Satellite TV subscribers in Canada will undergo another satellite Smart Card ( Conditional Access Card) swap in Bell ExpresssVu's attempts to thwart Satellite TV signal theft. The transition by Bell to another new encryption system is now in its second stage and requires many ExpressVu subscribers to remove the SmartCard inside their satellite receivers and swap them with a new one.

In the first stage of the new encryption transition, ExpressVu issued new firmware updates through their satellite signal streams to selected satellite receivers. These firmware updates were sent out discreetly at night to said selected receivers without any intervention by the subscriber.

In the second stage of the update process, ExpressVu sent a letter in the mail to affected subscribers which included a new upgraded SmartCard. Swapping the SmartCard on the ExpressVu receiver is a simple process. On most ExpressVu receivers, the SmartCard is located at the front, on the left hand side behind a small plastic panel or door. The card fits into a small slot is hidden by closing the plastic panel door.

The subscriber simply swaps the old card for the new one. Once the new card is in place, customers are required to activate the new card online or via a toll free phone number. Bell says it will then take approximately 15 minutes to 2 hours for programming to return to normal. Failure to activate the new Smartcard in the given time limit may result in loss of programming, or a continual on screen reminder advising them to do so.

You can expect the US Satellite company DishNetwork to follow suit very shortly. Bell ExpressVu and DishNetwork use the same technologies and similar satellites. Bell purchased the technology from Echostar Communications in the US. Echostar is the parent company to Dishnetwork. Although DishNetwork and bell ExpressVu are completely separate companies using separate satellites, they do share common methods and technologies. Smart cards, Satellite receiver boxes, satellite dishes and broadcasting methods are virtually the same.

Since the last encryption scheme update in 2005, ExpressVu and Dish Network have been seriously compromised by satellite piracy using inexpensive Free-to-Air (FTA) receivers to illegally watch ExpressVu and Dish Network programming.

More than 2 million homes in 2007 were pirating Bell ExpressVu and Dish Network Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television signals. The new encryption scheme currently in deployment is an attempt by ExpressVu and Dish Network to shut down the satellite pirates.

Technology at this time cannot detect where you are at...I am sure if you are legal they don't care.

YES! We have many friends and neighbors who were on DISH that in the past 3-4 weeks have all been shut down. Illegal for them to broadcast/air (whatever the correct term is) in Mexico. They are SOL. Even folks with RVs have been shut off.

The is no way for them to detect where the reciever is. if they were shut off it was for other reasons, NOT location

It is indeed location. Word is they are checking everyone with San Ysidro addresses. They are calling people and telling them to get all their receivers hooked up for updates or whatever. Well, when your receivers are in Mexico -- that's tough to do. Some of our friends, innocently as lambs, answered the question of where is the receiver located with the truth, not knowing any better.

The point is they have no way of independently knowing where your receiver is unless you tell them or you connect it to a telephone line that originates in Mexico

If you are paying the 5 dollars a month extra to not have it connected to telco line then they can't make you connect it to a telco line to get an update. Not everyone has a telco line.

My own DISH TV is down because my buddy, based in Yuma, has had all his boxes disabled - turns out they had to be connected by phone line for an "update", failing wuich, they were disabled.

These boxes are all legal and paid for - merely "elsewhere".

A question and a point on your post rob.

1) Is your friend paying the extra $5 per box that is required when you do not have a telco line connected to the box?

2) Any box not located at the primary residence is an illegal box. Your box and all the others shared among "friends" are illegal boxs in the eyes of DN.

There is a difference if you have a RV wavier, but even that is illegal in Baja...but far safer then a street address in Texas or...?

I can say firsthand that having each LEGAL receiver connected to a telephone line, fee or no fee, is NOT a requirement and has not resulted in any missed updates.

I can say first hand that with DN each LEGAL receiver MUST be connected to a telco line or be subjected to a $5 per month additional fee to your bill.

Call them and ask them if you do not believe me.

Fact.

Four Legal receivers in Estados Unidos. Two Legacy and two newer (301 and 508). Only the latter two connected to Telco. There is, of course, a $5.00 monthly fee for each additional receiver, but no addtional fee for not being connected to a Tel Line.

Besides cut the bull about pretending they are in the "estados unitos" from past postings, one on 5/12/2005 we already know your units are in Baja so by that very definition they can't be legal.....ROTFLMAO

Did I ever anywhere comment on if it was right or wrong to have DN in Mexico? Did you ever see me post anything to the effect of claiming that no one has DN in Mexico?

I have DN in Mexico also as do many of my neighbors. Are they legal in Mexico? I'll let you figure that one out.

The telco line truth actually lies somewhere in the middle. I just found out that now, only dual tuner units that are not plugged into a telco line will incur the extra $5. if it's an additional unit to a primary then there is a second $5 tacked on for a total of $10

Although the Bus Boy originally stated FIRMLY the FACT that ALL additional receivers not connected to a Telco line were subject to an added $5.00 per unit fee and criticized as false any other claim, others now KNOW that information was incorrect and, per his revised information, only applies to Dual-Tuner DVRs. Since I don't own one, I wouldn't know.

BTW, ANYBODY who would bet that ANY of my FOUR LEGAL receivers are not HERE in my house in the U.S. would lose that bet. Echostar could audit my equipment five minutes from now and there'd be no problem.

The Bus Boy should stick with commenting on whatever else he MIGHT know.

Nothing to correct.

Nothing in my 2005 statement indicated WHERE any of my equipment was located then or now. The point about signal strength remains since, only last month, I lined up a standard DSS dish for a friend.
