Ayuda me

tortuga - 6-11-2008 at 01:55 PM

Hi guys,
Here is my question. We want to take car down to our place (to stay there). I was going to drive it down and fly back. But now I am thinking of pulling it down with my p/u. What is Mexico going to say about this if anything at all. When I was thinking of driving it down , I figured no big deal. But if I am towing it is there some rules I need to be aware of.
Thanks in advance , Tortuga

Your Mexican auto insurance must be ammended to include towing otherwise the whole policy is void if you get into an accident.

You must have an FM-3 or better to leave property behind in Mexico... FM-T (tourists) must bring back all their possesions when they leave Mexico... except for their money and anything that was stolen, naturally!:lol::lol:

We leave a car at our house in Mexico and we just bring new registration and place stickers when we come down. We insure on our mexican policy. David is absolutely correct about needing at least an FM-3. If you leave it and someone steals it (hard to believe that could happen) and you report the theft, you will have to pay a fine.

Tortuga, just what kind of help did you have in mind? As you can see by Lera's reply, we are taking you seriously and only wanted to help!

I have towed in Baja... what other special rules do you think there are besided insurance and visa? How about be careful south of San Quintin where the highway shrinks to 19' wide?:?::!:

There are restrictions to towing a car into Mexico. Provisions are made for race cars and, I suppose, toys but, I can't define any of this for you. What I do know is people who have towed or trailered cars through the border for purposes such as mechanical work or paint jobs and have been turned back. I think the towed vehicle has to look like something you're not apt to leave behind.
Best you look into this a bit further.

I see big RVs with their toad (towed get around vehicle) behind them ... how do they deal with this issue ... or is it the towing a car with a car that would attract attention ?

I also believe that by going with someone else and not alone you can demonstrate to Mexican customs at the border that there is a reason to have two cars. Part of the car permit rules language always mentions "per person", not per family, couple or household....

Like I said, I can't tell you. It's probably not a law but, a regulation that only has meaning when It's happening to you. All I know is it requires looking into. There's no book or list that will tell you what will or should happen in that little section of hell so it's best to be prepared as well as possible.
