Where do you eat Menudo in Baja?

I am looking for restaurants or puestos in the towns of Tijuas, Tecate, Rosarito, Mexicali and Ensenada in particular but anywhere is great.

Where can your favorite bowl be had? Do you take yours rojo, blanco or have you seen the elusive amarillo?

Don't know the place in San Vicente, but it is close to the major store in town.the best menudo ever

The Growling Gourmet and I tried the menudo at La Fonda in La Mision and we both agreed on an opinion: "It was like eating used condoms in a spicy tomato broth".

I know that is a very singular and unfair assesment of a revered part of the great and complex pantheon of Mexican cuisine, and, also, reputably a powerful hangover cure, but, in this example, my advice is to avoid the menudo at La Fonda. :fire: :o

All tripe is disgusting, even when doctored up with spices, sauces, soups, etc.

I like it too. But don't get out much and so I tried Juanitas Maundo in the can and after a little doctoring it isn't too bad. The tripe isn't rubbery like most manudo if that's what turns you off on menudo. This canned stuff would be good for a first timer or the squimish.

On Sunday morning at the El Cortez hotel in San Felipe they serve menudo. I've had it a couple of times and so far not bad. I like to top it with chopped onions and if there are corn chips available add a few broken up. I also like the Juanitas in the can with a few additions. My daughter in law from Panama makes it and serves it over rice, outstanding.

There are several places that make menudo blanco in Santa Rosalia but I just can not bring myself to like the blanco nearly as well as the rojo. I have a few Mexican friends who spent a lot of time in California and they make the best I have ever had. The very best comes from the mainland and certain areas of southern Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. If it is done properly, it becomes so rich in flavor that you literally have to slowly savor each spoonful. A little chopped onion, freshly ground oregano, and a limone squeezed in the broth for that perfect balance.

A few years back when the women went on one of their escapades to town the guys would order a big (about 3gallons) pot of menudo from a lady in Palo Verde ,fresh corn totillas and BEER. I'm about the only one here now or I'd order up a batch today.:wow:

We stay at La Fonda about every 6 weeks, and the food really has not been that great. It is average at best, but reasonably well presented.
In out stay last weekend, there were more well-to-do locals eating there than the visiting tourists. Seems like the locals are looking for a more secure place to dine and La Fonda seems to fill the bill for them. The local gendarmes we even eating there. Although the parking lot sorta gives it away with all the SUV's with Mexican plates.
