Mexico's Calderon reshuffling top cops in drug war

Mexican President Felipe Calderon is shaking
up the top level of the attorney general's office as he struggles to combat powerful drug gangs that have killed 1,900 people this year, a government official said on Sunday.

One of Mexico's top crime fighters, Deputy Attorney General Jose Luis Santiago Vasconcelos, and five other top security officials are resigning, the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. He declined to say if they were asked to quit.

Santiago Vasconcelos, a veteran police chief who worked at the attorney general's office for 20 years, was a driving force behind the battle against drug cartels. He was in charge of extraditions of drug lords to the United States.

Calderon made drug fighting a cornerstone of his administration as he took office in December 2006, but despite his army-backed crusade against traffickers, the cartels remain strong and violence is on the
rise.

In recent months, police chiefs have been ambushed and killed in brutal attacks while children and families are increasingly becoming victims.

The source said Calderon will appoint the replacements of the six officials in coming days.

Mexico's main drug gangs, the Gulf cartel and a group of traffickers from the western state of Sinaloa, are at war with each other and the security forces. Adding to the mayhem, several factions within drug gangs are also fighting for power. About 1,900 people have been
killed in fighting this year.

A nation-wide purge on the order of ethnic cleansing is in order. An immense, unbiased intelligence network needs to be in place to establish who is whom, perhaps an international consortium which excludes the United States. Our involvement would make it unaccptible.

Following Grover's link, I found this statement about the journalist pictured in his post.

"In 2004, Webb was found dead from two gunshot wounds to the head, which the coroner's office judged a suicide."

And folks said what, oh OK, suicide huh? Poor guy must have been really depressed to shoot himself in the head and then do it again. :?:

I just can't see the next logical move for Calderon.

1. He correctly identifies Narcos as the problem last year (fails to identify failure of the judges to prosecute once perps caught as a problem)
2. He brings in the Army- who became the next big problem (torture videos)
3. The Federalis also become victims of the narcos- but not innocent victims as the recent Mexicali AFI agent murders show ( two federalis murdered in their bosses SUV at a chinese buffet, the boss and his wife were caught with $500K in cash in LA the next day)
4. The economy is in the toilet here too- putting more financial pressure on people to accept narco drug money.

If you start with the wrong premise you will always reach the wrong conclusion. Legislating morality is useless though highly profitable for those engaged in it. Stomping out evil is easy to promote i.e. Wars on various things, but hard to execute with any success and requires escalating resources, pain and suffering.

Social stigma, education, medical treatment, good public policy i.e. taxation, and regulation have all helped decrease the use of the drug tobacco in the USofA. These are not as glamorous as a "War" but undeniably more effective.

They'll take our money and our equipment and maybe our advice but, not our personel. If you think our level of cooperation has improved to the point that the number one traditional enemy of the country would be allowed to place tactical operatives on her soil, you're deluding yourself and any president of Mexico that would allow such an occurance would be strung up in the palace crapper. Nothing of this scale could be kept secret. The mere rumor of it would overboil the pot.

It must be in the toilet- becuase the ugly is coming out of people I used to be treated fairly by. I usually have a Mexican relative with me- when I go out on my own I get ripped off.

Just Friday- the TJ gas supply company tried to charge me 650 pesos to fill a CO2 tank they filled for 200 pesos a few months back. They said the dollar wasn't as strong- to which I replied you are charging me in pesos, not dollars! I laughed, called them the bandidtos (that they were that day) and had them empty the tanks. I can get it filled in the USA for $15 dollars. One employee apologized for the fleecing and told me he had left some gas in the tank for me.

So then I get home and the plumber comes by to repair one of my two hot water heaters. He charge 200 pesos last time to brush the carbon off and clean the burner. This time he wanted 560 pesos. I told him to take a hike. My nephew and I did it ourselves in ten minutes for no pesos. I tried to give this formerly honest plumber a little work (I knew I could fix it myself) and he took it upon himslef to be a bandit too when no mexican family was around.

The peso is strong- which means people wiring money back to Mexico aren't wiring as much. They also aren't wiring as much becasue it costs more to live in the USA now.

Mexico counts these remittances as national income.

Please, oh enlightened one, tell me five good things happening with the Mexican economy. Nope, not real estate, tourism or jalapenos.

I have found that the "Google" search and the "You Tube" search to be two of the most powerful research tools available to me ....

They are sure a hell of a lot better than the 3x5 card files of my college days. :lol:
