Many of us live along the beaches of Western Baja at low elevations, waiting breathlessly for a killer tsunami to strike without warning. Our Sentri pass, FM3 or US passport won't protect us. Our double wides will not save us. Health insurance? Get real. What we need is a warning and an escape plan. As my homepage I use:

For escape I have my 16 foot MiroCraft sitting up on blocks, ready to float atop the initial surge, all twenty Honda horses ready to push me and my dogs, and wife, eastward toward David's new taco stand on the top of the bluff. Think this is a joke? So did some of the fine folks of Phuket, Thailand before they were turned into Spam before their first cup of morning java.

It's pretty hard to sail through all that debris as the water surges. No inflatable! It's alittle like the peolpe who say they could take hurricane winds- the wind isn't the problem it's getting hit by the flying debris. I do agree we need a plan. Will a 12' long board work?

A 12' board works as long as it floats. In a pinch you can use a bloated road kill dog, anything filled with air or methane is best. But it is truly advisable to leave the area. I keep my cell phone near me at all times to receive warnings. Here is where you sign up:

As I have said before, a personal flotation device and tight fitting bright orange helmet are good to have on hand so your corpse will be easier to find if you haven't cleared out in time.

Does anyone even know how to swim for their lives down here besides us gringos? I have NEVER seen the lifeguards in Rosarito in the water swimming. Never. I've also never seen them train or do anything else remotely lifeguardish. I have see them giving rides to their surfer friends on the quads, and playing with a jetski.

Lifeguarding in Rosarito means pulling up to the surfline in a salvavidas white truck or ATV and then yelling at the people to get out of the water. Seriously.

A friend of our family (18 years old) drowned in Rosarito last summer. He was swimming in the hot water than comes out at the Rosarito Power plant cooling system... aka the Spa PeMex. They looked around from a jetski for 30 minutes but never went in the water. They said his body would wash back up the next day and there was nothing they can do- and it did.

A lifeguard in the states neither could or would walk away like that- they would search forever until they found the body for the family. Maybe it's like others say- these young men get lifeguard jobs because their family has connections- doesn't matter if they can swim or know CPR even.

The lifeguards don't need to swim. Here, you are presumed dead until you can prove you are alive.

Very strange!! We have had 4 earthquakes here in Elias Calles in the past 4 days. Two in the past 2 hours. Have lived here 12 years, wife has lived here 32 years and these are the first. We are 400 meters from the pacific.
