TJ Mayor caught in double-speak flip-flop

Woooosh - 7-27-2008 at 11:42 AM

From todays Uunion Trib letters to editor...

Tijuana's mayor joins flip-floppers One of the bigger complaints the Israelis had with then-Palestinian Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat was that he would make a statement in English for public consumption by the West and then turn around and make a contradictory statement in Arabic to his own people.

On June 13, Tijuana Mayor Hugo Ramos visited San Diego to drum up visitor traffic for his city, and told the public, "It is safe to visit Tijuana" ("Tijuana's mayor in town for tourism," Our Region, June 14).

On July 14, Ramos gave an interview to El Mexicano, a Baja California newspaper, and said to his Tijuana constituents: "For those of you who moved to the United States due to the lack of security, there is still no date for you to return to Tijuana."

Mea culpa- I should have checked the Union Tribune for accuracy. I though they proofread these...I guess as well as they do in the other sections of the papaer. All I did was cut and paste.

One could argue that it wasn't a flip flop because by far most of the violence in TJ is directed at Mexicans - cartel members, cops, and in the case of kidnappings, rich citizens and foreign businessmen, which is the problem I think he was addressing. A very small percentage is directed at tourists. In fact, the big problems involving tourists haven't occurred in the TJ Centro tourist areas.

One could also argue that baghdad is safe for the same reasons. Neither are.

You could be involved in collateral damage, much to your dismay .

Looks like Mayor Ramos is going to fight back

The article says that TJ Mayor Ramos denounces a smear campaign in the US, against TJ and he says there are US businessmen who do not want to lose customers.

No puedo

I guess he missed the "collateral damage" article. Innocenets getting slaughtered. It doesn't really matter if you're not the intended target if you are dead.

He had it right the first time- "there is still no date for you to return to TJ"

This is a pretty unflattering report concerning the dear mayor of Tijuana. No doubt part of that smear campaign being waged by the US press and anybody else who wont accept inplausible denial as the final word. Things like this make me wonder how severly real news has been stiffled. "No news is good news."
