Flying from Houston to Loreto

bajaumpaw - 9-4-2008 at 08:34 PM

Since Continental has discontinued their flight from Houston to Loreto, has anyone from this area (Houston) figured out a cost efficient way to fly by commercial airlines to Loreto?

capt. mike - 9-5-2008 at 07:21 AM

you're in Houston? why would you want to go to Loreto when you have so many excellent cheap connections to all the great areas of the mainland from Texas?

we used Houston to Yucatan the times we didn't fly ourselves there. great service on continental - are they still around??

CaboRon - 9-5-2008 at 07:32 AM

I don't live in the Houston area ...

It apears as if you will have to connect thru LAX or Mexico City,

it's not cost effective but only two options i know of. Houston to LAX. or Mexico (City) and (just) try to get here from there. the first is expensive, the second, laughably expensive. try for specials to Mexico City, sometimes there are specials from there to La Paz, but then it's bus it or drive it. you could also fly to Phoenix and get AeroMexico from there to Loreto via Hermasillo and/or Guaymas, that leg runs about 650 +/-.

my mother lives in Houston and I have to do the semi-annual visits. was planning to use Continental, so would be very interested in any suggestions/solutions, too.

How about flying to Lindberg Field in San diego. From there it's about a 15 minute drive to the border and another 15 minutes to Tijuana airport.
I remember seeing a recent post on Nomads that Tijuana to Loreto fare was in the $100.00U.S. range.

CaboRon - 9-5-2008 at 07:50 AM

SJD is still served from Houston by Delta, among others

Sounds like it might be cheaper to rent a car at Cabo and drive to Loretto.

I assure you , that a fourteen hour day spent on connecting flights is a real drag.

That is a special on Voloras ...

Purchase your ticket between 9/3 - 9/9 and ...

Fly between 9/1 - 9/30/2008 ...

And the one hundred fare (each way) includes all taxes and departure fees ..... So It Is A Great Fare !!

Here is a link to their web site

I'm coming down to look at some property in the San Lucas Cove area and need to fly into Loreto. Yes, Continental is still around and they still provide a good service for a fair price.

Ron's solution sounds by far the best. Fly to Cabo, rent a car and do an easy drive to Loreto in one day. Around 350 miles.
Usually get decent fares flying into Cabo and you'll have a car at your disposal while here. Going through Lax is a drag, with connecting problems, time consuming, and more expensive by far.
All this, under the assumtion that you'll be able to fly directly from Houston into Cabo.:?::?:

bajaumpaw - 9-5-2008 at 08:17 AM

Thank you for all your replys. I will look into each suggested route. I hope that Continental will someday resume their flights to Loreto. It was nice to be able to fly there for around $500 roundtrip and then rent a car to explore both the central and southern parts of Baja. Thanks again.

According to their website, Volaris doesn't fly to Loreto. Those are La Paz flights.

call me if you want and i can get you there

You might want to check about Houston to Guaymas. Once in Guaymas there is a puddle jumper called Vuelos de Guerro Negro that flies from Guaymas to Santa Rosalia, which would be a lot closer to San Lucas Cove. We live at San Bruno which is just south of San Lucas Ejido and our friends have used this route several times. Telephne number for Guaymas is 011-52-622-221-2800.

rhintransit - 9-5-2008 at 10:44 AM

there is a flight from Guaymas to Loreto, I don't remember the name of the airline but can get it if you wish. the problem/expense is getting to Guaymas from Houston.

of course matching up your flight times could be a challenge. most of the puddle jumpers fly only a few days a week, and on very iffy schedules (my flight Sta Rosalia-Guaymas once was 6 hrs late and I made my connection by 5 minutes, with the captain running me past customs in Guaymas and onto the next flight)

Phil C - 9-5-2008 at 05:03 PM

Try Aero Calafia, Los Cabos to Loreto. The flight is on Sat. and Wed. and departs at 10 am. will probably require an overnight in SJC. Don't know the schedule Hou to Los Cabos....

Did I read something here that I did not understand. Bajaumpaw is trying to get to San Lucas Cove which is 15 miles south of Santa Rosalia, so why would he want to go to Loreto and then back up the peninsula to SR? The flight from Guaymas to Santa Rosalia actually goes 7 days a week now but it is always a good idea to have a concrete reservation.
It may be more economical to go from Houston to Cabo however because of the econ flights that go from Houston or Dallas/Ft. Worth to Cabo and rent a car and drive back up.

oops, no wonder people get mixed up. "that's where...he wanted to go" refers to Loreto. he asked how to get to Loreto from Houston.

bajaumpaw - 9-5-2008 at 09:17 PM

Thanks again for the replys. I did the Houston to Loreto to San Lucas Cove trip about two years ago and back then it was about 2 hours from Houston to Loreto via Continental. I then leisurely, over several days, drove a rental car to the San Lucas Cove area and then back to Loreto for the flight home. Before reading your posts, I assumed this was the best way to get back to that area "via Loreto". That's why I titled my original question "Houston to Loreto". After reading your posts, and no longer being able to fly directly from Houston to Loreto, I see that there are many ways to get to San Lucas Cove with and without going to Loreto. Thank you again for your help. I am looking into all of your suggestions.
