Armed robbers ran out of gas!!

I guess these two were newbies at armed robbery. A couple days ago these 2 tweekers found their way to Asuncion...in the afternoon, they held up a store here...video rental, pharmacy, jewellery etc...at gunpoint. In our village, any car from "the outside" is noted upon entering the village so the cops knew what getaway truck to look for. They soon found the old beater, paint scraped off, pick up stuck in the sand and out of gas on the road out of here....guess they didn't realize how far it was....jeje...so they got caught, the goods were returned...a happy ending...BUT, now there is a huge cafuffle where the ejido members want to do a protest to stop the highway from being finished thinking that crime will increase if the road gets paved. So that should make lots of you Nomads happy...but gee, the crappy road didn't deter these dastardly criminals! It did make for an exciting Saturday for sure...

I would hate to see more crime find this little oasis for any reason.

Have they been taken into custody? Going to be charged with armed robbery?? I hope so.

Had a burglary a couple years ago in Abreojos, two young men from La Bocana...In one month, tried, convicted and sent away for two years....don't think they'll be doing any more B&E.......

We still have one of the finest spots in Baja, hope we can keep it that way.

Sometimes there is real justice! Poetic justice in this case!

One of the things I love about Asuncion is the fact that it is a small community of people who know and support each other. You are very fortunate, no, probably wise, to have settled there.

I do not think that paving the road will bring in more crime, if they cant get back to the highway. Now, a pemex station in Abreojos and Asuncion, that would kill the whole coast.

Another stupid robber story: .
About 4 years a guy that had been doing work for a lot of us and was well thought of went on a drunk for a few days with a couple other guys. They went from house to house drinking, eating and sleeping. Also they were loading up a car they were going to take. After three days or so they took the car and headed out on the old dirt road. They must have pretty drunk because a couple who were exploring found the car with a few flat tires abandoned. They recognized the car and the police came out to investigate. While they were there a truck came screaming around the corner and drove into a ditch when he saw the police. While the police were trying to help push the truck out of the ditch the couple were trying to tell them that the guy in the truck was the thief. About the same time another truck came around the corner and stopped. It was our local mechanic who was chasing the guy in the 1st truck who had stolen it too..... Dummy in jail and all item back in there proper places. I was told he got 23 years and didn't turn his partners in crime in. I know he did spend or is spending time but 23 years? Maybe someone else from Pt. Chivato could embellish this story?

They called in the Policia Ministerial from Vizcanio which is what a friend told us they always do in a case like this. So, I am quite sure they will be charged.

We were also told that for years some at the coops and ejido members fought against having the road paved, but doubt the paving will stop now---one never knows.

On the other hand, parts of the newly paved road that were never repaired after the big storm are really falling apart more and more, so maybe the new paved road won't last long.

Ya, George, tis a beautiful part of Baja.

Oh, our friend told us that this has happend before, VERY rarely, and if any small items are stolen by locals, they just round up the usual suspects.

Hope the town stays small enough that any and all visitors are recognized.

Shari,bad roads never stop Nomads from going to places we love. For example , Gonzaga-Puertecitos road,Guadalupe canyon,ect,ect.

Too old and gimped up to run for anything! Besides, what I said is what someone running for DA would say. Having said that, if there were a town I would run for President of the Chamber of Commerce, Asuncion would indeed be the place.

Love this story. Would that all the crimes reported on this site were solved so easily.

I have lived in Baja for going on 8 years now, and in no other part of life here have I found a bigger disconnect (from a "prior culture" point of view) than in crime and punishment.

Mexicans appear to be far more forgiving of criminal or merely anti-social behaviour than their American/Canadian counterparts. Just this weekend, a truck arrrived from the local ejido looking for a stolen cellphone that they heard had been sold to the son of one of our ranch workers - they retrieved the phone and forgave the thief (who accompanied them) - and all was well.

A thief in El Centenario was caught three times, and finally sent to jail. He was out in two days because he was from the mainland, and had no family to feed him in the La Paz jail.

Forgiveness is great - and is built into the Mexican penal system, I am told. You get 15 years for carrying illegal weapons, but only 6 for murder (although I have seen worse "miscarriages" in the U.S. and Canada).

Does the gentler approach work? I am sure it did, in a gentler and more distant time - whether in these harsh days of drug violence and kidnappings it still does, is an open question.

I too love the word cafuffle but never had to spell it before...hope it gets by the spelling cops...Rob brings up a very interesting point about the time one gets for different crimes...murder here is a forgiveable crime as often it is a crime of passion or venganza...vengence? could happen to anybody in a moment of lost reason...or someone pushed to the edge...or in self defense sort of....my other favorite crime in Asuncion was when a tweeker stole a gringo´s XXL leather jacket (the vicitm was an out of the country friend of tweeker type)...anyway, the ratero tried to sell it to the police chief very cheap as he was the only guy in town who was big enough to wear it!!!! he got caught but I don´t think he was punished as he wasn´t ¨right in the head¨....seriously though, luckily in our village there is very little crime and usually easily solved and goods recovered...thank goodness...I love how local deal with light fingers...they set traps...like sugar in gasoline for those who help themselves to your gas!!!!!jejeje

If you Nomads think the road to Asuncion is soft & rough, try going past the turn-off and head to Bahia Tortuga. The best part of the drive is the last ten or so miles are paved. Plus there are about 6 dump trucks dumping base on the road six days a week.
For a town of about 2000 people, there sure seems to be a lot of attention devoted to it. They put in a 24" water main from Vizcaino complete with a huge pumping plant.
Perhaps this could be the next fishing mecca for Gringos. I know that the bay is a resting point for American sail boats headed to Cabo, and once a year the town hosts a yellow tail tournament.

It is the road that we were told where the armed robbers got stuck in the sand. We go out in that area quite a bit---glad we were not there that day as we always stop and we probably would have pulled them out.
