Mexican soldiers repel attack and capture gunman
Mexico, Aug 5 (EFE) .- Mexican army soldiers repelled today in the state of Michoacan, in the west of the country, an assault by a group of heavily armed hired assassins, action in which four attackers were arrested, two of whom were wounded, An official source said today.
The hired assassins opened fire on the soldiers who made them halt for a routine inspection along a rural route that connects the rural populations "El Falsete" with "El Venado," in the municipality of Tumbiscatío, the Attorney General said.
During the attack, the military, in addition to the capture of four assailants, seized three AK-47 rifles and two AR-15, two shotguns and two pistols.

They have no choice but to combat the cartels.

This is an example of how fragile the Mexican government is. They have to engage in a open shooting campaign against criminal organizations; it is called war. It also demonstrates the damage the drug and smuggling trade has created in Mexico.

If they don't do this, Mexico will fall into complete chaos, and Mexican society will implode.
It should be noted the Federal operations against the cartels have been largely successful in Baja California. Michoacán, as you can see from the article, is a different situation. It is where much of the drugs are grown and processed that originate in Mexico.

FYI - Michoacan has had drug runners, militant rebels, bandits, etc.. etc.. for decades if not centuries. This is nothing new.

It also happens to be one of the most beautiful states in all of Mexico. I highly recommend going there.. just don't camp - instead stay in a hotel and leave your fancy car at home - take the bus.

My wife has a soft spot in her heart for Michoacan. She got run over by a taxi in Uruapan. I guess I shouldn't have pushed her, but she was young and drunk so it didn't hurt much.

Young and drunk is a virtue. I hope she never changes.
