Gonzaga Trip

Big Al - 4-20-2004 at 03:54 PM

I am headed to Gonzaga and enchanted Island area Leaving April 30 for a quick 4-day trip. I will have my 15 Klamath in tow. I am headed down through San Felipe and out through Highway 1. Does anyone have any bits of wisdom for the trip related to the drive or the fishing? What kind of fish can i expect at this time of year? I did this trip to the enchanted islands about 10 years ago, but that's a long time ago. Any information would be great, so I can prepare. Give me the coordinates of some fishing spots will make me really happy. Where can we stay in Gonzaga?

Thanks,

Big Al

Big Al,

I am also heading down for a spearfishing trip there from the 24-28th. The tide is dead during that time of the month.

Expect yellow tails and grouper. Also trigger fish and cabrilla are a given to hit. I bring down frozen squid when I go out. 30 lb line minimum.

As far as my spots go...well....I guess....ok here is one, the second island to the south in the chain is called El Muerto (cause it looks like a mummy) hit the northwest point of the island. Also just north of the big island of salvatierra is an inderwater sea mount that actually comes out of the water at low tide. They are both great spots. But thats all yer gonna get outa me...

As far as the other info, Bring an extra spare for your truck and for the trailer. The road from San Felipe to Puertecitos is getting pretty bad as far as potholes. I am heading down tomorrow so I will check it again.

Do yourself a favor and carry some type of flares and VHF if you are going out to the islands. The wind can pick up VERY quickly and you might have your hands full in a 15ft boat. The smallest boat I will take to the islands is a 18ft I/O and that is only in perfect conditions.

Remember there is no coast guard down here and you are your own backup, leave good info on shore with someone where you are going and when you will be back so if something happens they will come and at least look for you.

Have a great time!
