Here we go again.New storm Lowell

whalemeat - 9-7-2008 at 07:11 AM

A new tropical storm has changed its track and is projected to hit Baja later in the week. Hold on to your hats.

[Edited on 9-7-2008 by whalemeat]

BajaWarrior - 9-7-2008 at 07:28 AM

Yep, TS Lowell.

Just saw it on the news. They show it heading north on the west side of Baja and then heading East and making landfall...

That would be " Lowell "

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/index.shtml?epac

At the 4am discussion the National Weather Service now believes Lowell whill shear off to the NNW before reaching Baja California Sur.

Whalemeat,
Welcome to the Forum. We do appreciate a little documentation instead of just "Hold on to your hats" .... sounds like by your use of words that you are not here ... where do you hale from ? Tell us a little about yourself.

Hmmmm...I love it when the forecaster says...there is considerable uncertainty as to where Lowell will go.....yikes...definately one to watch amigos.

Welcome whalemeat and thanks for the little intro...always nice to have an idea of who ya are...ever tasted whalemeat???

vandenberg - 9-7-2008 at 08:26 AM

Computer models show GFDL predicting a turn before Cabo.
They are usually the most accurate and predicted Ike's path correctly for days.

5pm PDT update

Ford - 9-7-2008 at 11:02 PM

I think they turn when they hit a sharp change in water tempature. The warm water often refered to as "fuel" steers it away from cold waters. The NHC is usually pretty close when it comes to predicting these things. They have quite a facility!!
But I guess just a simple hold on to your hat is all you will have to do if you live in one of those bunker houses that the highly acclamied architect is designing in Todo Santos....

joel - 9-7-2008 at 11:26 PM

Looking at the models, there is a high degree of uncertainty about this storm -- much more so than the usual hurricanes, say.

No, they turn due to upper level winds and the relative placement of high and low pressure zones in their proximity.

It looks as if it will hit the coast more than a hundred miles north of Todos Santos and La Paz .....

Overnight it has lightly rained several times and there are the occasional distant lightening strikes.

Good news for some might be bad news for others ....

Woke up at 6am to wind and rain which has absolutely nothing to do with Lowell. Just something that popped up over night. Still raining but very little wind.
Just back from our swim. Water seemed warmer and it was kinda rough getting in and out but we made. Started raining again the minute we got home

Yes! and Yes, dammit! to both quotes.

Its the water, not necessarily the wind, that does damage here. Neither John nor Julio brought "that much" rain to the town of Mulege, but the water that came down out of the mountains was something else again.

We did a quick turn-around trip to La Paz a couple days ago for electrical stuff to fix the house. The roads were sketchy between here and there. Constitution appeared to have been hammered pretty badly, but life was back to normal, just not the roads. The graders were out all along Hwy. 1 working hard to get things safe and better.

We were planning to move back in the house, figuring we could camp there and continue cleaning, but now we're waiting and watching.

It's probably being controlled by HAARP. Maybe some scientist's relative got beat up on in Cabo and he's hammering them. hehehe

It sure is making a weird turn...

bajajudy - 9-8-2008 at 03:23 PM

Weird
We had rain and clouds most of the day. As I said nothing to do with Lowell who isnt even on the maps I look at.
I just gave up and put last night's load of clothes back into the washing machine. They were way past a fresh water rinse and rinse and rinse.

The radar showed a huge area of moisture coming west from the mainland this morning but it hit shear from the storm and was pulled apart to the south.
Later in the day it looked all clear in Mulege.
Looked like many points south of La Paz probably got a shot of rain.

...I sure hope the 'river folks' in Mulege haven't hung up their hip waders yet!

Some folks just can't get a break...maybe it's time to think about moving to higher ground...Paradise seem's to lose a bit if it's luster when you have to shovel out the mud every year or so...

Then there's the attitude related to us by some dear friends on the Mexican' mainland below Mazatlan...where their beach front palapa restaurants are 'attacked' by tropical storms every few years..."That's why we use palm roofs...cheap to replace when the high winds send them into the mountains". They shovel out the sand, clean the tables, replace the roof, and get on with life!

I guess paradise is truly a state of mind...

It looks like there is some rain from the mainland being sucked west by the storm.
Clouds started near La Paz and are heading north towards Mulege within the next hour.
If this proceeds like yesterday, the rain clouds will dissipate by mid-day.

This one may float Perry's boat out of the tree?? Looks like the eye goes right over San Nicolas...

safer is wiser, maybe

Mulegena - 9-9-2008 at 08:24 AM

Hi. We've decided to suspend clean-up and camping in our house for awhile. I'm going to move what I can of my squeeky-clean kitchen up into the attic this morning. The just-refurbished stove and refrigerator are coming out of the house and into town to high ground this afternoon, some of the furniture too, if we can find a covered place.

Looks like the storm will bisect the peninsula through Loreto. I hope my tactics will not be needed and this storm a non-event, but I just don't want to get caught unprepared another time... and in my experience you can never be too prepared.

Right now, Tuesday morning 9:15 a.m., the sun shines with gentle breezes, just a few clouds in the sky... but things happen fast around here.

Baja is a beautiful land, but a harsh land and a place of contrast.

shari - 9-9-2008 at 08:24 AM

big big swell here on the mid pacific coast...just gorgeous smashing on the rocks in front of the house here....the blowhole is NUTS... and things cooled off with an odd NE breeze which is lovely...all the fishing pangas are being beached today....whew..glad we don't have to eat more sashimi today!

I feel for you guys on the gulf side...be safe...take precautions...please let us know with current reports of where the rain is and road conditions.

It is raining here now.

The port of San Lucas was closed yesterday until further notice.

Lowell must be sucking these clouds over us.

Rough seas.

Nothing serious happening. no wind and occasional rain.

My laundry is back in the washing machine waiting to get back on the line. I was sure everyone was wondering about that!

Our garden looks like a jungle. Everything is as green as it gets. Beautiful!

This is a good image and shows that this storm may have a lot of rain in it. You can see the band of clouds going all the way up to Maine.

Surface Sea Temperature

bill erhardt - 9-9-2008 at 03:31 PM

I fished yesterday and the day before in the Pacific outside Mag Bay. The surface sea temperature Sunday peaked at 86 degrees on Thetis Bank and north, and at 87 degrees yesterday. I don't know what effect, if any, this will have on the storm picking up steam before landfall, but I have never before seen surface temperatures so high in that area.

Just got home (around 4pm) and opened the casita up,unpacked the car, grabbed a cool one and sat out side and watched a squall heading towards me from the Mulege. I thought I was in the start of the storm and the casita hadn't even cooled down. Luck was with me and it petered out before it made shore. Fantastic cloud formations though. It feels so GOOD to be home! Sorry no photos today. I've been looking around and getting some info from friends and it appears that this storm may only be a rain event here. Here's a sat enhancement:
Edit: I read this and it sounds like I'm not taking this too serious. Sorry, I don't mean to make "lite" of it. Just wishful thinking.

well believe it or not it is these storms that make Mulege the little Paradise that it is. with out the water you would not want to live there very much. If you don't like shoveling mud every 3 to 5 years then you need to move to higher ground. my guess is if you are shoveling mud then you live right on the river, and if you live right on the river it is because you enjoy living on the river. without these storms there would be no river so you are going to need to change your attitude to one more like Sharksbaja or move up the hill.

LOWELL IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE 1 TO 3 INCHES OF RAINFALL THROUGH THURSDAY ACROSS SOUTHERN BAJA CALIFORNIA. MOISTURE FROM LOWELL COULD SPREAD INTO THE ADJACENT PORTIONS OF THE STATES OF SINALOA AND SONORA IN MAINLAND MEXICO AND PRODUCE 1 TO 3 INCHES OF RAIN DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

Well, so I've been slammed!

Just so you know, Bruce, I do understand the basics of how water makes green; you do not need to educate me on that.
Just so you know I am not one of those south-river people who "sit and listen to Perry Como music" to paraphrase yourself in a diatribe against the south river people after Hurricane John.
I am a hard-working, strong-minded individual who lives here year-round, and as such I am able work with the community to help make it a good place to live.
Where were you after Hurricane John? Did you help with the river clean-up efforts? No. You told me directly when I gave you a flyer to put up on the front of your office, "Oh, the Mexicans won't help with this. Its on Sunday, and that's Family Day." Just so you know, because of course you weren't there, many good folks- vacationistas, Nationals and non-national legal residents did come together for that.

Bruce, you are so out of line here.

I am posting on this board with fact about this situation here, because people sincerely want to know. I don't have time to get into a slinging match with you. I have a life to lead here in Mulege.

Bruce R Leech - 9-10-2008 at 08:10 AM

you are out of line here Mulegena read my post I did not slam you. I am only saying that you need to take on the attitude of Sharksbaja and some of the others if you are going to have a house in the flood zone. as for where I was after John do a search on the forum and you will see. and as for what I told you when I did hang you flayer up on My business I only suggested to you that if you made your cleanup day one any day but Sunday you would be able to get more help. as for where was I? I was up the river helping the local Mexicans get their lives back together instead of begging them to come down and help clean up the river in front of the Americans houses.

I am sorry you are so bitter about this subject I am sure you are tired of cleaning up and I am sorry that you need to do it again but you have a choice and you chose to live with the river and that is fine lots of my friends do also. it will flood again maybe soon or could be 3 years but it is normal.

Well, I have not been posting here because of "attitudes"; that is, rude posters and my attitude against them. Mine is bad enough to keep me out of here. I often bite my tongue (and fingers) and then refrain from posting.

However, I am jumping in here to defend against the same attitudes that I saw here just after Julio.

Mulegena's attitude was NOT bad nor "b*tchy! She was responding with HUMOR! If you don't get it, get out. She is in the midst of a bad situation and is fighting it with HUMOR!.

Stop chiding the Mulege River people. Their attitudes are absolutely wonderful. They are doing what is necessary, and the helping attitudes and the offers of help to others are going way beyond what is normally required. They are literally up to their eyeballs in their own messes, yet they go way beyond "me me me". They get beyond the self and extend themselves lovingly to others.

The river dwellers, and I am one of them, bought or built before catastrophic flooding became a frequent event. They can't walk away from their houses. They can't move them to another location. They can't raise them and put them on stilts. and most of them can't afford to buy another dwelling on higher ground.
So Butt out!

You do what you HAVE to do. Given the malicious remarks that have been posted, I doubt whether any of you could meet the challenges we are meeting successfully. With your dark minds and rude remarks, you don't have what it takes. You are projecting your "attitudes" on these wonderful people. I'm glad you aren't included as neighbors.

I'm going into the swamp to get me some "Bada$$ Mulege B*tch's Brew" and then I' goin' ta come down on y'all. Now BACK OFF, ya hear?.....or I'll get my Mojo workin'. I know what some of you look like, and the dolls that I am sticking pins in look like you. You don't think there is power in that? Look out!

:o:wow:

With love for my river dwelling family,

Tony
The Orchard

Atta Boy, Tony....the river dwellers here in Mulege indeed are a different breed of cat...they cover each others backs and take care of people. Yeah, we gotta muck it out once in awhile but until you spend time with these folks you don't know who you're dealing with...I have NEVER met a more giving, hard working, sacrificing group of folks in my 60+ years...and I've been around..got some miles on me...lovin' it in Mulege..ON the river

I like the brew Haha question. After reading The Voodoo threat I came up with .... Sticking Pins Pilsner.

I wish you folks all the luck. I will be bringing a load of clothes and some toys to Father Dan this October. I hope he is still there. i brought a bunch 2 years ago after the last storm worked the area.

By the way this is my first Nomad response although I have been reading it for years.

1:00 pm, Los Cabos

Overcast all morning with intermittent showers. Winds from the SSE about 20 mph. This is not Lowell. It appears Lowell is sucking in moisture from the mainland. Absolutely no problems at my location. Ooops, another squall just hit, should be over in 10 or 15 minutes. Dont have the AC on today, temperature is very pleasant.

Suerte, everyone.

bajajudy - 9-10-2008 at 01:12 PM

Hey Danguy....welcome
Keep up the good work. Sounds like you know what to do when you come to Baja
I also like your sense of humor. we could do with more of that!

It is pouring here right now with a bit of wind...maybe gusts of 10mph. It has been dark most of the day. I know that the tourists hate this but I love dark cloudy rainy days. I think that I will make a pot of soup.

We were just discussing that normally a tropical depression taking this route would give us very little rain but as oxxo mentioned this is not Lowell.

Everyone take care!

I hear ya Judy! We're making chili beans and garlic toast for supper. Yes it is one of those days. A nice change of pace from the summer heat. But I hope everyone else stays dry too.

Bruce R Leech - 9-10-2008 at 02:15 PM

I love the rain. some of the most memorable moments I have in Mulege are at the times of rain. the local Mexican people love it also they know what it means to them. they all get out and run through the streets when it starts to rain even if it is 3 in the morning. :tumble:

I hope everyone gets just the right amount of rain and no flooding

I hope I don't get slammed again for liking rain:(

Todos Santos 19:00 hrs Wednesday

Lowell's edge tickling Todos Santos on its way northeast. Intermittent rain and gusts of wind all day, now intensifying as it approaches landfall. Sky is dark and all is ready for a good bath.

Hello all!
I received an email at 8 AM from downtown Mulege. The river did not flood and everything is up and running.

Today is sunny. Lowell has passed. Whew!

I sincerely hope that our neighbors further south didn't get hammered too much. Let us know how things are in your hood.

Best to all,
Tony

bajajudy - 9-11-2008 at 09:22 AM

Rain and some wind through the night
Very dark skies to the north but no rain so far this morning and no wind
I would guessimate that we had about 2" maybe more.
Road to San Jose open although I am sure that it is rough. Havent actually made the trip myself
All in all, Lowell has been a welcomed relief from the heat.

Brianinloreto - 9-11-2008 at 09:29 AM

Thanks to all for the update. Glad to hear that Mulege dodged the storm.

CaboRon - 9-12-2008 at 08:07 AM

Lowell has moved on and is now in Texas ...

Here is a quote from Yahoo News this morning ...

" Texans were getting hit from both sides, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Lowell, a Pacific system, dumped nearly 8 inches of rain on Lubbock in 24 hours, flooding homes and roads "

Skeet/Loreto - 9-12-2008 at 12:06 PM

Hey, It all sounds like the coming spring will be excellent in Baja Sur. Hopi I can make it down and happy that you nomads all seem to be safe (alive)...what are possessions but things that own you. My best thoughts for you and your places.
