Restaurant Sales Drop by 50% in Los Cabos

San Jose del Cabo - Restaurant sales have dropped by 50 percent in the last two months, compared to the levels obtained last year, a situation that has led to the closing of four restaurants, acknowledged Ulises Mendez, president of the Los Cabos Restaurant Industry Chamber (Canirac).

He blamed the crisis on several factors: economic troubles, US recession, gas price hikes, airline woes, food price increases and speculation, the start of the hurricane season, but mainly because of the conflict between taxi drivers and tourist shuttle operators.

There was another article the other day in the local Mexican newspapers that Baja Sur is starting to get what they call the "c-ckroach effect". The heat is on the cartels up along the border and some of the gangs are moving down to the southern tip of Baja to escape the pressure.

No idea. I think Senor Mendez might be playing a little politics. A restaurant can't make it after just two months of bad business? Hmmmmm. And the last line is the killer, "but mainly because of the conflict between taxi drivers and tourist shuttle operators." Politics being played big time here!

One reson he didn't mention was the unrealisticly high price for restaurant food in Cabo. Too many greedy businessmen here including taxi union and tourist shuttle operators, IMO.

I have to agree with oxxo that the Cabo area restaurants are very expensive. I recently read a flyer about a new restaurant in downtown Cabo charging $24. USD for a steak and they were touted as a very inexpensive restaurant. Most of us who are long time visitors and property owners know where to get good value for a meal where the locals eat, ie. 2x1 carnitas Wednesdays at El Michoacano in CSL.

Not a hijack - ok maybe it is - but is there a recommendation for a good restaurant with reasonable prices in Todos Santos? I'll be lunching there next month (whoopie - can hardly wait). Maybe fresh fish, quesadilla especial, fish tacos, nice patio?

Without a doubt, that would be El Zaguan. 1/2 block from El Tecolote bookstore downtown. World's best bathroom!!!!!! Excellent food less than $10.
