Those of you who remember the great burgers Mary used to grill at El Mezquite on Madero between Ocampo y Bravo will be interested to know that the
restaurant is reopened with new ownership and is called Captain Tony's Taqueria.
Had dinner there the other night with my S.O. She ordered the Tacos Arabes and raved about it. The dish is more like a tostada than a taco though,
as it is grilled arracheras beef served on a flat piece of pita bread with melted cheese, onions and mushrooms, as I recall. Along with a cup of
complementary beans it was a meal in itself.
I ordered the gringas, thinking that with the beans it'd be about all I could handle. But what came off the grill was the usual mixture of beef,
cheese and onions between two small flour tortillas. Cut up in four pieces it would've made a tasty appetizer dish to pass around.
The other downer was getting charged 15 pesos each for two small cups of warm horchata. That and the skimpy "salsa bar" left me feeling like the
place has potential but there's a lot of room for improvement.
Physically, the place has been expanded on the back side and is vastly improved from what it used to be. The same grill is busy again and hamburgers
are back on the menu. Tony opens at 7 and stays open till 1 in the morning. That, too, is an improvement over Mary's operation -- she often didn't
get things up and running until 8 o'clock or so, too late for gringos and geezers like us to eat dinner.
We'll definitely return to sample the menu as the Captain has a new and very interesting take on the whole taco thing. Rancho Viejo is still number
one but Captain Tony's is promising and deserves a chance.
