What are you doing Labor Day weekend?

GeoRock - 8-28-2008 at 11:15 AM

Pete will be working on the house while I mix batches of Sangrita. No lemonaid for this hard-working man. We are staying home in Mammoth for the weekend to enjoy our own town for a change.

Last weekend we backpacked a total of 19.5 miles Friday to Sunday, to go to one of the most beautiful places on earth: Thousand Island Lake.

What are you up to this weekend, my fellow nomad?

Thousand Island Lake is one of the magnificent high country lakes! One of my favorites in your area for a shorter day hike is Valentine---don't know for sure why, but I just love it there.

Labor Day we will be here in Bahia Asuncion enjoying it NOT being a holiday here---too many people in Imperial Beach.

But some time in the near future we will be back in the Eastern Sierras----love Baja, but need the mountains real bad---need to hug a tree and having traveled accross the US, we always feel back at home in the Eastern Sierras.

We will be in La Mision starting tomorrow....looking forward to a lot of beach time and getting some surf. Sunday night is the La Mision Fandango, which is a fund raiser to support education for the local kids. Should be a great weekend!

We will be boating (partying) on the San Joaquin Delta.

Sharksbaja - 8-28-2008 at 11:37 PM

A great lake! Been there few times. There are some awesome Golden trout half breeds in there> One of my all time favorite places! Plus a great climb up from the trailhead. Were there many folks there. When we went in the 70's there was nobody there.

Isn't that the same trail that keeps on going up to Thunder & Lightning Lake? Always a glacier along it's banks. Fantastic country, you are lucky to have that at your back.

Oh! Funny you ask and what a coincidence.
Labor Day in 06' "John" Labor Day in 08' "Julio"
(well close enough)

You know we will spend our real first day off in 3 months celebrating only with our family in 3 months. We do it up with all the trimmings. I will prepare one of my fabulous specialty stuffed range turkey.
Wild rice, smashed tatters, whole cranberries, corn on the cob, wild mushroom stuffing or ?? plus gravy, biscuits and fruit.

I'm of course always in the kitchen mode regardless of the date or holiday. No biggie anymore, I just have a routine that's simple and fun and good eating.

We celebrate Labor Day figuretively. Please sweetie, pass the potatoes. Does potato have an "E"?

Chin up I say, man the decks, grab yer shovels mate!! Life (and Labor Days) only come once a year, get the most of one !!:tumble:

I refuse to be beat down by a bunch of refuters. I choose my place, my life and my risks. It's what my bag holds. If we decide to clean and rebuild why should I be made to feel guilty? It's our choice, our decision, our lives.

We feel blessed regardless of the hurtles and obstacles in life. Aferall, "LIfes' a beach" Maybe that's something one might not share in principal because of the potential or even real loss of money, momentos and physical possessions.

Sharing and giving is something I have done all my life. That to me means also of giving of yourself more than just signing off a check for the cause.

While many folks may share this labor borne relationship the emphasis of interest and conversation lies in the realm of money and economics.

To me they are separate entities. While money may make a project feasible only the labor of man will make it work. So what are the armchair givers and wizards, they wield big bold swords of words but when the mustard needs to be cut they have no spoon.;D

To be a laborer is to understand and enjoy self-fullfilled feats and tasks. To utilize your physical prowess and march towards completion and reward of those accomplishments.

To those people willimg to roll up their sleeves....my gratitude.
To those who choose the path of life with blinders on. You make our job hard.

Remember those days in your lives which carved out your unending interests, chances are that those days were some of your most laborious.

Happy Labor Day......... and I mean it!!!

Gawd I luv that photo......memories flyfishing and hopping from boulder to boulder..... wow!

Cute stud Paulina...

Oh, nice photo of Dern, too!:light:

Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend... My new wife and I are hoping to get onto Shell Island for some peaceful days of just sand and the Sea of Cortez... We like it when it is bathtub warm in the water all day and all night!

The only 'iffy' is that it is a new moon tomorrow with very high tides ... and I don't call it an 'island' for no reason!:o

If not Shell Island, then maybe Gonzaga Bay... You know to see it one more time before the approaching pavement ruins it forever!:light:

We're at the point of washing walls and electric sockets. Its going fast this time.

Really good to hear you are still smiling Mulegena...come and visit us if ya wanna take a break when you finish.
Even though it isn't a holiday in mexico, every day is like a holiday for me when I wake up in such a lovely place.
Juan has been fishing fishing fishing...keeping busy taking the hooks out of all those yellowtail mouths...keeps him hoppin around the panga for sure as there are always double strikes....and one after another. The smiling clients complain of very sore wrists and arms but love the masseuse who comes to their casa after fishing to rub away the pain.
We did escape to a secret beach spot yesterday for a nice afternoon of swimming. The beaches were full of croaker fishermen over the last few days. All our friends and relatives have had nice yellowtail dinners.

I'm spending the weekend herding RV's around in the Sol Duc RV park!

But, if you have to work, the Olympic National Park and Sol Duc Hot Springs is a great place to do it!!!

It's not all work though, we have relatives visiting (in their RV's) and will have a feast in the forest on Monday with all the usual picnic/bbq food; including homemade fresh apple pie ala mode.

lots of pacifico's.....ice cold.

Water was in the early 80's. Tomorrow will be better. Same as above without the crowds. Hope all you Nomads have a great Labor Day, without the labor.

Headed to Fontana yesterday a.m.
watched Jimmy Johnson (whose Dad was a real Baja racer)
drive 500 miles to victory,
then drove home and arrived at 3 a.m.

Jimmy drove 500, I drove 755

Just a typical California weekend.

We were up in the Sierras since Wed. for camping, swimming, and dirt biking fun. Got back a day early to get my head together for the week to come. Today I will give thanks and reflection to those who have made it possible for us to more fully participate in our economy which allows fantastic indulgences such as foreign travel/retirement, time off for driving to our favorite camping/hiking spots in our nice vehicles, our good food, and so many other things we often take for granted. I salute those in our past who have risked their families' wellbeing and everything else by being fired, blackballed, arrested, and worse in order to allow future generations of the unwashed masses to more fully help in the building of the greatest nation yet and in turn helping it become a stabilizing force for much of the world.

stimbo - 9-2-2008 at 09:04 PM

fished at the local "hole."

Hook - 9-2-2008 at 09:52 PM

1000 island Lake. Hiked there in the early 90's from over Donohue Pass, coming from T-meadows.

That lake still has the largest average catch of any lake I have fished, including Upper Crabtree, Desolation Lake, Sky-Blue Lake and Wallace Lake. Not necessarily the largest fish but the largest average. All we caught were fish that were 15 inches; nothing larger or smaller. And they were hungry all the time.

Our Labor Day was finalizing our lot designs and reading the boat for it's initial launch in San Carlos. Pretty boring, really.

David K - 9-3-2008 at 12:07 AM

We got home tonight after two days & nights on Shell Island, then a trip south to Gonzaga Bay and up to Baja Cactus in El Rosario, last night...

We had a beautiful 2 days on the beach and got sooo much sun (after the heavy rain driving to San Felipe Saturday morning), that a day in the A/C Tacoma, dinner at Alfonsina's, and a night at the Baja Cactus in El Rosario would be a perfect way to end the Baja trip for Elizabeth's birthday!

Antonio's staff at Baja Cactus were awesome ... See Baja Angel's reply to Antonio in her birthday thread...

Antonio, that was really awesome my friend! Thank you for making our Baja weekend all that more special!!!

Photos and detailed trip report coming soon!

Stimbo,

No fireworks that we saw. We stayed in Lee Vining. Had a GREAT dinner at the Mobile station. Do you know the place? People drive from Tuolome Meadows and Mammoth to eat there.

Nice shots of the Lake. Great to see so much water in it now!

Amazing photos!!
Fantastic, breathtaking compositions.

Just curious - what cameras do you use?
I may want to upgrade soon.

Skipjack Joe - 9-4-2008 at 10:28 AM

Nice pictures guys. The last one of tufas came out really well didn't it? Good sky and the right lighting. I never did get one of them that I was satisfied with. But I saw plenty of good ones in calendars. The tufas just didn't inspire me somehow. Perhaps at early morning it would be different.

Anyway, I remember the first time I saw mono lake. We got off the highway and I headed for the water. Next thing I know we were sinking knee deep in mud that lined the lakeshore. Every time you pulled out your shoe there would be a foot of mud stuck to the bottom of it. Now they have a visitor center with a nice boardwalk for you.

The gulls feed on brine shrimp in the lake. You can see their heads constantly bobbing into the water as the pick up a few. I decided to look for them underwater on my last trip. Dove in and opened my eyes. It felt like acid on my eyeballs. That water is really salty. Much more so than the ocean.

That's all.

stimbo - 9-4-2008 at 05:29 PM

Hey David K -- Yeah, you are right, this post has gone off on a non-Baja tangent. I'm sure it will end soon, but in the meantime, it has been fun reading about and getting to know what other Nomads do when not in Baja. The, "What are you doing for Labor Day weekend?" theme opened the door to a variety of activities. Hang in there... we'll come full circle and get back on topic. I for one, can't wait to load up my truck and cross the Border again. I love the place!

I am all for Nomads ('our Baja family') sharing non Baja trip reports and interesting photos.

But, some would rather Baja Nomads only share Baja trip photos... So, a poll was taken, and the people who liked to see other places too, were the majority...

We are only waiting for Doug to make us a forum so the minority voters don't have to look at non Baja photos if they click on a Nomad Baja Trip Reports or Baja Photos forum. Just trying to be respectful!:light:

Can't wait to get there! Love it so much.

Skipjack----love your Mono Lake story. Many, many years ago I introduced a friend to Mono Lake----the first thing he did was think he needed to taste the water just to see how salty it was----boy, never saw anyone spit water out that far.:lol:

The battle to save Mono Lake has been so important and the history of that area so interesting.

Stimbo, those pictures of Mono are outstanding---talk about finding the right light!
