Where to place my home

dianaji - 8-16-2008 at 12:51 PM

My mobile home (double wide) will be delivered this coming week. i
would like to have it placed where it would get the best exposure for
solar/sun/breeze, etc. Anyone have some knowledge in this area?

thanks, diana

rpleger - 8-16-2008 at 01:02 PM

Where are you?

comitan - 8-16-2008 at 01:06 PM

900 miles south of where you think you want it.

dianaji - 8-16-2008 at 01:21 PM

la mision, high on a hill, but cannot see the ocean, unless i have a deck built on stilts.

Diver - 8-16-2008 at 01:46 PM

You sure seem to have a lot of questions for being about to move to Baja.
Have you ever thought that maybe your cart is way in front of your horse ??

oldlady - 8-16-2008 at 03:45 PM

Be that as it may, diver, her cart is on it's way. Any help some of you guys who know an awful lot about this kind of thing could give a damsel in distress would probably be greatly appreciated.

Diana, You can adjust your solar array to work. Think what you'll be looking at once it's set up. The view, even if it's not water front is really all important and then think where the winter and summer winds come from. I've tried to set my place up so that the winter cold wind is blocked and you can still enjoy being outside. Even if it's a back patio you'll want to BBQ or suck up some sun without the cold wind. Also consider what you might like as far as landscaping. Maybe post some pictures of your lot and different views you could take advantage of. You really need more time to think this through. Camp out a couple of days on the lot and get a feel for what is important to you. Listen to advise but don't let it confuse what your heart tells you. Think back to when you first bought the lot and what were the most notable memories and got from there. First impressions are really important. Good luck!

bajagrouper - 8-16-2008 at 06:30 PM

I would make sure that the roof of my dwelling faced South so if I wanted to install solar panels they would be facing the correct direction for best results...just curious, why La Mission????

Lorin - 8-16-2008 at 07:37 PM

Just curious, where is la mision??

about midway between rosarito and ensenada. if you look closely whilst traveling at light speed on the toll road you will see the water tower on the hill off to the right, or left. way back when, i ditched point loma high school and took my honey down for the day and we climbed up that old tower. spent most of the day up there in the clouds....yesca, mostly. but we had a great time. jackie m. might tell it differently, but i doubt it! :P

dianaji - 8-16-2008 at 11:25 PM

why la mision? because that is where i found a great lot at a great price! i knew of no other... i was led there and i followed.

And the carts not full either.

Dianaji, congratulations. I've only dreamed of owning property in Baja....shall one day.
Solar - there are many variables to look at: Wattage needed, tied into the grid or not, inverter sizes, and "how much money you expect to put into this". Solar can be expensive.
1- Solar array needs to be facing south
2- array size depends on what you plan on running or is it just used to reduce your electrical bill
Once you've decided grid tie in or not then you'll have a better idea as to what you'll need. To start with take a look at this web site and go from there.

www.thesunworks.com/id6.htm

Since you're on a hill "where it's windy", you might like to look at a small wind generator as another option. They run anywhere from us900 to 2700. For 2700 you can get a vertical soundless generator that pumps out 1.5kw. Take a look at

http://www.pacwind.net/#sea

This site is good info.

Well this is enough to get the gray matter churning and once you've got more direction on what you'd like to do, I'm certain there's plenty of nomads who would help design a system and help install it. Shall be watching out for you ideas and thoughts.
Good luck-Rudi

dianaji - 8-17-2008 at 08:35 AM

Thank u so much for that info, rudy!

i will keep your post in my "coming to mexico" file.

if u are looking for a good lot for a great price, let me know and i can perhaps help u out. i believe in "paying it forward."

i have been dreaming of owning property for mannnny years also...it's wonderful having dreams come true.

Do you already have your FM-3 visa or are you a Mexican citizen? You are a brave lady to just pick a place in another country without spending any time there in advance to see how things work.

Thank you for sharing your new 'adventure' here on Nomad! There are many who would like to be as brave as you and will benefit from your shared experinces.

Keri (here on Nomad) runs the Pyramid Resort, there in La Mision. Every year (usually May) she has a big event for all us Nomads and other Baja lovers to meet authors of Baja books... I have been at every one of them... Photos in my web site.

You may be able to write a book about moving to Baja, after you are settled in and it all works for you!

Thanks again... and keep us posted on every detail!!

no, i do not have any of that. i am an american and have been a city girl all of my life and for the past 4 years wanted to live a quiet, simpler life.

yes, i have been told that i am the bravest person ever. i had to learn that since birth...so, it's a gift and has taught me resourcefulness. without taking risks, one could stay stuck in life and I DO NOT! i was planning to move to costa rica and it became so impossible. i have been to rosarito beach many times when i was in business on buying trips, and for many years wanted to 'come on down.' also, to add to this, after raising a family in miami, 25 years later, i got on a plane with 7 suitcases, not knowing a soul and moved to san francisco, then 3 years later to san diego. this is part of the story of my life.

i am extremely adventurous and love newness. since i love to share...my middle name... one day i do, in fact, want to write a book and this will be an exciting chapter. so, here is a part of the book...

lori has been very supportive in this group and i cannot wait to meet her and want to come to her next event, and perhaps i will meet u. i hate that i have to wait until may!

thank u for caring and for your interest.

De nada...

For your own security, please get an FM-3, ASAP... because you are illegal without it. Your property is also not legal to leave in Mexico if you only have the FM-T tourist card/ visa... Tourist only visit Mexico on a vacation... You are going to be a resident and will need to have the correct visa.

Best of luck! Keep posting!!

OK, next question...yeah, i'm sure keeping u'all busy, huh?

where do i get an FM3? what does it entail/cost, etc.?

i feel like i'm in a fish bowl and everyone can see how green i am and how little i know.

my mobile home is going to be arriving perhaps on wednesday*sigh*

thanks, diana

gnukid - 8-17-2008 at 11:00 AM

Diana

On Baja Nomad go the upper corner of the screen and click Search, a window will open and there type in the word FM3 in the search keyword box.

You will find lots of wonderful info.

You can also go to a site like yahoo.com and google.com and type in mexico fm3 and look for government related sites with info.

Then if you have a specific problem or question someone can help.

The same advice goes as always, yes you should get a FM3 but it is totally reasonable that it might take a while and as long as you are in process and have a legal FM-T visa (180 days) prior to your application while in Mexico it can take as long as it takes. No worries. Just get the form to begin and use that as a starting position. Legally it serves as your proof you are in process of doing it. In Mexico they say, first you have to pretend to do something, then with permission you can do it. Pretend has a different meaning though it means getting started.

Have you checked with ADUANA to find out what what the importation fee is going to be on a double wide mobile home? You may feel like you're buying it a second time!:(

You can obtain all the forms and information you need from the Mexican Consulate office in San Diego, or I can highly recommend a person in Ensenada 4 or 5 of us use for all Immigration matters who is excellent. Her name is Blanca Medina and she will handle everything for you. There will be certain documents you must provide to her, but she's terrific and speaks darned good English. Let me know if you want to contact her.
