Quinceañera in Asuncion

shari - 5-12-2008 at 01:02 PM

I have been working on the photos I took of our amiga Arizbet at her 15th birthday rites of passage celebration. I prepared a little album to share them with you. It was so beautiful and a great 2 days of partying...not sure how to post the link but I'll try...http://picasaweb.google.com/sharibondy/Arizbet15thBirthdayParty?authkey=4QC91GvccrA

Nice album you put together, enjoyed the pix. It is really great to see the new stadium being used for so many different activities.

What's up with the Tequilla? They drink at 15?

The whole town is invited to these events and each table has a food platter, a commemorative piece to take home and a bottle of tequila and a big bottle of soda...there is also free beer at the bar...so things get pretty lively...they usually last until 3-4 in the morning and sometimes till dawn. This rites of passage celebration is like a coming of age party...where it is the first time the young woman is allowed to wear makeup...dance with boys...and have a drink...the toast to the maiden...so it's a pretty exciting time for the girls and is nearly every girls dream to have one.

But nowadays there are new options to the quinceañera...girls often can choose to go on a trip or get a car instead of spending the parent's years worth of wages on a one night blowout. FAmilies save and plan for years for these celebrations...it is the highlight of a girls life. Weddings aren't common here..only wealthy families have big ones so a girls 15 birthday is her big night. It looks just like a wedding but without a groom....just an escort...bridesmaids, church service and reception. I like the 3 elements...religious ceremony....huge party with everyone in town there...and the family luncheon...hangover curing the next day to wind things down. They are so much fun to attend and I highly recommend going to as many as you can....gringos are always welcome and the locals enjoy watching how clumsy they are on the dancefloor trying to cumbia!

this was my favorite couple...it won't be long until we are attending her 15th party and I bet her date will be this little fella.

Whoa! Free beer???? Wait, on second though that's where I went wrong at the booksigning.
But it looks like a beautiful event. Very charming.

Diane,

I was watching the old musical 'King and I' just the other day and thought this song was appropriate, especially given the nature of Spanish culture.

A girl must be like a blossom
With honey for just one man.
A man must be like honey bee
And gather all he can.
To fly from blossom to blossom
A honey bee must be free,
But blossom must not ever fly
From bee to bee to bee

What do you think? ;D

Boy, are you in trouble now. Sure hope they don't sing that song at the quinceaneras. :P
