 08:24 AM

Well, when I was more involved... Score had a 50% payback per class for the winners... ie. If 10 racers were in a class and the entry fee was $500 per racer ($5,000) then 50% ($2,500) was paid back to the top 1,2, or 3 finishers (depending on how many were entered).

If a class had too few entries, then classes were combined so there would be some money to pay back.

Most of the winnings came from the manufactorers in the form of contingency awards... ie. If you won using Brand X, then there was an awrd from Brand X... usually $1,000 or more. That's why you see lots of stickers on race cars... to show what products you are using for publicity photos and the money if you do good!

I know things change... just wondering how the payback works when there is only one of a few entries in a class?

Gone are Class 2 (2 seat unlimited), Class 4 (long wheelbase 4WD), Class 6 (Production 2WD water cooled passenger cars).

[Edited on 5-20-2008 by David K]

Gadget - 5-20-2008 at 01:12 PM

Class 8 specs are pretty liberal now. More or less a TT with a pair of frame rails going along for the ride. So a guys asks, "whats the point".

The LM class 8 is just that. See RaceDezert.com and do a search for Mark Newhan to see build up photos.

Mark really pushed the limits as to what would clear tech, but then when he and Paul saw how many entries they had to run through in the open wheel classes they entered it in TT. Pauls illness caused a withdraw for the 1000.

Now that Mark has delivered the prototype assault vehicle to the military, he said the race effort is back on to finish the truck.

Many of us think that SCORE should rearrange the class start positions so that the now allowed high horsepower truck classes don't have to run through so many of the lower horsepower buggies.

Some say the open wheel entries are way faster in the rough and tight stuff, which is granted, but the big hp rigs are much faster on the open parts of the course. And there are a hand full to be passed by 40+, rather than the other way around. I think this would re-energize class 8, protruck, 3 etc.
