MEXICO CITY, Jan 15, 2003 (El Economista/Corporate Mexico by Internet Securities, Inc. via COMTEX) -- The most expensive city in Mexico in 2002 was La Paz, Baja California Sur, with inflation of 9.82%, almost double the national inflation rate.Information from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) showed that among the 46 towns and cities on which inflation data is collected twice a month, Mexico City was among the 15 which had the highest increases in inflation at 5.12%, despite the fact that this was below the national average. Those cities coming closest to Banxico's 2002 inflation goal of 4.5% included Mexicali, Guadalajara, Huatabampo, Campeche and Ciudad Acu?a. The lowest inflation was seen in Tapachula, Chiapas, with prices rises of just 2.62%.Banxico officials said that inflation had a different impact on each sector of the population and in each city, depending on levels of spending and items consumed. The section of the public suffering the highest inflation was that receiving salaries equal to or more than six minimum salaries (US$24.78 per day). This group was followed by those earning between 3 and 5 minimum salaries (US$12.39 to US$20.65 per day).

Boy is that not news...

La Paz has always been incredibly expensive by comparison to the mainland, but obviously Los Cabos isn't included in their statistical analysis, as it dwarfs La Paz for inflation. I can't think of any place in Mexico that I've found to be more expensive. But, by and large, everyone who lives in BCS realizes that the privilege is worth every penny. - Stephanie
