Loreto-The Inn At Loreto Bay

JaraHurd - 8-29-2008 at 08:52 PM

I just wanted to comment on our recent two day stay at the Inn. This hotel is located approx 7 miles north of Loreto. We paid $250ish for a very nice room. We were fairly pleased with the hotel overall. Our biggest beef is with the horrible parking situation. There is practically none. I drove my vehicle from Los Angeles and upon arriving had practically nowhere to park it. Was not pleased. Also, the drive from town to the hotel sucked. The last mile or so is a winding drive through a construction zone. I expected to find a nail in my tire each morning but thankfully that never happened.

The restaurant was very nice, prices were reasonable (atleast to me). The food was decent but having spent 6 years eating military food, I am not a picky eater. The pool and poolside restaurant were well run and very clean. With the exception of a few smug Euros, everyone seem content and festive.

I would stay here again ONLY if I did not have my own vehicle and intended to spend more time at the hotel..which we did not. ...

Bob and Susan - 8-30-2008 at 05:50 AM

very little nails used here...
it would have been a stick of rebar:biggrin::biggrin:

capt. mike - 8-30-2008 at 06:28 AM

two hundred fifty dollars a night??!! are you serious? for a nice room?

you can stay in town at the posada de las flores for that kind of jack, parked once and been able to walk all over town centro for bars and food.

and i thought the Oasis was getting pricey at $100 a nite.

sorry.....i am cheap in my old age i guess. $30 a nite huts at San Francisquito is about my speed anymore.:lol::lol:

Bob and Susan - 8-30-2008 at 06:31 AM

welcome to 2008 captain mike...

AVGAS used to be 25 cents a gallon too...:biggrin:

when i started air motoring around the peninsula circa '80 you could fill the tanks on the piper 180 i was flying then for about $30 - 40 in mexico and go for 600 miles!!

now it's $450 - 500 abouts to load up my 90 gals in the Comanche and go maybe 1000 miles!:no:

JaraHurd - 8-30-2008 at 01:39 PM

Capt Mike....maybe next time. Wanted to pamper my wife a little while staying in Loreto. But I will save the info from this post and consider the other options. Always good to have other options!

$250 pesos, right? Not USD.

elizabeth - 8-30-2008 at 04:02 PM

For future trips to Loreto, you can stay at Las Cabaņas de Loreto or Cocos Cabaņas for less than $100 a day and have a nice place to stay with a pool, a block from a beach and within easy walking distance of a lot of good food. Do a google search or a trip advisor search and you'll find lots better places to stay that are actually in Loreto. If you go to VRBO you can find other rentals that offer way more in value than the Inn at Loreto Bay.

$250 a day to stay in the sterile atmosphere of the Inn at Loreto Bay doesn't seem much like being pampered to me.

I don't go into Nordstroms...but she do..

JaraHurd - 8-30-2008 at 04:26 PM

Agreed Elizabeth. BUT she agreed to go fishing and I tried to reciprocate. And she did a good job. I am trying to be nice but the Inn did not impress either one of us. She is used to nice but can also do the fishing thing. We know what nice is but do not like to waste money. Hey, it was an experience.

Where were you guys 6 months ago when I was asking for the very same advice?

I am not a Trip Advisor fan. I would rather get feedback from Nomad. I have had my posts on Advisor edited..don't trust it!

Gimme a break. I am a Southern hick who likes to fish. Don't I get any credit for trying? ....

bill erhardt - 8-30-2008 at 04:28 PM

Jarahurd..... Loreto Bay, along with the Inn, is the blight to the south of Loreto, not north.

JaraHurd - 8-30-2008 at 04:41 PM

got it Bill. First time in Loreto. Next time I will be a bit more familiar with a lot of things there. And I will be back!!

I wasn't intending to criticize...I was offering good (from my point of view) choices for the future...and, I'm sorry but I didn't see your request for advice 6 months ago. Would just like to see you try something better in a town that I really like.

JaraHurd - 8-30-2008 at 06:19 PM

No, I appreciate your input Elizabeth. Trust me, I am taking notes and next year when I book a fishing trip, I will take your input under consideration. Now I know about the Inn..It was NOT terrible, however,,..just a bit of a pain with the parking and construction.

las Cabanas -- the best

Lee - 8-30-2008 at 06:49 PM

I second Las Cabanas in Loreto. Homey, wifi, secure. You'll like it.

cajhawk - 9-11-2008 at 03:57 PM

I've stayed for around $120 a night, but never $250! Posada de las Flores was around $150 and I really enjoyed. Can also walk to restaurants and bars from there.

Out in the desert? Why so far north of Loreto... with the rest of Loreto Bay being a few miles south of Loreto?:?:

I bet you meant south of Loreto...:light:

Seriously, $250 per night, in Baja... meals and drinks included... and full spa too?:wow:

JaraHurd - 9-11-2008 at 08:56 PM

First time visitor in Loreto, got my geography turned around. But based on my research at the time, I came up with no other places that were in between lower end and the upper end that is the Inn. Besides, I wanted my wife to have access to a spa to have her nails and hair done, etc. She is very patient with me and very deserving of stuff like that. Also, I did visit Trip Advisor but I do not trust that site as they have HEAVILY EDITED my posts there. Nomad is awesome but I did not get a lot of feedback on places to stay in Loreto. I will keep this thread and use it for my next visit. The only thing I know for sure is what outfit I will use to arrange a fishing trip! ...

Paula - 9-11-2008 at 09:31 PM

Jara, your wife can get a very nice shampoo and style, manicure, pedicure, facial and massage at Norma's salon right downtown in Loreto. It's one block from Posada de las Flores, and not much farther from Cabanas de Loreto. English is spoken there so it is easy to make an appointment. The decor is very nice, as good a salon as you'll find anywhere.

Hotelwise, I'd chose Cabanas de Loreto-- definitely fit for a queen, or anyone who enjoys a nice hotel:dudette:

I too am looking at going to loreto, thinking of staying at la mision, a new resort style hotel just opened in fall of 2008

You will be pleasantly surprised. This newly redone hotel is now, by far, the fanciest place in Loreto. Beats the Loreto Bay Inn hands down. Beautifully done. And all this in the best location possible. Haven't seen the rooms, but if they are anything like the rest of the place, like dining room, bar ,swimming pool, terraces etc, you will not be disappointed. However, still not completely finished at this moment, with a lot of detailing to be done yet. No doubt this will be "THE IN SPOT" in the future.

Bajahowodd - 1-3-2009 at 08:52 PM

Face it. The Inn at Loreto Bay is not in Loreto. It's the old Camino Real hotel that was rebuilt. They use it as a cover to sell property in the Loreto Bay development. Those prices quoted could get you a five star place in Los Cabos. I have no problem if folks want to live in that sterile gringo environment. But, it's not Loreto. Lots of fine places to stay and dine in Loreto. Looking forward to checking out La Mision soon. Love Augies. And in the heat of the summer, usually stay at Hacienda Suites and eat at Domingo's, so I don't have to spend much time in the heat.

JaraHurd - 1-3-2009 at 09:00 PM

Well it was my first time in Loreto. I have a greater understanding of the area now. Any posting will be greatly appreciated. I was not that impressed with the resort. And the construction was very annoying. The parking lot was ridiculously small.

During our drive from LA to La Paz we stayed in many hotels. Some nicer than others. All were interesting. The only one I will never stay in again was the one in Mulege. But the rest were fine.

Bajahowodd - 1-3-2009 at 09:05 PM

Please give us more detail on your trip. Where you stayed and where you ate. One of the reasons we are here is to share info and encourage enjoyment of the baja experience.

willc73 - 1-3-2009 at 09:05 PM

From what I can see the la mision looks great on the website. about $200 per night for an ocean view. Inn at Loreto was offering $150 per night, however I didn't like the location. I am trying to decide to go to Loreto, Cabo, or Caribbean (puerto rico, or St. lucia) for a week in march. Love the price of Loreto. Cabo is a little pricier, seems to be at least $250 per night, more for 5 star place. Caribbean starts at $250 a night for a dump.

Bajahowodd - 1-3-2009 at 09:14 PM

Go to Cabo. Better air rates. Try the Finesterra. $100 a night or so. Walk to town. Dolphinarium across the street.

willc73 - 1-3-2009 at 09:16 PM

well, we use miles to go to mexico, air doesn't matter. Wife needs resort style. Must have spa, etc. on beach, etc.

Bajahowodd - 1-3-2009 at 09:46 PM

Use sidestep.com. Check out the Cabo deals. Many hotels with spas. Not dissing Loreto, which I love, but you just don't sound like the wife will like it there.

Bajahowodd - 1-3-2009 at 09:48 PM

My only hook for Cabo is that I have a place there. Lord knows, they probably don't need the money as badly as Loreto because of all the sold timeshares. But places like Sheraton Hacienda del Mar would fill your bill.

willc73 - 1-3-2009 at 09:50 PM

thanks, I will check that stuff out. appreciate it.

JaraHurd - 1-4-2009 at 04:54 PM

I agree it would be very nice if everyone shared their experiences. My trip was in late Aug 2008. Very nice trip except for getting caught in Tropical Storm Julio. I will, in the next few days as time allows, add a little more about Baja Sur. I will have to refer to my notes and rethink the trip. We (wife and I) spend about two weeks down there but it flew by so fast. The experiences are now fading. I guess it is time for another trip!! !!

JaraHurd - 1-4-2009 at 05:01 PM

Will C..maybe I can help. I am pretty much a novice when it comes to Baja. I drove down to Mulege in 2007 and as far as La Paz (well Todos Santos but that was a day trip from La Paz) in 2008. Went with a buddy in 2007 and my wife in 2008. Loreto was ok but I would go again (but not stay in the same hotel...). We wereboth very impressed with La paz. VERY. She LOVED Todos Santos. I thought it was nice but I wanted to go fishing, not shopping. But it is a very nice town. Any questions?

My wife is not a snob at all but does enjoy the finer things in life on occasion. She is in upper management but a Mexican immigrant. She did just as fine in our nicer hotel in Loreto (ok..ok..Nopalo..whatever..) as she did when we had to sleep in an abandoned house when the road home washed out in about 7 places when Tropical Storm Julio hit Mulege in August. My point is that she does not whine when a town only offers a hotel with a one or two star hotel but expects a pricier hotel to deliver. the one in Loreto did not. But as some have pointed out, our hotel was not in Loreto. So I am gettting educated on some options for our next visit. Ask away if you haveany questions... Jon

Russ - 1-4-2009 at 05:34 PM

JaraHurd, I think you are like many of us. Come down to enjoy and learn as much as possible. Find out you really do like it and make plans to return asap. Try this site: http://www.bajabigfish.com/ -- Pam is a nomad and she and her husband run a first class service. Give her a call and learn when to come down and if she can book you in a place of your dreams. I'll bet she'll preform magic for you & the wife.

JaraHurd - 1-4-2009 at 05:47 PM

Russ..funny you should mention Pam. I had reservations to use her outfit to go fishing when we were enroute to Loreto. Due to this and that we were late into town. Very late actually. She told me the night prior to our arrival to call her, no matter how late we arrived. We finally arrived at our hotel at 9 pm. And I called. She was AWESOME. Explained everything. Took care of everything. I ended up buying about 10 T-shirts from her so all of my buddies are fishing or working out in them here in L.A.

To me, Pam is Loreto. She made a very positive impression on me. I would go out of my way to visit Loreto simply to go fishing with Big Baja Fishing Co again. Too bad I have forgotten the skipper's name that we went out with. Class act. very patient. You could not be more correct. Jon

Russ - 1-4-2009 at 05:59 PM

I'm really glad to here that about Pam. So now you can book your next adventure and change you mood to "fixed"

JaraHurd - 1-4-2009 at 06:04 PM

Not a bad idea!! !!

Tiomiguel - 1-4-2009 at 06:33 PM

We stay in Loreto each year on the way to Bahia Asuncion as we fly out of Loreto. We have stayed at the Inn on Loreto Bay once when our flight was cancelled, courtesy of the airline. It was a great place with certainly the nicest rooms in Loreto, nice pool, and certainly not very crowded for dinner or otherwise. Not many people there so not sure how they make any money even at $250US per night.

We have stayed at the Oasis and found it very nice, good restaurant, on the ocean, with not a bad pool, but always pretty cold as so close to the ocean. Since we take the bus often, we now stay at the Hacienda Inn which is downtown right across from the Bus Station. Very nicely kept, clean and good rooms and about $95 per night, not so good for parking either though. Only problem is that it is a little noisier in the morning due to traffic. The Hacienda is closer to downtown than the Oasis and a little easier to get to shopping area.
The other hotel we stayed at was on a back road near the Aroya but it was noisy at night, Mexican prices of $30 per night and a long walk to get down to the town.
Its nice to spoil oneself sometimes in Mexico so I understand completely why you chose the Inn on the Bay. Someday we would like to check out Bob and Susan's place when it works for our schedule.
Some pretty good choices in the city,

willc73 - 1-4-2009 at 07:28 PM

Thanks everyone. I have been convinced not to go to Baja. I am looking into Belize or elsewhere in the caribbean.

Bob and Susan - 1-4-2009 at 07:37 PM

JaraHurd did stop by as i recall but...

they had special needs we couldn't accomodate
and I sent them into town...

their bad experience in town was probably partly my fault
i should have assisted them more as hindsite

they were traveling at a BAD time

glad i wasn't on the road

JaraHurd - 1-4-2009 at 07:51 PM

Bob..u were awesome and did warn me. You did nothing wrong and i thank you for your offer to have me stay at your place. I should have been traveling with a 4wd vehicle. That would have helped a lot. Once again.... you did warn me and were very accomodating. I do intend on staying at your place some day!! Jon

wilderone - 1-7-2009 at 11:36 AM

Jara-your wife should accept Baja on its own terms - Baja sur has the spas, manicure places and wait staff for her every demand and unreasonable expectation - but the rest of Baja is not what that's about. Maybe you should leave her home next time and have a real good time fishing-save a ton of money too.

willc73 - 1-7-2009 at 11:46 AM

wow, way to people how to live their life Wilderone.

wilderone - 1-7-2009 at 02:57 PM

Well, after reading the following posted on this PUBLIC forum, where people routinely ask how to live their lives, I thought a separate vacation would really open the gates for this guy to have a really great fishing trip. Nothing worse than someone along who's a drag on the itinerary.

she agreed to go fishing
She is used to nice but can also do the fishing thing
I am a Southern hick who likes to fish
wife to have access to a spa to have her nails and hair done
She is very patient with me
She LOVED Todos Santos
but does enjoy the finer things in life
expects a pricier hotel to deliver

I know more than a few couples where the guy would love to hang in Baja. Fish, drink offroad all the fun stuff...........but his esposa would not want a part of it. Baja (not counting the Chi Chi resorts of Cabo) does not appeal to a lot of people.

The guys in my scenerio have two choices! (well maybe a few more but you get my point.):coolup::lol:

well I met Mrs Jara in the flesh and she didn't strike me as being how we say down here "especial" I often get these kinds of requests by the husband of significant other regarding their wife or girlfriend and they may perceive her needs to be a certain way that communicates high maintenance when in fact they really aren't that way at all. this is how I saw Mrs Jara to be. She roughed it when they were stuck in the car with TS Julio that's commendible. sometimes one wishes to treat their other half to the finer things in life while on a restful vacation. that's fine they deserve it. She was a real sport and their Captain Eulogio enjoyed fishing with them too.

Baja's Own Terms?

JaraHurd - 1-8-2009 at 04:41 PM

Leave my wife home? Why? SHe has paid her dues. She is an immigrant from Mexico. Grew up dirt poor both in Mex then in California. Busted her butt and went to college. Graduated with honors. Complains not. She deserves everything she gets in life, hope it is all good. She is an awesome person who enjoys herself where ever she goes. She is a giver and helps may people.

What are Baja's own terms? I think Baja means something different to each person. We are very respectful people and enjoy every community we pass through, rich or poor. I enjoy having her around and the trips to the store are a small price to pay for having such an outstanding person in my life. Everyone should be so lucky as I.

Southern Hick

JaraHurd - 1-8-2009 at 04:53 PM

Wilderone

I have been warned not to let people like you suck me in ..but..I gotta ask....What do you have against people from the South? Are are you simply bored and trying ruin another thread?

wilderone - 1-9-2009 at 10:37 AM

Oh fercrissake - I don't have anything against people from the South - yes, I'm bored - I'm not trying to RUIN a thread - my comments were based on your comments - I felt sorry for you - a fisherman who has to wheedle his wife to let him fish - ok - that's probably going to rub you the wrong way too. I'm very happy for you and wife - really - your wife especially - overcoming her hardships in life. But you're still at it: "the trips to the store are a small price to pay" - always paying a price - always a compromise - that's marriage in a nutshell - but YOU express it in those terms, so I gotta think it's not sitting well with you 100% of the time. ok - I'm done here - have a nice life - both of you - and I sincerely mean it.
And I apologize if I stepped on any toes.

We use to stay at the Inn when it was the Diamond Eden. It was all inclusive , food, drink & water toys. 15 years ago we use to stay for 11 days for $600 including airfare from the States for two. It was a GREAT place. It was our fav until it changed hands.
