Bugging Me

lingililingili - 6-13-2008 at 09:00 PM

Anyone know what this bug is? We thought it was hand painted until we found a dead one exactly like it! He or she is beautiful and we are very glad Jeanette did not step on it!

Sharksbaja - 6-13-2008 at 09:06 PM

Yes it's beautiful. Squish it now, hurry before it morphs back into a Chupacabra. Remember it's still Fri the 13th!

DianaT - 6-13-2008 at 09:06 PM

Those are GREAT pictures---that bug does look hand painted.

If I saw a ceramic bug painted like that, I would think it was beautiful, but also not an authentic reproduction.

Hope someone knows what it is---but you sure did a great job with the camera:yes::yes:

Diane

lingililingili - 6-13-2008 at 09:18 PM

Diane: Thanks, now I wish we had kept the dead one!

longlegsinlapaz - 6-13-2008 at 09:18 PM

Dibs on the electric tennis racket at the next gathering....IF I'm invited, and IF you found that in your yard!:o:o It doesn't look dead enough in the belly up pic!

lingililingili - 6-13-2008 at 09:20 PM

Longlegs you are always invited and that be the only bug you can't zap unless, of course, it bites, is poisonous, or is in the c-ckroach family!

Now, now, does that tiny little creature give you the creeps? Take your taser gun.:lol:

Actually, how big is this beautiful creature? Chupacabra keeps flashing in my mind, thanks to Sharks.:lol:

Magnificent photos of a magnificent bug lingililingili!!

longlegsinlapaz - 6-13-2008 at 09:28 PM

Okay, I RECOGNIZE it NOW.....it's a highly poisonous, terribly aggressive biting painted c-ckroach!:bounce::bounce: Trust me!

:lol::lol::lol:

It does so looked painted.

lingililingili

Are you sure you didn't paint it? Those colors are so big!

Diane

lingililingili - 6-13-2008 at 09:40 PM

I assure you I would not handle a live bug! And even if I did like bugs, I cannot paint worth a darn! I just know someone will know exactly what this guy is.

Sharksbaja - 6-13-2008 at 09:45 PM

I was kidding of course. They turn into vampire bats.

Beautiful vampire bats!

At least 2 feet long and 30-40 pounds.

Sorry, the fisherman in me took over. About 1 1/2".

Someday you just may realize how useful c-ckroaches can be. (Always wondered where that term 'roach' came from. Oops, wrong kind of cigarette.)

bigjohn - 6-13-2008 at 10:31 PM

It is a Giant Mesquite Bug.

Here is a link for some others.

That's it. A Giant Mesquite Bug.

Maybe it was 3 feet long and 40-50 lbs after all.

Aventurera - 6-14-2008 at 12:29 AM

Good call, Big John -- you know your bugs! I found a site with more info and pics of them.

http://fireflyforest.net/firefly/2008/03/18/giant-mesquite-b...

lingililingili - 6-14-2008 at 06:31 AM

Thank you Big John and Aventurera: I guess I wasn't finding it because in my mind I kept insisting it was a beetle. When I searched beetles a whole slew of VW's came up! Ha! Thanks again, mystery solved.

ELINVESTIG8R - 6-14-2008 at 06:44 AM

That bug is beautiful. Just be cautious around it because it could be an undercover "Elitist Chump Bug” put out by the “Elitist Holier Than Thou, I Am More Entitled Than You Elitist Chumps" on Baja Nomad. Don't touch it because if it bites you will turn into one of the Elitist Chumps or one of their Sheeple ring kissing follower. Do not be a fence sitter anymore and get over and vote at: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=31848 Show the Elitists Chumps they no longer run the kingdom.

NOTE: Maybe the powers that be will see their way clear and move the poll over here to the Elitist side of the railroad tracks where it will get to see the light of day.

Really cool looking bug lingililingili! Nice shots too - it can be difficult getting good close-ups of bugs... ;D

gringorio: Not so hard when BMG is bugging him with a stick and makes him slow down long enough for a photo shoot!

Yes, the mystery is solved, and I appreciated looking at that site.

But your picture is way better than the pictures on that "professional" site.:yes:

Hope you find some of the other varieties that want their picture taken.

Iflyfish - 6-14-2008 at 08:00 AM

Thanks for bugging us with those great shots! Really cool Looks like a relative of some of the creatures Ken Bondy shares with us! Amazing variety in nature!

What a wonderful compliment putting us up there with Ken Bondy! Thanks everyone, this was fun!

I have found that when taking pictures of bugs if I spray them with half a can of RAID first they tend to slow down and even stop so I can get some good shots and even from different angles. The only problem with this approach is if they have large antennae or feelers. They may droop after the application of the RAID for some reason. If that is the case, a simple application of clear nail polish and then straighten and/or extend them into the position you like.

You can have some fun with this making them look more interesting for your photos. Using this same technique on many bugs you can arrange them into different positions and scenarios like the famous scene of 6 c-ckroaches sitting around a table drinking beer and playing poker.

Use your imagination and be creative. We want to see the photos!

lingililingili - 6-14-2008 at 10:13 AM

BajaGringo: That half can of Raid slows them down because it KILLS THEM.
Sorry, I didn't mean to yell.

I do not want to speak out of turn here, but I think you know that BajaGringo was being the Wiseacre he is known to be and was just kidding with you.

Really???

I was wondering why they became so compliant and allowed me to form them into different poses and positions for my photos. Now I feel really bad. Especially for this one because I think it was probably a very rare species of c-ckroach. I could swear I heard it scream "Nooooooooo...." before I sprayed it with my Extra Strength RAID.

My bad...

lingililingili - 6-14-2008 at 11:11 AM

Of course I know that!

Are you guys messing with me???

It's not nice to take advantage of the mentally challenged....

Eli - 6-14-2008 at 12:13 PM

Wow, Wow, Wow, That is one beautiful bug. The Lacandon Mayans of Chiapas paint their God pots, drums ect the same red, black & white, they are considered good magic.

lingililingili - 6-14-2008 at 12:46 PM

ooh, we like good magic!

Do you think all that good magic would go away if you did spray them with raid???

lingililingili - 6-14-2008 at 01:29 PM

Nah, I don' t think so. It does seem like an awful way to die though. Seems like a swatter or a big sized 13 1/2 foot shoe would be better! BMG is my pest controller and a darn good job he does at it too!

I vote for lethal injection, yes, you should have BMG try that.

Death would be quick, painless, and the bug still intact. Then you could use a little shellac and preserve them as garden art.

jd - Here you go. One slightly used Lethal Injection Syringe that was used on my La Baja Poll. I think it could kill two things before it is disposed of.

Gees, I need to reread what I write---evil and mean, yes I am. :P:lol::P

But please, save the injection for the BUG----:lol::lol:

BMG - 6-14-2008 at 02:49 PM

I don't fool around with any bugs the have the word "GIANT" in their name.

Besides, the dead bugs don't photograph as well. This one apparently died of natural causes.
