Questions for Pilots

AcuDoc - 6-2-2008 at 05:50 PM

I have a friend leaving here, Sun Valley, headed for Loreto. He is planning on landing in Nogales to fill up etc. I suggested going to Guaymas to do the same.

Which would be easier? How far is is from Nogales to Loreto? How about Nogales to Guaymas? Guaymas to Loreto?

What are fuel costs for fuel?

What about insurance? Can you get it from Vagabundos etc.

Thanks in advance

depends - what is he flying?
nogales to guaymas is about 90 minutes. nogales to loreto is about 2:30
loreto to guaymas is about 40-45 min. hour tops.
it all depends, how fast is he?
avgas is just under $4 to $5 a gal depending on a whole bunch of fee variables charged at the diff airports - some are privatized and some are govt run.

insurance he has to have in hand before he lands. i do not know if vags has those surplus lines but i doubt it - they cater to ground pounders and RVs right?.
its a big deal - he needs to join BBP now and get it all done correctly. if he lands in mexico and any part of his paperwork is wrong or incomplete he will be grounded right there till he fixes it. and pay thru the nose to get it all done , plus it will be slow.
if he's a newbie he can call me and i'll coach him thru. once he gets into flying baja he'll not drive.

minimize the landings for fuel, you'll save on fees. just figure where you want to go and fly there with an hours reserve. i go Non Stop phx to loreto all the time, it is about 3.5 hours - easy ride man.

I suggest you U2U capt. Mike. he keeps all that info in his hip pocket, and will fly down there on a moment's notice as long as it involves fish!

beer, wine, music, food, tequila, girlz, bars, restaurants, water, sand, flying, smoking, sitting, sleeping, snoring, diving, sailing..........all of it!!

I'd like to make a suggestion. Your planned route of flight takes you over water for about 140 miles between Guaymas and Loreto. Out of gliding distance of land. I don't know what your friend is flying, but if you want to be safer, going in through Mexicali and down along the east coast of Baja only adds 60 miles to the total great circle route from Hailey...about 1/2-hour more flying time.

An added advantage is that route takes you right over Las Vegas, in case you want to stop and have a little fun. When I was flying down to Baja I used to use Lewis and Lewis for insurance. I still use them for my Mexican Auto Insurance.

Here's a link to them:

Sounds like he has a twin. He could make Loreto with only one stop from Hailey...if he has a potty on board.
