Baja Cactus Motel....Loreto???

Al G - 7-29-2008 at 05:00 AM

Good Morning from Baja Cactus Motel...need help. Plan on staying the night in Loreto. I did a search, because I remember a Loreto motel thread. Got something on 2 price standard, but no recommendations.
I am Traveling with my 14' tin boat, so need something like Antonio's Baja Cactus Motel in El Rosario. Don't expect to find this good ever again...secure parking, super clean/nice, TV, Wireless in room(if you have good wifi antenne) $35 a night. Does Loreto have a motel near this?

backninedan - 7-29-2008 at 07:10 AM

Try the Iguana Inn or Coco Cabanas.

rhintransit - 7-29-2008 at 07:20 AM

there's nothing like the Baja Cactus...anywhere!

if your boat is car top, not trailered, MiCortezZone has gated parking for a pickup/SUV type vehicle. Cocos Cabanas has dead end alley parking, not suited for a trailer, but car top is probably fine.

the only places in the 35$ price range are the Hotel Salvatierra and Hotel Brenda. the parking lot at the latter might accommodate a trailer, how secure it is, I can't say. rooms are very basic, semi clean, ac minimal.

ncampion - 7-29-2008 at 08:24 AM

Could try Loreto Shores Villas & RV Park. Great for trailer boats, lots of room and secure. The casitas are privately owned so the price may vary, won't find anything in the $35 range however. Try contacting Ismael.

Surely with all of the Nomads who post from Loretto there have got to be some suggestions ....

That is a primary function of this forum .....

He arrives tonight it seems .....

LORETTO let's show your hospitality :saint:

Ron
Actually the problem is that there are not any hotels that meet his specifications.
The only one I know of that would have secure parking for his rig is the Oasis and it is over $100/night.

Good Morning From Motel Malarrimo

Al G - 7-29-2008 at 12:25 PM

I got here at 11:00 AM at Guerrero Negro. Was not about where to stay in Loreto...so decided to do little jumps.
This place is great!!! Everything Baja Cactus has...not as new. Real clean and nice, good secure parking. Free wifi. In the bar only so they think, but my Alfa wifi can get the signal 2 miles away. (line of Site) but in my room I am at 3/4 throttle anyway. Just as a comparison...my internal Intel 3483 wifi has only 2 bars in the bar!!!
I gotta say the Scotch is better in the bar:biggrin:
Enough wifi...can someone tell me more about...Iguana Inn or Coco Cabanas? Parking is more important then price, but I am no different then you. I will pay for what I get.
Baja Judy...thank you... and if push comes to shove, a c-note is not an issue. The issue is mostly the sort of people you find in these places. Not all bad, but a few I could do without. I am a much more modest person. Please give me their name in case...again Thank You.
To one and all this road is hard work...but I am having fun, and that helps a lot. It is very beautiful this time of year...Blooms on cactus (I think) are very big and yellow. Tall...skinny and does not look like cactus and I think I just passed a valley named after them...Mal memory.

bajajudy - 7-29-2008 at 12:47 PM

Al
Oasis is one of the oldest resorts in Loreto. I think that you would feel comfortable there...great bar, great breakfast overlooking the water. I would go somewhere else for dinner but all in all a very nice place.
Head straight for the malecon and take a right. It is at the end of the malecon at the turn around. They give a local discount, I believe.
Buen viaje

backninedan - 7-29-2008 at 03:06 PM

I know that Coco Cabanas has wifi, don't know about Iguana Inn. Both have in room vcrs but no cable.

Both are located two blocks from the malecon. I don't have the prices but I think Iguana is in the $50 range with Coco Cabanas a bit higher.

Phil C - 7-29-2008 at 04:02 PM

Al, If you stay at the Iguana, you could park inside the gate at my house just around the corner. Let me know Phil

Phil, I u2u'ed you, but wanted to thank you publicly. I leave to early(Todos Santos next stop) but that is true Nomad spirit...If I find you the beer is on me...Albert

Paula - 7-29-2008 at 09:56 PM

We'd love to help you out too, Al, but we are on our way to Montana now. I have no better hotel advice, but Julie at Iguana Inn could tell you how to find Loreto Shores, and might call Patty there for you. This could be a good option.

Good luck!

rhintransit - 7-30-2008 at 07:36 AM

you're probably en route and settled on a plan already but another option is to by pass Loreto and stop at Tripui/Puerto Escondido. the hotel there has parking that would be safe. it is new this year and rooms run around 120 I think. the grounds are lovely, there is wifi and a good, if overpriced restaurant. there is also an excellent new restaurant with a lovely view of the port, second deck of the Singlar buildings, Porto Bello. since you are only passing through en route to TS, the convenience and safe parking might well be worth the price.

basically Loreto has some charming places in the 50-70 range, with the amenities you'd like. Coco Cabanas, Iguana Inn, and smaller private places like MiCortezzone. none of those have off street parking for a trailer. there are many other private rentals, which may or may not have parking, but not many will do one night rentals. the two larger hotels with parking are The Oasis and The Desert Inn (old La Pinta/enough of a non-recommendation). both of those are dated and in the 100+ price range. I don't know about The Inn at Loreto Bay, but suspect they could accommodate you at a $$$price.

bajajudy - 7-30-2008 at 05:42 PM

Al
I, for one, am curious where you stayed!!!!!!!!!
Buen viaje

Al G - 7-30-2008 at 09:10 PM

Thank you all...I cannot say enough about the Nomads:cool::cool::cool:
I am at the Oasis and glad I am here...my billfold is still sweating from the work. You are right Judy, I am comfortable,
I am not a wimp...I can take it, but please!!!
$125 one person.
$2 Ice
$2 bottle of water
$5 bottle of beer
$9 glass of scotch
I dared not to have dinner so walked a few blocks to Texas BBQ.
Good service, and a fair rendition of mosquite Brisket...beer, wine and scotch. All in all good...not great, My billfold will remember it forever...:lol::lol: $65 one person.
Loreto...I have seen you , I have done you...we will never cross paths again.
The price to quality SUCKS.
Cross this town off your list if you are retired or got a brain...pure tourist trap. Cabo San Lucas is much better......:P

Ouch, Ouch, Ouch

Try it our our way sometime, not as fancy, but sure not that expensive.

Been there, done that, and completely agree with you. We like to stop in Santa Rosalia nowadays. It's still a Mexican town. Just my opinion, though.

Al
OUCH is right
I never drank at the bar.
Did you ask for a local discount...we only paid $100 for two. We were desperate. I had forgotten to make ressies for the turtle conference and the Oasis was the only show in town.
$65 for dinner is a bit steep. What did you eat...the whole cow?

capn.sharky - 7-31-2008 at 08:15 AM

Off to Cabo because Loreto is to touristy? What a joke---ROTFLMAO. There are plenty of places you could have stayed for a lot less money in Loreto. Motel Brenda is about 25 bucks and is clean and has parking for your boat. Some of the other hotels mentioned were good too. The Oasis is just about the last place I would have recommended. Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. No one even mentioned Gail Rameriz' place. Oh well, to each his own.

vandenberg - 7-31-2008 at 10:39 AM

I remember in the 80's a book/ booklet with the title " How to do Mexico on $ 6.00 a day "
Now if one was to follow the same guidelines that book suggested in todays market we would look at " How to do Mexico on $ 100.00 a day ".
But now, following Al G.'s travails, we would have to up that to around $ 200.00, and that would only hold steady if Mexico doesn't follow the world trend for fuel prices, which is unlikely.
Of course, old Al couldn't have picked worse if he tried in his travels through Loreto.
Lots of places with better food for around $ 6.00 and he also bypassed Loreto's waterfront favorite watering hole Augie's where a beer can be had for a buck and hard drinks are very reasonable also.
But, since the arrival of Loreto Bay, lots has changed here and not for the better. The traffic alone is starting to resemble the mess in Cabo, with, before unheard of, parking problems in all of downtown. No more laid back little fishing village and if all the planned developments around materialize, it will indeed turn into another Cabo. God help us.

And you are basing your opinion of Loreto on one day/night? There are plenty of places to eat and drink that are way way less expensive...

Why would you eat and drink somewhere without knowing the prices? They do have menus.

I know there are some places in Loreto that are expensive, but I seriously take offense at your branding the town a pure tourist trap with that limited experience.

Cypress - 7-31-2008 at 01:20 PM

elizabeth! You're hitting the nail on the head. Loreto is a fine Baja town and well worth visiting. How much does it cost for lodging and food?:?:You can spend as much or as little as you want, it's your choice. The people of Loreto are friendly and curteous, regardless of where you're staying or how much money you're throwing around.

Bringing your own Scotch would be a BIG money saver... it would seem!

capt. mike - 8-1-2008 at 08:12 AM

AL!!! why the ell did you pick the Oasis anyway? of course it is expensive - it is nice and on the frickin water fer criss sakes.

Bob - do i need to come down and hold a Scotch clinic now too??!!:lol:

bajajudy - 8-1-2008 at 09:14 AM

Mike
He wanted secure off street parking for his rig and his tin boat.
Now that I think about it, the El Moro would have worked too....oops

I'm also sorry that you were so thoroughly hosed here in Loreto, but the right advice (some of which was posted here) didn't get to you in time.........

The Oasis is spendy, and not at all where you want to go for just one night in town.

If you do stop in town on your way home, give us a shout and one of your fellow Nomads here can show you why we love this place so much.

PS. The ISSTE market sells that "scotch" for $10 a bottle! :dudette:

Viva Loreto

rhintransit - 8-1-2008 at 10:45 AM

don't shoot the reviewer! Al was just reporting his experience. he was handicapped by needing on short notice both a place to sleep and off street parking for a boat/trailer. in Loreto, not known for affordable places to stay, paying more does not mean getting more. he had been spoiled, as all of us are, by the Baja Cactus and hoped, as we all do, that there was something similar elsewhere.

he also stumbled into one of the most expensive restaurants and bars in town. why he didn't flee when he saw the menu, I don't know, but bar prices are rarely posted. like many locals on a budget, I would never eat where he did. but, I did try a glass of house wine there once when there was a function there I wanted to attend. hey, I'd try one drink to attend the outdoor showing with friends. I, too, was shocked by my bill...80 pesos for the house white wine that was, admittedly better than Padre Kino, but a tad pricey. I can vote with my feet. so can he. but if Al (and others) avoids Loreto entirely he's going to miss some great places and great people. I'd also never have suggested the Oasis, but remember that others here did....

CaboRon - 8-1-2008 at 01:18 PM

I haven't been impressed with Loretto either ....

Last time (last fall) through it looked as if the entire town was torn up streets .....

I did find a cheap Mexican hotel (200 pesos) but it would not have held a boat ...

And I lucked out by stumbling into Augie's for dinner that night, a really nice experience and easy on the pocketbook.

No plans to return to Loretto for anything other than a drive thru ...

Al G. ON the way back North, stop on the malecon at Hotel Quenta San Francsisco. As one mentioned to you, "Gail Wright" is name on the cards.
Phone number 011-52-613-135-1089 (unless changed). Inquire as to whether Gail has access to accomodate your boat trailer needs. she has a large parcel behind the motel with gate entry. Stay safe on your trip, and keep us informed what you find in accomodations & food. Stop at Art & Beer, just north of Todas Santos and report on whether the food is still as good as we found it couple years ago. Don't let the "bearded bear" scare you off. Growl back at him.
