Assistance requested from Nomads

pangamadness - 9-4-2008 at 09:55 AM

Help requested from nomads, I am posting this information on behalf of Mr. Jerry Colunga a Orange County Fire Fighter. Mr. Colunga’s son, Paul 11 yoa, drown on Aug 22, 2008 while boogie boarding at a beach in Baja North 1.6 miles north of the entrance to the La Salina harbor. (GPS #s for the location of the rip current. N 32’ 04. 576 W 116’52.885) Rescue attampts were made by the father and a mexican panga but they were unsuccessful. They have been unable to locate the body as of yet. After about 2 weeks the body should become buoyant and float on the surface. It could be pushed to the beach or drift off shore as far as two miles or more. The family would like you to ask boaters, beach goers and pilots who are in the area to keep a sharp eye out with the hope that their son’s body can be retrieved. Also if some one has a boat at El Corral or La Salina and is interested in conducting a search of the area off shore the family would welcome any help. They are currently living in a tent on the beach at that location.

The US Coast Guard is unable to assist but local Mexican authorities are providing as much assistance as they can. The family is searching the beach several times a day. They have a person with an ultra lite plane flying the coast when possible. They have had some boat support but they could use more support in that area.

If you are interested in helping with the search in some way and you need more information you can reach me at webmb@san.rr.com

Was very sorry to read this today. Don't know why it took me this long to write. My Alex is the same age. Don't think I could handle it if .....

I feel very bad for the parents.

What a shame so terribly sad indeed. My god, the sea must have been unusually tumultuous that day. My heart felt sympathy for the family.

My heart aches for this family. Please please please nomads...teach your children(and adult amigos) to be very very careful in the pacific waves. There is a large swell this week and birdog got crushed by one his first day swimming and was lucky not to have been hurt badly. Do not underestimate the force of the sea amigos.
I hope the fellow is found soon for his family's sake.

Very sad story indeed.

One thing I find odd;
I googled this event, the boy's name, the father's name and there is nothing. :?:

I can't begin to imagine the pain this family is going through. I sure hope they find him so that they can mourn his loss.

Jerry is known to me through my work. I live in La Mision on the weekends and ran into Jerry the Sunday after the boy was lost. My wife and I were on my boat in front of the beach at La Salina fishing. He was searching tirelessly all day. It tore my heart out as my wife's son is the same age and plays in the water in the area all the time. Everyone, please keep your eyes open if you are in the water anywhere between La Mision and La Bufadora. The current is strong and south. My wife is a doctor from Ensenada and bodies from the La Mision have shown up as far down as Punta Banda. This is a very sad event and hits very close to home for me. My prayers are with the family.

Today's (9/9/08) Los Angeles Times has a story on page B1 titled "Vigil for drowned boy continues".

Very difficult story as it is so sad. Does anyone know how the fisherman is doing that was injured while making an attempt to assist? I would also like contact information for him if anyone knows how to get in touch with him.

Thanks!
