We have asked around in La Paz and Cd. C and Loreto for good ol' Mineral Spirits but have not found it available. Has anyone seen it available in
BCS? A person told me they did NOT see it at Home Depot in CSL but I'd like a second opinion on that if you have one.
We have tried all of the other available and "suggested" solvents. Still prefer MS.
Thanks mucho.CaboRon - 8-22-2008 at 12:31 PM

I seem to recal hearing the term many years ago ....
Is tha a Canadian thing ?
Or perhaps from the American mid-west ?
Is it alcohol ?

Wow thanks,
I don't think you would want to drink that longlegsinlapaz - 8-22-2008 at 03:28 PM
I always thought that "paint thinner" & "mineral spirits" were one in the same, with turpentine being different. If I've been on the right track,
Comex carries paint thinner. I've seen several other brands, some labeled, some not! Most hardware & paint stores in La Paz & smaller towns
do carry paint thinner. But many frequently buy it in bulk & transfer it to an unmarked plastic quart milk bottle, so you might have to ask for
it.Udo - 8-23-2008 at 08:59 AM
CP,
I hope at least you know what the stuff smells like. You could just open some of the bottles that look like mineral spirits and see if they smell like
what you want.
You may not know what it is called in Spanish, but once smelled, you sould be able to figure it out.rhintransit - 8-23-2008 at 09:10 AM
paint thinner and/or agua grasa (spelling?) are pretty strong down here. I'm an artist and the local variety eats my brushes. Comex has something
called agua grasa Americano which is a bit better but still pretty harsh. I have found 'solvente sin olor' and very occasionally, mineral
spirits...I don't remember the name but that was most definitely what it was...at both Rameriz and Papeleria Agruele (a. art department b. art store)
in La Paz but these were small bottles, not in any volume for use around the house.CP - 8-23-2008 at 10:21 AM
Ya Udo, smell has been our guide. I actually LIKE how mineral spirits smells. All the other available thinners have not been nice. We have smelled
them all... Whew!
Thanks Rhintransit, if they can get the small bottles, maybe they can special order something larger. I will speak with them about it.
Old Hardware Store

We have found real paint thinner, called Mineral Spirits at what used to be called La Purisma, I think its called El Papiro at 16th Sept and Serdan.
They have a parking lot just before the cornor on Serdan, its small but its not easy to find a space on Sept. At the back of the store, there is a
large area of chemicals, lots in glass bottles stacked on racks 6 feet high, avoid Earth Quake times. Otherwise, try True Value or Ace or the Marine
Store at Marina De La Paz. Sept is one way up from the Malecon, the old hardware store will be on your left just before crossing Serdan.CP - 8-25-2008 at 08:40 AM
