Looks like it was in Los Angeles, first report a 5.8.

Here in Imperial Beach we barely felt it, but knew there was an earthquake because of the lamps swaying.

Rattled us pretty good in Oxnard.

Taco de Baja - 7-29-2008 at 12:00 PM

That was a fun one in Irvine (~15 miles from away) on soft sediment, long and rolling. Nothing fell off shelves but lots of creaking.

A moderate earthquake occurred at 11:42:15 AM (PDT) on Tuesday, July 29, 2008.
The magnitude 5.6 event occurred 3 km (2 miles) SW of Chino Hills, CA.
The hypocentral depth is 12 km ( 8 miles).

Felt it pretty good here in Mission Viejo for about 30 seconds. I was just starting to think that if this thing lasts much longer................................. :o

ELINVESTIG8R - 7-29-2008 at 12:45 PM

I was standing at the urinal doing my business on the fourth floor of the building where I work in Orange County. I managed to ride it out and finish my business. When I went back into the office area all the girls were screaming get out get out. So off I went down the stairs with some hysterical ladies trying to calm them down. That was one of the best ones I have felt in some time.

awfulart - 7-29-2008 at 12:49 PM

Hmm, we are 90 miles South of Chino Hills, if that was the epicenter. Didn't feel a thing but we do live on a mountain with much granite, very solid ground. Hopefully no one incurred much damage. We will have worse, just a matter of when.:o

Bajafun777 - 7-29-2008 at 01:01 PM

From L.A. down to San Diego and even slight feel in El Centro. A quake is a quake is a quake, too many years living through them just do not get exicited about them. Well, if it ever reaches an 8 then I will probably take notice in ways I never imaged. Shake rattle and roll, just got to love California. Later--------------------- bajafun777

SDRonni - 7-29-2008 at 01:26 PM

I didn't feel a thing!

I always find my fear level with earthquakes directly connected to how close the quake is----have suffered more damage from smaller quakes that were closer to where I was living---

Also, even after living with them all of my life, I don't think I will ever get used to them---and when there are lots of aftershocks, that gets to my nerves big time.

Since we are not in Imperial Beach, we barely felt it--so no fear. Also, for some reason, the quakes in Bahia Asuncion don't scare me as much and they are very localized and VERY loud.

Just glad is sounds like no real problems from this one, the news coverage is endless---don't think they will quit until they find something really bad to report.

:lol:SDRonni, that is my line and everybody tells me I must have no feelings but I guess I am always in motion and just don't feel them the same as others. This time I was on my motorcycle coming back from El Centro to Brawley and I did not feel it and my wife and her co-workers do not understand how I didn't, so I guess both of us have no feelings:biggrin:. Were you around for the 1971 San Fernanado earthquake at 6am on February 9th? I was about 60 miles away in south OC and it was pretty frightening...............it lasted about 58 seconds. 6.6. Really violent one.

DanO - 7-29-2008 at 02:17 PM

Good amount of sway on the 7th floor of my building in Century City. Called home to check on the family and the 11-year old said, "that was cool!"

SDRonni - 7-29-2008 at 03:30 PM

Bajafun777: I know what you mean. I've had several friends call and e-mail and they just can't BELIEVE I didn't feel it! DH was upstairs working out in the gym and said he felt a little sway and a bit of a bang. I was outside power-washing the deck. You'd think I'd feel it on a deck! But, no, nada.......

jeans - 7-29-2008 at 03:47 PM

Earthquake? What earthquake?

Nothing shakin' here in the SD Boonies

TBcountry - 7-29-2008 at 03:52 PM

I live in south Ontario, used to be Chino, and fairly close to epicenter, 10 miles or so. One heck of a shaker that seemed to last forever, but all is well. Not even any broken dishes, glasses or anything other then a few boxes fallen over.

PS I own a dairy farm so lots of "cow tipping" going on...LOL

BajaSerg - 7-29-2008 at 04:19 PM

Felt it pretty good here in Highland Park, that’s next to South Pasadena.

Bob H - 7-29-2008 at 06:39 PM

Felt a slight 'rumble' at my house here in North County San Diego, plus some cracking noices up in the rafters for a few seconds, that's about it. My two dogs had a funny look on their faces. Chino is exactly 96 miles due North of our place.

I was living in Alhambra, my room was an underground concrete 1937 basement. That was an unforgettable experience watching the ground move like waves, never forget it.

elgatoloco - 7-29-2008 at 06:46 PM

I was in San Diego and did not feel it. My employees called from Whittier to tell me that my warehouse has a big crack in the back wall. Will check it out later in the week. :O

Waves with a DAMN short interval.............my bed was jumping all over the place.

Skip_Mac - 7-29-2008 at 08:27 PM

Grover... many shock waves are associated with an earthquake 'specially a deep on such as this. The slower "rolling" waves often come after the initial push pull or up down vibrating shocks. Amusingly, some of these slower (more intense) rolling waves do more damage by breaking down brick or block structures... They have many names foe slightly different waves but some of them are called "Love" waves. I suggest you try to enjoy them...but keep an emergency kit in the trunk of the car. Signed...a used geologist...

JaraHurd - 7-29-2008 at 09:02 PM

Pretty good jolt in downtown LA. I have been in way too many quakes. Was in the middle of the Northridge one too. If earthquakes don't bother you you have not lived through too many of them or you don't know much about them. You never know what ur gonna get.....Can't wait to retire and move...

David K - 7-29-2008 at 09:17 PM

Was working outside in east Escondido, not a thing felt on ground level there... However, Baja Angel works on the second floor in San Marcos (5 miles away) and the building really "rolled" that everyone around her felt it.

JaraHurd - 7-29-2008 at 09:32 PM

Time for a Xanax I guess!!

BajaGeoff - 7-30-2008 at 11:33 AM

Our office in downtown San Diego got a pretty good roll from the quake....it was pretty strong.

Cypress - 7-30-2008 at 12:17 PM

It's looking like they're trying to make way too much out of this "minor" quake.:D

We Were in Line at San Ysidro

Gypsy Jan - 7-30-2008 at 01:49 PM

Going north at the time of the quake.

Did not feel it all, unless the bass from the boom truck next to us disguised any shaking.

Just a little extra salsa added to the day, I guess.

My wife and I were sitting at LAX waiting for our plane to Mazatlan, after it rolled for about 15 seconds I said lets go and we moved to a reinforced area, we were the only ones to notice and get moving.
