I met a beautful lady from Tijuana on the internet. I managed to make a date with her even though we don't speak each others language.
So she seems very nice and was patient with my attempts at spanish.
Who knows... this could be the taming of the Fishbuck in the making. If she's the right kind I won't put up too much of a fight. ;D

Fishbuck,

I thought you were referring to the longfins only 30 miles south of Pt. Loma.

Good luck with the other adventure south of the border.

Good luck to you - I hope you are at the beginning of a great adventure.

And be prepared - the good natured ribbing from the Nomad gang is nothing compared to the comments you will get from your "friends". Even the SENTRI guys give me a hard time (Visiting your girlfriend? Oh yeah, sure - does your wife know?)

Have fun in any case . . . :bounce:

fishbuck - 6-20-2008 at 03:04 AM

Well, the big event draws near. I feel like a kid getting ready for the prom. But I kinda like that.

So tomorrow is haircut and new shoes day. Haurache's out, topsider/dress shoes in.I think I'm going loafer. No tasles.

So ya, it's a sort of minitrip. I haven't been "in" Tijuana for about 2 years. I've never been to the Sanborns either.

Man cannot live by beer and fishing alone you know! And that goes about 10 times true for a fishbuck!
;D

More to follow...

FishStud,
Notice how the majority of advice you are getting is from married types? Of all people, you should know that catching, landing, releasing, cleaning and long-term "mounting" require completely different skill sets.
Good Luck!

My buddy Chris' wife Miri told me the problem with men in Tijuana is that so many of them tend to lie and cheat, that it becomes pointless to date men within her culture. My fiancee Onelis (in N. Colombia) told me the exact same thing. Her younger sister hopes to meet an American man to start a family because she wants to be treated with respect, and not cheated on, either. Just keep in mind, this is what so many nice Latinas are looking for - there are those who are simply looking, "for a way out", but by and large, it is for a nice man who is honest and sincere.

Fishbuck it will be great, i'll have to find you some valium. Calma te amigo, im sure she is shopping and primping as well.

BTW: If Fer ever did step in the wrong direction.... I wouldnt kill him but maybe I might sew him up in the bed sheets while he slept and then pull out the broom stick and beat the holy tar out of his arse. That way there would be no escape and no left hooks on his part. Then when the pain subsided and he calmed down I MIGHT let him loose.

He is aware of this possability and he has never cheated, stayed out all night or gone out with the boys..... On second thought, could somebody please get this man a life!:?:

fishbuck - 6-22-2008 at 12:21 PM

I'm home!

Wow, what a trip!

I meet the lady pretty much as planned and everything went great.
She is very beautiful and charming. We both had a great time and lots of laughs.

This was really my 1st in depth trip to Tijuana. I must say that TJ is a little dangerous compared to most other places I'v been in baja. One must know what they are doing there and that might not be enough to stay out of trouble there. I did have a few brief problems both with the law and street crime. Nothing serious for me though.

There was one tragic event though. My lady and I went to Playas De Tijuana after a late lunch. The beach there is nice and we sat in the sun and enjoyed the beauty of the late afternoon.
After we went to our vehicles and her Ford Explorer had been brokn into and the igniion busted in an attempt to steal it. They failed but the didi steal her purse with all her cards and csh plus driver's license. She was terribly distraught and crying. I did all I could do which wasn't much but lend a shoulder to cry on. Her car was undrivable so I paid to have it towed to her house and gave her a ride home.
She recovered okay after a while and was very classy and stoic about the whole thing. I'm sure she is working the phone today to try and get things fixed.

Thank you to everyone who took an interest in my little story. It was a fun adventure. There is no better way to learn about a place than through it's people. I feel a little wiser and enriched by the experience.

I'm sure I'll be seeing the lady again in the future. This gives me a really good reason to work on my spanish.;D

Have fun out there everybody!

Tijuana tip #1:

Don't let the street girls (sexy kind) start hugging and kissing you. They are really just distracting you so they can reach in your pocket and get about $40 of your beer money.
It happens quick too.
And you won't know until you order a beer and then can't find any money to pay for it. Embarrassing!

Ken Cooke - 6-22-2008 at 12:34 PM

In my trips to Tijuana, Tecate, etc., I know the cities aren't the outback and vice versa. Stuff gets stolen...fast. Its always good to stay alert. I'm glad to hear that otherwise, your trip went well.

Famous last words:

fulano - 6-22-2008 at 12:46 PM

“It is safe to visit Tijuana,” Ramos said. “The criminals know we are very committed to cleaning up the city.”

Phone rates using http://www.pennytalk.com/?gclid=CKSQ1dDuiJQCFSQdagod8SZAXA are much better than using http://www.skype.com on you PC to call Tijuana.

In roughly 1 year, my Spanish went from "so-so/bad" to "pretty good." I'm sure your lady friend will be happy to help teach you. Also, a Spanish-language grammar book wouldn't hurt, either.

bajamigo - 6-22-2008 at 06:31 PM

Mike, I hope you felt some electricity. Leaving the purse in the car (allegedly) raises some suspicions, but you're the best judge of that. In any case, I sincerely hope you had an enjoyable afternoon. You forgot to mention "next steps."

fishbuck - 6-22-2008 at 07:07 PM

I hadn't thought of that angle. But I'm sure the break in was real. We flagged the cops down and made a report.
I admit that leaving the purse was questionable judgement. But I left all my stuff in my truck parked right by her. Passport, wallet... todos. So I guess I just got lucky.
I had put my club on the wheel and my truck won't start without the "chipped" key. Her truck was just an easier target.
She did ask for the $40 it cost to tow her truck. Her money was in the purse and she lost $250 which was alot to her. So what would you do? I certainly cared much less about that $40 than I did helping her.
But thank you for your paranoid suspicions. It certainly is a possibility.

Fish I am sorry your outing turned into a nightmare. All joking aside I hope things go smoother next time.

Ken Cooke - 6-23-2008 at 12:01 AM

If you're always worried about getting "ripped off" or "jacked", it takes all of the magic away. If it were me, I'd offer to take her to dinner again real soon, and find someone in town who could fix her Explorer. Labor there in town is cheap (to us), but not always prompt.

I agree. Maybe you should ask her how she feels about it before you post anything else. My guess is that her response is not going to be positive.

It's always exciting to begin a new romance and tempting to share your excitement with others, but no woman I know would like to have her name and physical attributes bandied about by strangers on a public board. In any event, it seems quite at odds with building an intimate relationship.

Good points all. I don't think she will ever see this board but that certainly is no reason to be disrespectful to her.
I was glad to share my little adventure but maybe I should back off a little. My little story was really less about her than me and my clumsy attempts to try and cross a cultural barrier. But I guess now it's more about her, about us, so I suppose that kind of thing should be kept private.
I will ask if she minds me posting a photo. They are restuarant photos so about as innocent as it gets.
Thanks again to all who showed interest.
