Shut Up Frank's Closing ?

CaboRon - 7-9-2008 at 11:18 AM

It is indeed a sad day in Todos Santos if this story is true...

It is reported that Shut Up Frank's , due to operational problems during Frank's absence, will be closing for the summer and hopefully Frank can work his magek to turn it around .... he is back in town and made the decision after seeing how far it has fallen ...wishing Frank the best of luck.

CaboRon

Wonder where the Frank's crowd will be spending happy hour this summer ???

Sharksbaja - 7-9-2008 at 01:56 PM

Yes, it always helps to have vested interest employees. While the cat's away ........

motoged - 7-9-2008 at 09:06 PM

Shut Up Frank's had some good eats....

oh, yeah....we may have had some cervezas while waiting...

But a few days later, I preferred the pork a bit south of SUF's...

Bajabus - 7-9-2008 at 11:16 PM

OMG where will those perpetual guys hangin on the porch go indeed.

Oh yeah the carnitas place is a must stop and those roasted peppers I can eat a whole plate and they are free......yummmy

accross the street from SUF the breakfast place is pretty good too.

Barajas is the carnitas place, with the best carnitas in fifty miles ...... here is a picture of the maestro Ruben Vincente Higuera possibly the best known person in Todos Santos :wow:

It is always a treat to see a man who loves his work.

We aren't talking about Mexican culture here, we are talking about gringo culture.

Barajas!

Lee - 7-10-2008 at 06:22 AM

What about the chicharones and Rellenos Papas? Oh yeah.

Sunman - 7-10-2008 at 07:53 AM

You and pacificobob need to learn a little more before you start talking about something you may not anything about.
News Flash...Gringos are part of the Mexican culture and it sure as hell does not matter what your opinion is.
The people that meet there each day are a community within a community. A few are there most days (closed now on Sunday) most come once or twice a week. We all meet there to plan home parties, fishing trips and get together for our birthdays...to keep up on the needs of others and rides to Cabo/La Paz. We share a few beers, laugh and tell stories. It may be mismanaged now, but I am sure Frank will make changes...hiring in-laws is never a good ideal.
Sorry you two got left out of the good times:P:P:biggrin:

I've been lurking for awhile and haven't felt the need to post. But this is truely bad news, say it ain't so. I haven't been to Frank's in years, but, was it in the last century, I spent many hours/days there in the afternoon after getting bored waiting for surf at San Pedrito. That's gone, now Frank's, what's left??? Ballena Bob. What's he gonna do?

Is it really closed?

I don't think Frank knows for sure, but it is a source of pride for him...his wife not so much I think. I believe she want to stay in the states more. Without her here the in-laws have control. I am the first to admit I am guessing. Ballena Bob is my next door neighbor and when we last talked he does not know more then I. I understand the place is up for sale and I have heard figures of $100,000 up...again everyone is guessing. There are a couple of people that would be great there (one putting up his own money, until Frank could return) and understand how important clean restrooms are. Maybe there are good things on the horizon:(

I don't particularly like Franks, it is a drain on my budget...I would prefer my pacifico at home, on a bike ride or shore fishing. As a 2 hour meeting place it is fine.

Barajas has tasty shrimp tacos but you gotta get there before 5pm! What is this only until 5 stuff?

I think in the eveing they specialize in Carne Asada ....

I never go there after Ruben is off duty around 4pm ...

For the best Tacos de Pescado and Cameroon go to Taco Georges ....

Al G-

I've been digging Peace and Loaf Bakery (M/W/Sat) and La Esquina Cafe
for the similar purposes you mentioned - Gringo hangout hour / meetups etc..-

All good, different spots, different crews, different styles, its all
about good times with friends, old and new

Vivaloha

CaboRon - 7-12-2008 at 07:39 AM

Vivaloha,

I guess you must be aloha because Peace and Loaf closed up for the summer , although La Esquina is keeping some hours over the "slow" season ....

And Shut Up Franks provides a little bit of home town neighborhood beach/sports bar that is especially important to those of us who are here year round, or who just want a taste of home.

CaboRon

BTW : I think it really sucks that Peace and Loaf abandons us for half the year.

vivaloha - 7-12-2008 at 07:52 AM

CR-

Yep - Peace and Loaf is doing the "winters" thing, right...Yeah, I can see the SUF would
be a taste of home, similar perhaps to "Cheers" bar in that old TV Show...With Peace
and Loaf only operating half the year, it gives folks time to build up an appetite for their
yummy goods...Pelon's tacos at the top of town...best carne asada in TS, would you agree?

CaboRon - 7-12-2008 at 08:16 AM

Haven't tried Pelon's tacos yet ... and am not quite sure where they are ... is the top of town the La Paz direction or is it that group of stands at the end of town going toward Pscadero??

CaboRon

vivaloha - 7-12-2008 at 09:56 AM

Pelon is the owner's name and its the top of town near the municipalidad and the
touristy white shopping building...Top of town, dead center of town, just up from the
hotel California by 1.5 blocks...Don't know the name of the taco stand..IMHO Pelon has the Best Carne
asada tacos in TS...Barajas stuffed potatoes at night...But neither of these locations
would be your "cheers" bar meet up spot whence this thread was started regarding
sadness over SUF's being in close down mode...

You are correct, their tacos are very good...maybe because they never clean their grill, as I have been told. I don't eat there a lot as their dirt parking lot entry is directly beside the tables. Most times a car enters they spin their tires on the up hill ramp and the dirt covers you and your food.:barf:
Edit: so as not to get confused this is the one across the street from CFE

vivaloha - 7-26-2008 at 07:39 PM

Al G-

Yeah, lovely tacos, tortas and all of that...I remembered the name of the place-
Its Chilakos Tacos...
In regards to the "polvo" problem...not a problem - they have a palo d' arco wind
break that keeps the dust out of the grill area...
In regards to the grill not being washed, I cannot comment but I haven't ever
experienced any "issues" with their food and in fact, the carne is fresh, hot and yummy
and the cabbage, cebollas, y tomates son muy frescos tambien...
The young lady who is the main helper is not a member of Pelon's family and she is
wonderfully hard on the outside and difficult to make smile...but then if you chat with
her and get to know her, she lets her guard down a little and may give you a smile
as you pay for your tacos...I have a challenge for you Al G - eat a taco or torta there,
inspect it for dust, drink a yummy orange juice - they sell the fresh stuff - and have a
nice convo with the gal there and see if you can make her smile...if you should take the
chilakos tacos challenge i have set forth, get back to us nomads and let us know about your
experience but be honest cuz i guarantee you won't find dust in your tacos...that said, making
the girl smile is a matter of your own personal charm, wit and ability to placticar en espanol...

good luck
