A long while back a discussion about having a car in Baja and being able to keep current CA registration and not having to smog check it every 2 years
went on.
I have searched the DMV website and can't find the form I saw then to make it exempt.
Any help is very much needed, Thanks.Bob and Susan - 7-1-2008 at 12:09 PM
mexico and nevada are exempt from the form
you need to smog a car left in bajaBajaWarrior - 7-1-2008 at 03:17 PM
They (DMV) told us that a vehicle kept in Mexico had to more than 500 miles south in order to be exempt for smog to keep the registration current.
Our 2 old trucks we leave full time in Baja are now on "green stickers" (off road only license like an ATV or dunebuggy) since we only use them on the
beach or out at the desert.

One year ago, Clairemont office on Derrick Drive in San Diego. It took them a while to look it up, but could not give me any written information of
course.
That is when I took the my Toyota that I have owned since new off the road.
I brought in maps of Baja, and my lease agreement stating that I am a resident, but they said I wasn't far enough south...
Bob ,Same thing for me.

They told me San Q wasn't far enough. I never did get my car registered in Ca. I'm now working on South Dakota. No smog and no insurance. Why don't
you try that for your stuff, no residency requirement either. kbajalou - 7-1-2008 at 05:24 PM
My vehicles are registered in SD, but if a vehicle is already registered in Calif. You can get a private P.O.Box in El Centro or Calexico (Imperial
County), change you address for the vehicle to there and you will not have to have periodic smog checks. But under the newest rules, you still have
to maintain liability insurance. So. Dakota is sooo much easier.Russ - 7-2-2008 at 05:33 AM

Yes, that thread has a lot of answers on how to approach the problem ....
I did the South Dakota regristration just before moving down .... and I just did my first renewal and received my new tags in the mail .... easy
and cheap ... $39.50 to renew on my '90 Bronco, also had to include fifty cents for postage.
