Outdoor Wood Burning Oven

Roasty - 6-3-2008 at 03:33 PM

Anybody had any luck building a brick or clay outdoor woodburning oven in Baja?
I'm really into building one (36" dia x 24" high ??) the next time I am at our casa and would like to hear about any success/horror stories.
Obvious uses are breads/pizzas etc. but i really like the idea of cooking fresh caught fish etc.
Is Firebrick available in baja, or would adobe clay be the best way?

Cheers,
Roasty !

I recall in the 70's eating fresh corn tortillas cooked on a metal plate in an oven made of rock and sand! It was run by a family on the beach of Conception Bay...what a wonderful memory.

Check this out. I found a model of what the oven looked like and you can find here some plans for one.

This was a smoker we built with locally available materials, but we could use it for baking too...but to basic a model for the high temps required for a bread oven.

here's a link for an oven I saw in Sunset magazine several years ago. It's still on their website, so it must be pretty popular. Haven't done it myself, but it looks like a good idea that can be modified to accomodate locally available products. If it works, are we invited over for dinner :lol::lol::lol:??????

Thanks everybody for the replies, it looks like the "Sunset" oven is almost "Idiot Proof" so that would probably work for me ! And once I get this thing fired up and producing the mouth watering offerings that I know it can/will do, of course theres an Invite ! Now I have to find me some good adobe soil !
