San Quintin on August 10th

Heading to Don Eddies in San Quintin with family and friends August 10th - 14th for bodyboarding trip. We will stay at Don Eddies and hit surf spots daily. Any suggestions for hotels and surf spots would be greatly appreciated.

Not much surf nearby, you have to drive north or south to find surf. South would be closer and bring a wetsuit the water is cold around SQ.

Baja Cactus Motel in El Rosario and Punta Baja for surfing...

EL ROSARIO/ PUNTA BAJA SOUTH COAST ROAD

The first section we drove was the well traveled road from El Rosario to Punta Baja (10.5 miles). Here is a road log to Punta Baja:

0.0 Leave Hwy. 1 at the sharp 90° curve in El Rosario and head west for les than 500 feet to a center turn. Turn center and enter the river flood plain then take fork to center following the river course with some (usually safe) water crossings.

1.0 (one mile) from Hwy. 1, you will reach the south bank of the river and enter the town of El Rosario de Abajo. Pass the school, museum, El Rosario's second mission site, some homes, etc.

2.5 (miles from Hwy. 1) a road turns left (south) and heads uphill. This is the route south for the coast beyond Punta Baja. It joins with the route we traveled via Punta Baja in 5.6 miles. We continued straight ahead (west)...

2.9 Turn left (south) for Punta Baja. Ahead is a 4WD road to La Bocana Beach (2.2 miles).

8.7 Road left is to continue south along the coast: GPS is 29°58.39', 115°47.17' (NAD27). We drive straight ahead to Punta Baja first then return to this point.

9.9 Arrive at the fishing village of Punta Baja. A road once went south along the coast from here, but was washed out requiring the detour at Mile 8.7.

10.5 miles from Hwy. 1 the road ends at the lighthouse on Punta Baja.

Cielito Lindo hotel - surf right there, but iffy - sometimes more whitewater than rolling swells. You could head south in early AM, and see what's happening at Playa Tranquillo for surfing.

Jardines hotel and restaurant opened a few months ago. They're down the road from Old Mill, and Don Eddies. Nice rooms less then a year old.

El Socorro to Tranquillo for body surfing is good place to checkout. If your at Don Ediie's/ Old Mill ask Kelly, or one of of his sons to point you to a surf spot, they know where to go. One of them will be around the Old Mill. Oscar, Bird, or Christian....all of them surf. Good Family.

I have a friend who rents a house in El Socorro, nothing fancy, sleeps four $55.00/60. a day, I think. I'm heading down for the fourth of July weekend, if I can get some infor. for you let me know.

Don't forget to get to the shrimp farm...80-90 peso a kilo for the beach barbaque.

Thanks for the feedback. I am not set on Don Eddies, just didn't want to go as far south as I did a couple years ago (Guerro Negro for the whales).

are you talking about Socorrito 8 miles south?
if so i am interested in the rental too.

and added a new restaurant, The food is great. try Cielito Lindo for Cracked crab. Happy Hour 4 to 6 brings out all the locals. Live music weekends. Try and find La Lobera while you are in the area ,it is a crater where the seals have found to hide. great place to explore. Beautiful rocky coast. Just before El Rosario I think it is Km 46 1/2. Everyone here seems to not know or have forgotten about a surf spot in SQ I have been going to since the early 1970's... And it usually breaks on a South swell (late summer)...and that's out at the main point or just inside the main point at SQ !!

To get there you drive through Ceilito Lindo and past Gypsys camp. Continue out to the end of the road where you will see the lighthouse. Just before the lighthouse veer left and drive right out onto the beach and park right next to the fisherman's trucks. From there you can motor, kayak, paddle, kick out to the main point. Usually there is some surf breaking inside the point. BTW...you don't need 4WD to get to the parking area or to drive the road. Also in the afternoon I've bought fish and crabs from the fisherman when they came in.

Kelly takes guys to that spot from his boat, and I think they even use jet skis during the winter when it gets big. Not a surfer, but I've seen guys at that spot.

Mike, the rates at Jardines the last time I was there a few months ago were $35. single, $40 double, $100 suite. A BN posted their stay at Jardines, check the restaurant reviews. I'll try and get a phone # for Jardines....guess their website is not up yet. May want to check Kelly's website, Oscar his son was working there when it opened. I don't know if he's still working there, but I bet they know the room rates or have a number.

I heard La Lobera restaurant is finally open. It on my check to see if it's true list. That dusty ride to get there sucks, but the view when you there makes it worth the dust. The sea urchins on the cliff faces are beautiful....just be careful when checking them out.

Actually a huge sea cave with a sky light! The unmarked good road leaves Hwy. 1 at Km. 47.5
(6 miles north of El Rosario's Pemex station), and goes 3 miles to the parking area next to the rope-fence surrounded 'crater'.
Ignore the private property/ keep out (in Spanish) signs, half way in.

Looking over the 'crater' to the sea entrance.
Day parking is 20 pesos, camping is 70 pesos.
In the distance, a future sea food restaurant with a stunning view.

The coastline here was simply awesome...

typical mexican double speak. or are they just ....? there is a 4"x12" (inch) sign at the highway that says "lobera" or was earlier this week.

We met the owner and he said the signs (in Spanish) are meant to keep out others... not us Baja visitors. We took that to mean to keep out local teenagers or trouble makers and not paying guests...

Capt. Mike, my reply regarding K & M sportfishing was for LVPatton whose name is also Mike. I don't have pics of Fernando's rental house, but I'm heading down 4th of July weekend for a day of fishing and a day to drink a few Pacificos con mis amigos. I will take pics of the rental house then, and post them. I'll be at Cielito Lindo's Friday for a few beers, if your there I'd like to buy you a few.

well ya never know. i am waiting for my buddy to arrive to his home at El Socorrito from Montana. we were there for the 4th 2 years ago.
i won't land at Ceilito lindos anymore but we'll have a rig for ground pounding.

Mike, I left my digital camera in El Socorro. I'll try to get Fernando's son to get the pics sent to me. I may get down there again either the week before, or the week your there.

I left San Francisco bay area 2330 hrs Thursday night 3rd of July, arrive in El Socorro 1330 hrs 4th July. Drank to much beer Friday in San Quintin with local friends, got in 0300 Saturday. I met up with Fernando and a guy from L.A., to fish around El Socorro at 0830....tide to low in the morning to launch any earlier off the beach ($150) split between us two fishermen. The guy was staying at Fernando's rental. We fished the kelp first and worked our way deeper. Calicos, and sandies fishing the kelp a little past Tranquilo, and a 10-12 lbs Ling..fun on 15 lbs test mono. Fished deep for all the rojos, and whitefish we wanted. No YT, no WSB. Went in about 1500hrs. I did hear that Kelly got into the tuna (ablies) Sunday or Monday 20 miles out of the point WFO. I would have like to fish offshore, but can't afford Kelly, unless I have a few guys with.

Barbecue at my place Saturday night with Pops, Fernando, Pancho, Gordo and his family.... more beer. Departed El Socorro 0800 Sunday, and because of the boarder, rest stops, made it back to Vallejo 0230 Monday. Work at 0600....my butt was dragging all day Monday.

Fishbuck you should have been with Friday night, we would have had some fun in San Quintin...a little more tame than Tijuana, but I feel a bit more safer drinking with locals in San Quintin, than TJ.

Yes it will work in Baja if you have Larry Buck's "Baja Expeditioner"
The new release has voice turn by turn in the large towns...most trails are there, but not all. There is a update now so they might be there too.

Ya, that's how I thought it would be.And your right SQ is quit but feels safe.
I read a report about private boaters that were there on the forth. They got some tuna but they worked hard to get it. Wayout in rough water and cold foggy conitions.
