Ken

those are some great shots, as usual. when were they taken?

Ken Bondy - 9-1-2008 at 07:13 PM

Thanks woody. Those were both taken in 1986 on a liveaboard trip on the old Baja Explorador out of La Paz.

Ah, your photos always make me smile.
Thanks Ken !!

I love the sense of movement in the first one. Amazing how you can do that with a still picture.

The second one. Well, let's just say I would mind lowering my sardina in there. ;)

As always, Kens treasures are wonderful.I too love the sense of movement in the first,as SJ put it.Old, new, still lovely and takes the mind under water with you.

Once again...thanks for the photos. The photo of the jacks reminds me of a dive in Xcalack, Quintana Roo, when I was surrounded by tarpon.

I love the way the light shines on the sea lion and rocks...beautiful composition. Thanks for sharing!!

I've heard the same thing. But, they are fun to catch because they put up a decent fight. We used to keep them for fertilizer around our trees when I was a kid in Miami.

Yes, I've tried it once and didn't complete it, Ken. But I know the locals make machaca from it and it may be that you just have to know a good way to prepare it. I'm not the most imaginative cook, if you know what I mean.

On the other hand I once came across a mound of dead jacks on a beach just south of Loreto. The fishermen just have netted them, realized that they had zero market value, and let them rot in the sun. The stench was incredible. Too bad, they are a great gamefish - perhaps the best nearshore fish in the Cortez.

BTW I once free dived into a school of roosterfish like that and had the same reaction: where are you guys when I'm fishing?

P.S. when I was a youngster living in socal we treated bonito in the same manner - they were destined for the rose garden. Things have changed. Shari told me that they are highly regarded in her household. Sushi restaurants in orange county charge a good price for them. Same thing with squid. Americans didn't start to eat squid until the late 60's I think.

I love the second one. wow

Baja-Brit - 9-3-2008 at 05:33 AM

Excellent images Ken!

Can I ask what camera set up you used?

Thanks

As you were.

Ken Bondy - 9-3-2008 at 06:31 AM

Thanks Baja-Brit. These two images are pretty old, and back when I was experimenting with equipment. Most likely they were made with a Nikonos V, 15mm lens, one Ikelite 150 strobe, Velvia film ASA 50. I finally settled on a Nikonos RS as my primary underwater camera, with all the RS lenses (13mm, 20-35mm, 28mm, 50mm). Now I am using digital equipment with a Fuji S2 Pro DSLR in a Subal housing, various Nikon lenses (10.5mm, 12-24mm, 60mm, 105mm) with Nikon SB-105 strobes. ++Ken++

Beautiful, I think only you would know they are old because they look great to me.

Natalie Ann - 9-3-2008 at 08:21 AM

Fun and outstanding photos, as always, Ken.

Love the jacks.... but gotta say, if I had a sardina I'd want to keep it clear of those guys.;D:biggrin::dudette:

Ken those pics at Los Islotes evokes great memories of my dives there. it is my favorite place in la paz!

in fact it is in my top 3 dive destinos, those being Cozumel no. 1, Cayman no. 2 and La paz no. 3.

i haven't done the sea mount at la paz so it has to come next.
