ex US military vehicles in baja

i've been looking at a lot of surplus military vehicles ALL painted in the finest US camoflage (sp?) to use as my walk-away-if-it-breaks baja outback rig. for $50 i can get a mid 80's blazer/3-4 ton diesel in various states of disrepair, all with under 40k miles on them.

what would be the response of the military when encountered "out there" or at the check points or to the itchy palmed city cop. i know a $300 "earl shieb" would fix the matter, but thought i'd ask.

several people in the San Felipe area have Penzgauers, Swiss army vehicles. The army complained about some of them but they are still here running around on a regular basis.

across the nation there are dozens, if not more at any one time. opening bid is $50.

have looked hard while at the marine corp base in barstow but it seems they are the "leftovers". nothing to get excited about for my $50, but there are many others in other states. these are not shot up training targets, but have been used to train our boys before they go over seas.

granted, these are not shiny, new vehicles but for the diligent, a great deal......

I think it would be wise to repaint it at least some. I've often read, heard, and been told that gringos wearing camo, etc.. in remote areas of Latin America can/have been confused as DEA, CIA agents, etc...More so in Central and South America... but, I'd rather not try to guess the about the logic a drug crazed narco might be using. The DEA has operated in the northern mainland around copper canyon in years past.. so Baja would not be a stretch.

For a walk away.. paint the hood flat black to reduce glare from the sun.. and then paint the rest some other non-camo color that suits your fancy. (something low key but also does not look like it's military would be good.. primer gray? :lol: )

Great idea,ya I think I would change the color to something,primer would be nice:lol: find one of those old Dodge military power wagons with a flat-head six,might out live you.
