safer in Ensenada?

Chamaco - 5-27-2008 at 07:49 PM

Hello All,

You guys think Ensenada is a lil safer then TJ and Rosarito quite possibly because of the armed forces here?

MexicoTed - 5-27-2008 at 07:52 PM

There are plenty of armed forces in Tijuana. I just think it's the nature of the beast. TJ is the capital and at the border. This is wear the drug cartel is so it's naturally going to have more conflict of forces.

I have yet to hear of any kidnappings in Ensenada in my four years, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened

Do you live in Ensenada?

bajaguy - 5-27-2008 at 08:00 PM

I feel perfectly safe when we are in Ensenada, however, I also practice personal security precautions just as I do in Reno.

Chamaco - 5-27-2008 at 08:01 PM

Indeed

Chamaco - 5-27-2008 at 08:06 PM

Who were they kidnapping and what part of the municipal?

I think he was just trying to say the capital is Mexicali. Probably a good thing. Tijuana is already a beehive of activity.

Do some research.

This may help you to keep up with current events unless, of course, you have access to the Mexican news.

That was in the center of town. Probably nothing more than local copycat vandalism or a love spat. What serious motive could it have? Had it been an expert placement, it would have exploded, seriously.

I subscribe to Google News 'Tijuana', and according to news sources, there are approx. 45 kidnapping gangs in the Tijuana to Ensenada corridor.

We live just south of Ensenada, do all of our shopping and business in Ensenada -- we don't feel threatened or worried in any way. No more than in any place in the US. Lock your car doors, don't leave your purse in your shopping cart while you go off to look at somethng that catches your eye...it's a great place and we LOVE it!

MexicoTed - 5-29-2008 at 01:02 AM

Sorry ElFaro, I meant it was the Baja's financial "capital". Good catch though!

Capt. George - 5-29-2008 at 09:49 AM

Bruce, these days we gotta be careful "wherever" we are...

Basically you just gotta be street smart.

Blend in the best you can.
Dress accordingly
Don't flaunt
Be vigilant

If you can't do that, don't go to Baja...or anywhere else (in or out of the US) for that matter.

In my travels to Central and South America, I have seen people flaunt themselves, talk on their cell phones, and dress as flamboyently as they could afford. I also try to dress in my normal/typical clothing, but when I would tell people that I am an American, and they told me this was, "Impossible" because I spoke Spanish, and "American's don't speak 2nd languages."

They probably don't understand that many Americans speak second and even third languages .... I know for me that as a young person, German, French and Latin were very important languages to learn if you were involved in science, medicine or politics.
Today there is probably more of an emphasis on Spanish.
