Christmas-New Years Trip

socalrat - 8-16-2008 at 04:56 PM

Spent last Xmas and New Years in San Felipe last December. Want to spend 20 or so days in Baja Sur this December.

Pulling a 19' Airstream. Stayed on the beach in San Felipe (Club de Pesca). Looking to be on the beach/sand with full hookups (water, 30a power, and sewer), somewhere on the Sea of Cortez. Traveling with the wife and the dog (a 60 pound Belgian Malinois)

Want someplace warmer than San Felipe was last year. Hoping for someplace with not much to do, but still a decent infrastructure nearby. Want supermarket, place to buy gasoline and propane, purchase beer and ice. Would love to be close enough to town to be able to walk or bicycle, to get a meal or have some drinks.

Strongly considering Los Barilles. Understand there is a very nice On-The-Sand RV park with full hookups there, close to town. Can also make a day trip to Cabo or La Paz...

Driving from Los Angeles. Figuring on leaving on a Friday afternoon, make it to San Diego...spend the night at the border, then out early-early the next morning, down to Guerrero Negro to spend the night, out early the next morning, and finish up the trip to Los Barilles the next day.

Any thoughts? Any suggestions? sure there are lots of things I'm not thinking of... Do I have to worry about not getting gasoline in any of the stretch if I fill up at each opportunity? Do I need Jerry cans for gas? Can I buy firewood in Los Barilles or should I haul a load down? So many questions, and I'm blessed with such ignorance....

any help is appreciated....

rat,
Los Barriles is a great place. Everything you could possibly need is available in town (gas, bank/atm, modern supermarket, tackle shop etc.) I'm not sure where an "on the beach rv park" is but if you have done your homework on that it is a moot point. Your 2 day plan may be a little agressive pulling a camp trailer. You might want to re-consider and take 3 days. If you can make it across the border on Friday and down to San Quintin or better yet El Rosario you can make Mulege the second night and LB from there. Be sure to gas up in El Rosario on the way down, you won't need to bring extra fuel but keep track of mileage between towns and top off often. Take your time driving and have fun....dt

One thing to consider about Los Barriles in December...the North wind. It can blow more than some care for unless you're a wind surfer of course. That being said, Los B meets your infrastructure requirements completely. I was able to buy firewood when I lived in that area.. If you ask around I bet you'll connect with a good source. Bringing some along with you might be a good idea too if you have the room.

The RV camp next to Los Barriles' north beach is the preferred spot for most, its quiet. The beach has lots of white sand but there are rocks in the tide line often, sea urchins and lots of things that make wading and swimming something to be done carefully. Yes there is wind but typically the wind blows in cycles 3-4 days a time-then its calm. The RV park and neighboring beach is predominantly filled with kiters and windsurfers who have kite lines spread up and down the beach, that makes for negotiating shared space and dogs must be careful to not chase kites and bite the kiters and vice versa. There is plenty of room to share.

The beach has good size shore break when the wind blows so its not considered fantastic swimming or snorkeling though Punta Pescadero is near by and is better. Other activities include renting quads to explore arroyos, fishing, visiting the nearby water falls in Santiago... a round of 3 hole golf at Palmas De Cortez, visit to the monument to the flag and football games are broadcast at Tio Pablos!

Typically lots of wood is available in the nearby arroyo following stormy seasons so finding wood is not hard.

Martine Verdugos is smaller and affected by in town neighborhood noise, 1000 dogs barking at night, water and laundry pumps etc... The "people" at Martine's love to fire up their quads at 5am and idle them 'til they stop backfiring next to your bed, then they ride back and forth through the the RV park while they share their "amazing" weather reports and argue about coffee beans, roasted chickens and pineapple pie. Its a great community but a horrible place to sleep.

In LB you can enjoy many restaurants and taco stands, definitely worth a visit and you might as well sign up for kitesurfing and windsurfing lessons.

The one north of town (Playa Norte) - is this the best choice for two non-ATVers with a dog? Lots of beach-combing, cooking over the fire?

Is Playa norte walking distance to town?

thanks for all the replies!

Playa Norte is within walking distance of town. It will be busy there with wind surfers and kite boarders and windy that time of year.

Do not, under any circumstances gas up at the Pemex on the North end of Santa Rosalia (first one you come to on the way down). They know and practice every rip off scam known in Baja. The next one you come to on the left (east side of the road) is much more honest in my expirience...dt
