One week to go and we head south
We'll be stopping at squidco for some gear.
In Canada we don't use X-Raps but we will need to pick
up a few.
Now the question...This is my first ever summer break and I
have no idea what color of X-Rap to get for summertime.
We will be targeting YT
Any suggestions ????

Xrap Mag 30 in Silver Blue Mack, Bunker Silver (with the red gills) and I always keep a Fire Tiger around and maybe a Gold Green Mack.
CD 18 or 22 Mags in Red Head or Silver Mack or the available colors above.
2 years ago the favorite color was Fire Tiger but last year they seems to hit the Red Heads and Bunker Silvers the best.
Also make sure to bring some light and heavy jigs 6x light and 7x heavy in blue/white at least for some yoyo and casting action.
And some heavy leaders for the rocks !
And consider some Gulp Alive Squid if you can't get fresh bait.

Timo1, I use a lot of Rapalas (X-wraps, Shadraps, divers, countdowns, RattlinRaps, etc...in all sizes and colors.) I use them mostly up north, Sask,
Yukon, Alaska..why don't you use them in BC? For the YT, I would recommend some Mirro-Lures also. A couple bright colors, a couple dark. I do well
with the 'tiger' Mirro, too.
Been fishing the Cortez for a little while. A memorable dorado and cabrilla were both taken on Hot Pink. You should be good to go. Good luck.
p.s. If you get into birds/fish like the photo below, it won't make any difference what lure you have ...just pitch it in there and run your drag!

We don't fish for the same fish as the places you mentioned Pompano
so we don't use raps here....mainly flies and flatfish
Any more suggestions ???

I would guess that you are headed either to the Pacific side or to BOLA. The yellowtail further south than that do not show much except for very deep
at this time of the year on the Cortez side. Diver has given great advice in terms of color. I prefer the Yo-Zuri Magnum and Rapala CD-mag to the
X-raps as well as the 111MR Mirrolure which may be the all time favorite lure of Baja.
Actually, I prefer live bait to all of the lure action as it is a lot more fun when they take the bait than it is to be dragging a lure behind the

Timo1...I have used Raps and Mirrolures out of Tofino a few times in the last 12 years or so. But I know what you mean about flies and flatfish.
Barclay Sound, Lund, Frazer River, all on our route.
Stop by Squid Co or Hook, Line, and Sinker at Shelter Island, San Diego and yak for awhile. You will get outfitted in no time. Bait rigs, etc.

And I've been practicing casting my 40 lb rig with a medium or heavy jig.
When fishing structure, Juan like many charters, likes to drift over the area so it's good to be able to cast back over the "good" spots.

Re X Raps........My wife was in Colorado visiting her family a couple years ago. I asked her if she could find some Rapalas for me. She came back with
the first xrap I'd seen........and I wasn't that happy till I started using it. Out caught anything I use off the kayak and my boat friends have
started using them down here too. Blue Sardine or Blue Mackerel in any size will work, but the hooks on the small ones are garbage after three fish.vacaenbaja - 8-3-2008 at 01:55 PM
Have fished asuncion exclusively around late November when the yellows start to get big and before the seas get rough. The 18 and 22 Rap mags work
well , however I have found that the storms in blue mack style work quite well , and also are less$ than Rap.Blue and white Tadys always a good
choice as arethe larger krocks in chrome and blue etc.
In the fall do not mess with the smaller raps with the light wire hooks.
The bigger fish will destroy the lure and straighten out the hooks.
Some people bring small cans of flouresent paint of various colors just in case the fish get picky and like that ONE pink and white rapala that is
catching ALL the fish. Also if you like to fish straight mono and fish 20 to 30Lbs line, do yourself a favor. Bing at least a roll of 40 to 50 lb line
and or a rig that is set up for heavier line. There is a lot of structure in those waters and sometimes your ability to stop and turn around a fish
will be
dictated by being able to put the maximum pressure on the fish without
worries of snaping your line due a heavy drag or slight abrasion. Be prepared to subdue the the very green and un exhausted fish once it is boarded.
