Summer Get Away to Asuncion

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 05:22 AM

I am going to attempt a trip report to Asuncion. May take a couple of days. First let me apologize if the pictures are too big. I have just spent hours trying to downsize them and can't take it any more.

We flew into San Diego Aug 8 and drove directly to Squidco to pick up tackle and fishing lisences. What a busy little place that is. Very helpful.

We had decided to take the Tecate border crossing. Want to tell you about that experince but will wait till the end of my report. Something that I think you should be aware of if you are passing through any US customs.

We were delayed in Tecate till 4:00pm so we drove like crazy to meet up with Shari in Ensenada. She gave great directions to the pub that she was at and we made it by 5:00. Well Tim can sniff out a pub 100 miles away so that was no problem.

To our delight Zoe was with her and we piled all their stuff in our compact and off we set for San Quintin. It was dark by the time we got there so us girls were a little freaked. But Tim drove us safely to Cielito Lindo where we chowed down and spent the night.

This was the first time we stayed in the rooms there as we have always stayed in the Motor Home. I thought the rooms were cheap and very clean...$30.00 a night. Only thing was the windows didn't have screens on them and we were eaten alive by mosquitoe's.

The food was excellent as per usual. By the time I remembered to take a picture and get my camera out this was what was left of the meal.

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 05:37 AM

Again sorry bout the size of the pic.

We left San Quintin early the next morning and headed off. Stopped for breaky at El Rosarito, place called......P....Beach. Can't remember now. You should of seen what Zoe had. She is one brave soul I tell ya.

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 05:52 AM

I'll shorten up my sentences and
see if that makes this easier to read.

The rest of the days travel was pretty much
uneventful. The usual pee stops, road
construction and Tecate breaks. Getting
gas was no problem.

This here picture is Shari letting Juan know we
are on our way.

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 05:55 AM

It was so nice coming into Asuncion.
Yes the hotel is underway and the
pavement to town was longer, nice
treat.

Kevin was pretty happy to see us again.
And we finally got to meet Ray. They were
waiting for us and that made us feel special.

Good thing we brought our own beer tho.

Juan the sweetheart that he is had taco's
waiting for us. It felt good to be home.

This here picture is of Kevin showing Tim
the Pacific Ocean, just in case he forgot what
it looked like.

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 06:03 AM

We decided to call it a day
and go and relax at our own
digs.

After a couple more c-cktails
at home I decided to get in my
jammies and snuggle down to bed.
Thats when Tim said, "Barb you still
awake"? "Yea, why"? "We have another
greeter (or did he say critter) to greet us".

I didn't care, I was going to bed.

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 06:12 AM

Next day.....Lets go Fishing

We packed up Kevin and headed
for San Roque to do some shore fishing.

Guys figured they found a good spot.
Tim even caught a Halibut here.

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 06:15 AM

I decided to go for a walk about,
so I went up that hill in the back ground
of the previous picture. This is what I saw.

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 06:17 AM

"Oh guys...I think I know where the fish are".

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 06:21 AM

So up they came and proceded to land
fish. What a great way to start the day.

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 06:25 AM

I decided while they were catching
supper I would go exploring.

Came across this stove that I think is
a classic. I work in a appliance retail
store where we also service what we
sell. I think if I can just find a knob for
this baby I can get the tech's to fix it.

Thanks for sharing the pictures.. enjoyed.
But you didn't say why you were held up at the border.

BirdDog - 8-24-2008 at 06:28 AM

Thanks for the pics Barb. Only 6 days and we'll be there. Hope you enjoyed the casa and everything else.

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 06:32 AM

What was I thinking? Lets get back to Mexico
and not think about work.

I sat down by this little pool of sea water
and saw all sorts of life.

Hope you can make out this little crab
towing a minnow.

And here's another picture of a crab
watching me watching him watching me...

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 06:35 AM

Baja Spirit I will tell you all about that in a bit.

Bird Dog...we enjoyed it alot and thank you so much.
Loved the place.

Barb

BirdDog - 8-24-2008 at 06:38 AM

Glad to hear it. Hope you left some of that big yellowtail luck there for me.

baja-spirit - 8-24-2008 at 06:48 AM

Sorry Barbareno.. thought you had finished and had forgotten. Didn't mean to be pushy. Planning our trip back to Baja for the winter. Hoping we get a trip in to Asuncion. Too hot for me where our house is, so we usually unload our supplies and head out somewhere on the pacific. We haven't been back to Asuncion for about 4yrs. Enjoying the pics... thanks

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 06:54 AM

I will take a bit of a break from my report.

I'll try and talk Tim into telling what happened in Tecate and actually Seattle as well. Its his story, but if he doesn't I will surely tell you.

Barb

Timo1 - 8-24-2008 at 07:33 AM

US Customs
We arrived in Seattle to be detained in secondary for over an hour. Why ??..Because the US has implemented a new computer system..I found this out
later in the day...It seems that I'm now a black dude that is 6 foot 2 .Actually
I'm white and 5 foot 6....anyway...this guy has been doing all sorts of BAD
stuff in Georgia and it shows under my name...I allaborate in a minute..finally
the custums guy says he will get this cleared up and sent us
on our way
On to San Diego and Tecate...When crossing at Tecate...one must park on the
US side and walk to immagration for papers and to pay for them then back thru US Customs to get back to the car...Guess what...Yupper...Back to secondary.

This time tho the Customs agent was VERY pleasent. helpfull, and informative...22 years ago I had a DUI in Ca and the system confused me with this other fellow

The agent told me about the new computer system that came into effect last month and that the agents are VERY unhappy with it as it is crossing
people by birthdate, first name, last name, or all.
He said they are sweeping everyone in and mostly the innocent.
Yes..there was a family of 6 this happened to in Seattle at the same time as
us
I asked if this was because of the DUI and he told me that its happening
to anyone irregardless of their past.
He also commented...Do you realize how many Juan Garcias we have to process ??
So we finally were let go for our vacation with the assurance that he would
MAKE SURE this would come off my name for future crossings
He asked when we would be crossing back and told us that he comes on shift that day at 3 pm i case there are any further problems.

The last day in Baja arrives and we are on pins and needles as we approach
the Tecate crossing at 4 pm.
The guy at the booth takes our passports...swipes them...asks what part of Canada we are from and promptly goes into a 20 minute run-down on his hockey carreer. I'm sweating bullets and having trouble breathing and this guy wants to talk hockey

Have a nice day and we're on our way

We still don't know if my name is cleared and I will be driving to the border
in a couple weeks just to make sure

We really appreciated the agent at Tecate

By the way...no wait at Tecate..no line

Tim

Lauriboats - 8-24-2008 at 07:44 AM

Great pictures, thanks for sharing, next trip (if were in Asuncion) stop by our place for a c-cktail or two. We love to share Baja stories. Jim and Lauri

Barbareno - 8-24-2008 at 08:11 AM

Hey thanks Grover for the info. With the help of Diane I
am using Photo Bucket. Thought I had all the pictures sized
right. 448 x 336. Something like that.

For my next attempt at picture posting
I will try and pay attention more. I am so
green at this. I can't wait to try cropping.

So much too learn so little brain cells.

Barb

DianaT - 8-24-2008 at 11:10 AM

Barb---remember to resize before you put them on photobucket---can do several at a time---but be sure you only downsize COPIES---protect the originals.

Sure enjoyed seeing both of you. And that very first picture you posted is my absolute favorite!

See you soon

Diane

Real nice trip report, Barbareno. I especially like the screen-size image of the two men fishing - great shot, makes me feel like I'm right there with my feet in the water. Thank you.

Bajaboy - 8-24-2008 at 12:30 PM

Hey Barb-

Glad you and Tim had a great trip and were able to give my mom a lift. Our baby, Gabriel, finally arrived early Monday morning. We plan on introducing him to everyone in Asuncion hopefully in November.

Thanks again for all the great posts.

"O.K. I'll bite [ not really ] what is that thing Zoe is about to eat ??? "

i know what it LOOKS like...:lol::lol::lol:

Barbareno - 8-25-2008 at 08:45 AM

Thanks again for the nice comments. I am
real new at this picture posting and even
taking pictures.

Jim and Lauri I think I know where you live,
walked by there on my morning hoof, saw
workers busy at it.

Zac congrats on the new addition. Every day
that we saw Zoe we would ask if there was
any news. This time because we had that
rental car we drove around town. We found
your place and Tim recognized it just from
the pictures you posted. We are so green
with envy. We are hoping to be back come
Dec-Jan again.

Capt. Mike has it right. Gooie duck. Zoe really
didn't have that for breakfast just wanted to
pull her chain in case she comes on here.

Diane I really want to play around with photobucket
once I get this report done. Practice makes perfect.

Barb

Iflyfish - 8-25-2008 at 08:50 AM

What fun to again visit Asuncion. Great candid shots of this lovely place!
Didn't know they had Gooie Duck in Mexico, great clam!
Thanks

Barbareno - 8-25-2008 at 09:00 AM

Well the majority of our trip was all about fishing.
Tim really wanted to get back in a Panga and land
a Yellow Tail.

A fellow that we met that was staying a couple houses
down from us asked him if he would like to share
a day out with Juan. Duh. Ed was into jigging for calico
bass and Juan knew just where to take them. On their
way back home they figured why not try YT.

I had been outside reading when Shari pops over to
chat and invite me to her place for tea (riiiiiight) when her
phone rings. Its Juan, they have caught a mess load of
fish and will be back in 1/2 hour. Bring your camera. Oh and
by the way Tim has caught the first YT of the season.

Well an hour plus later they finally showed up. Guess the
YT were biting hard and it was impossible to leave.

Here are some pictures of the guys coming in and their catch.

Barbareno - 8-25-2008 at 09:04 AM

We went up to Shari and Juan's place
to supervise the cleaning.

Barbareno - 8-25-2008 at 09:07 AM

Then we proceeded to chow down.

Ed knows what he is doing on the BBQ
and if he ever offers to cook take him up
on it. That bass was awesome.

Shari treated us to sushi. My first taste
of it and love it. I have her secret sauce
and will give it a whirl myself.

Barbareno - 8-25-2008 at 09:09 AM

Hey that picture of Tim....sure looks like
his icon here.

Barb

Bajagypsy - 8-25-2008 at 09:14 AM

Glad you guys had such a great time, wish we could have made it down.

Barbareno - 8-25-2008 at 10:13 AM

Wish you could of made it down as well
Bajagypsy. Next time for sure ey?

The next pictures are right out our front
door. Kids and dog were having a total
blast out playing in the surf. That was the
place to be. Ahh to be young again.

Hey take a look at the last photo. There's a
sea lion in there. He was just minding his own
buisness when he comes along this party.
It sure did look like he wanted to be in on
the action. Lets play. Well maybe he was
thinking "I got me a smorgisborg". What
ever it was he had those kids hooping and
hollering up a storm. Actually we were all
screaming.

Barbareno - 8-25-2008 at 10:30 AM

The Carnival arrived. Again we were staying
just a hop skip and jump away.

The last photo is very dear to me. Prior to us
leaving for Asuncion Tim informs me he wants
to ride a horse while there. "Say what"? Thats
what confirmed me that he is going through
male menopause. He hasen't riden a horse in
30 years plus. So I quickly jot down Robaxaset
on my list of things to haul down. This is as close
as he got.

shari - 8-25-2008 at 10:35 AM

Great pictures amiga...see you are gettin the drift of it now....oh oh...I LOVE the ones of the dinghy races...with the dinghy looking like it's going into orbit...we sure had a great laugh watching that...and the sea lion jumping at the kids!

Barbareno - 8-25-2008 at 11:05 AM

Shari it was a week ago today that we left
your village. Snif snif.

Okay I am gonna wrap this up. May still post some
pictures during my learning curve.

Shari let me thank you again for the
wonderful memories. Oh dang I never
did talk about the horse racing day.

As some are already aware Juan, Tim and I
placed 4th in the YT tourney. And here is
proof that Juan landed it. Hope you can see
the smile on his face when he knew he had
a whooper on.

rbwrivers - 8-25-2008 at 11:16 AM

Thanks for all the great pics. It's made this past week so much more bearable. Only one more night before we leave.
