Tecate Pamplonada - running of the bulls - what years?

TecateRay - 8-25-2008 at 09:23 AM

Does anyone remember which years the Tecate Pamplonada took place? I just "resurrected" an old poster of the event and I want to note the years. I believe it was only held twice and I ran both times ( young and dumb, not brave).

Tecate info.... found this answer so far searching google.

In Tecate, the pamplonada, or running of the bulls, was ordinarily held in August in the 80's and early 90's along one of the main drags. But cancelled because of a series od accidents and violence.

I'll keep looking. Bob H

Found this little blurb also...

"In the past, the Basque players congregated every Thursday night, their “off” night, at the Chiki-Jai restaurant located across the street from the Fronton Palacio. Nowadays, they appear frequently at the restaurant La Costa. Another example of their companionship was reflected in their appearance at the second annual Pamplonada ’80 held in Tecate, Mexico, an event patterned after the celebrated running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. To the delight of the 25,000 spectators, the Basques danced, sang, drank wine out of botas and, of course, ran before the bulls in traditional white pants, shirts, and red neck scarves."

So, I would say the first event was in August 1979.

Here is the entire article - interesting stuff.

I was there to watch it... probably in 1981... for the running of the bulls in Tecate. Do you want to see photos?

A co-worker/ friend from the irrigation store I managed and I cruised down to Tecate to watch the Running of the Bulls, a Mexican (Baja) version of the famous Pamplona, Spain event.

A small side street, parallel to Mex. 2 was used... My friend and I joined other spectators atop a block wall and waited...

The crazy ones were in the street waiting to challange the bulls...

The previous year very large bulls were used and they won!

This year's event, the bulls were smaller and the runners had a better chance... although a couple were gored when they were facing the wrong way!

You see, once the bulls made it to the end of the run, they were turned around and surprised the crazy ones looking for more from the stating line!

Some ganged up on a few bulls... seen below...

At the end, the bulls were lead to the arena were matadors were waiting to finish them off... We were told the meat was to be donated to orphanages!!

These are some of the photos I took back then (1981 +/- 1 year)

Thanks for the photos! I was there the first two years (the only ones?) They made a poster year two from a photo taken on year one - I'm in the picture - trying to climb over the fence to get away!!! Since it was a temporary fence, it was sturdy enough to keep you in, but too flexy to climb. I think our worst infuries were a few scrapes and hangovers.

So Ray, the pictures I took look real familiar to you? It was at least the second running of the bulls, because people were saying that the bulls were smaller than "last year's"...
