Yes, our Viva Baja events and BBBB, El Rosario Festival & Matomi Baja camping trips have been fun, for sure! The Book Signing at the Pyramid Resort late April/ early May are great annual events. Here are links to photos I have from many of the Nomad and Amigo group get-togethers...

For the new Nomads, a look at our get-togethers/ personal meeting parties... see what some of us behind the keyboard look like!:

Oh man...what a trip down memory lane for the Viva Baja's. It was so sad to see a pic of three amigos together that are no longer with us...Diklang, Mike H. & Jens. Also Dave in 29 Palms.

The parties....on this side of the border, were loads of fun!

Except for that fight over Neal :fire: ;)

Diver, I think that showing all of us having fun together is a good thing... and you can't have too much fun, can you?

Anyway, they are links so click on them as you please... If I actually posted all the hundreds of photos on Nomad then I would say yes, overkill!

Some of the Nomads here today who were around for those first get-together days include Baja Ken (Ken Cooke), Neal Johns, jeans, Whistler, Jay (Taco Felix), Paulina, Graham, BajaNomad, Amo Pescar, egl, Porky Pig, el jefe, el camote, Marla, Bedman, Elena La Loca (LN), La Tijereta (BajaHwy), Debra (travelpearl), Desert Bull, 4baja, Hotschott, and more!!!

Thanks, I will definitely want to attend this 4WD trip!! :bounce:

Neal Johns - 9-14-2008 at 03:39 PM

Come on, DK, do your thing! Another get together of some kind, please.

Bajaboy - 9-14-2008 at 04:24 PM

DK-Let's do a Bola/Playa San Rafael party for Spring Break. Pancho would love the company and there's plenty to do nearby.

Zac

David K - 9-14-2008 at 05:56 PM

Sounds good... there still is a lost mission-era site near there I need to find!

From Choral Pepper/ Desert Magazine July, 1966...

Photos taken by the Erle Stanley Gardner expedition which opened the road between Bahia de los Angeles and Rancho El Barril in early 1966. The rock ruins were discoverd while doing some exploring out from their camp along the route. This was the day after they visited Bahia las Animas and before reaching El Barril/ San Francisquito.

The 1757 Jesuit Map shows a 'mission' called Santa Maria Magdalena as being 'started' north of Dolores del Norte (the early name for Santa Gertrudis) and south of Bahia de los Angeles. Choral Pepper believed they found the site of this unfinished / abandoned mission project...

Circled are the sites of Santa Maria Magdalena (labled: SMM), Dolores del Norte (DDN) which is Santa Gertrudis today, San Ignacio (SI), Guadalupe (G), and Santa Rosalia de Mulege (SRM), as well as another lost mission site near Punta Abreojos in the Santa Clara mountains: San Juan Bautista (SJB).

I second that. Neal's getting old, and I'm getting older. We need another Baja David K convention!:!:

Bajaboy - 9-14-2008 at 06:54 PM

DK-I'll throw it out there...4/4-4/12/2009....Playa San Rafael/Bola or Mallarimo/Asuncion although it's a bit cold and windy there that time of year.

Zac

TMW - 9-15-2008 at 07:13 AM

If there are any big rocks to climb over make sure Ken brings some of his jeep buddies. They're a hoot to follow. Never knew a jeep could crawl over such big rocks.

BAJACAT - 9-15-2008 at 09:30 PM

I second that idea, but if is plan for Presidents day. On March I have my Baja sur trip...

4/4 to 4/12... San Rafael beach camping trip with side trip inland to search for lost mission ruins... Okay!:light:

How many palapas have you and Pancho built on the beach so far?

Will this be your baby's first Baja trip?

What would you like to do on President's Day Jose? Hike the Camino Real from Gonzaga to Mision Santa Maria perhaps? http://vivabaja.com/1103/page2.html

Base camp at Beluga?

Or, another Matomi Canyon run... or other eastside canyons to explore: Parral, Berrendo, Carrizo, Agua Caliente, El Cajon?: http://vivabaja.com/404 and http://vivabaja.com/106/page3.html for more of Berrendo Canyon

Or, something more exotic? The Pole Line Road perhaps?

There are two big palapas on the beach but room for plenty. As for a first camping trip to Baja....well, we're taking our son, Gabriel, to Asuncion in November for 2-3 weeks but not if we'll camp or not. But he'll have camped by then...we might do a few night in Anza Borrego soon.

El Berrendo, El Parral sounds good I never been there, or maybe Matomi again, that was a nice trip..

David K - 9-16-2008 at 04:52 PM

Okay Zac... We won't know about having that week in April off until late Jan. or Feb. when Elizabeth can put in her vacation requests for the next year. Is that Easter/ Semana Santa week by chance?

As for Borrego, if you want company, I am anxious to do some night runs now that I have these HIDs on my Tacoma!

fishbuck - 9-16-2008 at 05:01 PM

Okay that's it. I need to get a 4x4 by this trip. It won't be pretty but I hope reliable:lol:

They are all cool... Parral sometimes has a closed, locked gate many miles before the road ends/ trail begins. We were lucky in 2004. Met BajaLou that trip and Mexitron, Taco de Baja, too

Berrendo is nice... went back with Elizabeth in 2006. About a mile hike to the grotto.

Carrizo has a fence that blocked us in 2004, and no big palms to be seen from that point... So, Jide and I left without hiking in Carrizo to go to Agua Caliente to set up camp.

Agua Caliente was great, but a mile hike from the road end to the hot spring. Since then (2004), we heard that the canyon entrance was fenced off (last Feb.) but they were trying to develop the hot spring by extending the road all the way in and building palapas...?

El Cajon was a beautiful hike in... Burro Bob lives (was living) at the entrance... Anyone hear from him, Lou???

You have the plane for fast Baja trips and then you will have the 4X4 for getting down and dirty!

Thanks Paulina... So that IS the first week of Semana Santa/ Spring Break... which means mobs of people in the popular places.

Bahia San Rafael should be a safe destination, but who knows? As long as there is no blairing music until sunrise, bottles and diapers littering the beach and the other typical Semana Santa stuff, it would be nice...

Amigos sitting around the campfire sharing stories and laughs is what I like for group camping... We had many of those at Camp Gecko and The Matomi and BBBB campouts.

Here's some Baja Nomads chatting outside the Baja Cactus Motel in 2006...

I'm just hanging back to see what is decided...Day trip to Gonzaga Bay?

Aren't there other locations with pools/waterfalls like Canon Diablo or area?

BajaLou?

David K - 9-18-2008 at 08:56 PM

Chuck, lots of canyons in Baja have water, palms, beauty! The one I showed above is the closest to your place... just go west...

Bajaboy - 9-18-2008 at 09:00 PM

DK-

I've been to Playa San Rafael for a few Semana Santas and with no other people outside of us....well, there was a couple camped close to us last year but El Gato Loco and Barb are harmless. We'll probably head there again this year..at least for a few days. It would be nice to share the place with other Nomads.

Debra,

I can feel for you. NJ was on the other side of the earth as far as I was concerned. You'll be back in Bahia before you know it.

Been to that waterfall, small, but a waterfall...They were using a Backhoe out there at that time we were there ('04) and blazing a trail up the stream, anyone know what they were developing?

Sounds like a great trip, unfortunately our Son is off the previous week for Easter break so that dictates our time off and why I'm pushing for a Presidents trip.

That looks like a beautiful beach...

Hey David K,
and a warning to anyone else rolling through California.

It is illegal drive with a gps affixed to a windshield in California. It has to mount on the dash.

Don't give the cops a reason to pull you over.

Carry on! :)

Interesting on how my street pilot GPS, sold in Calif. comes with a windshield mount, and every car I see with one is usually mounted to the windshield... sometines in the middle! Mine is as low as possible so as not to obstruct my view.

Not sure what a windshield mounted GPS has to do with this thread? In Baja, I use a hand held Garmin eTrex Legend to navigate or mark waypoints, not the street pilot.

Hey Camote-

Wish we could join you but we'll be at our place in Asuncion at that time. Maybe we could do it another time.

I would love to hike the Camino Real to Mision Santa Maria... and make it all the way this time! Chris and I ran short of daylight in Nov. 2003... It was a really great experience hiking on a trail built over 200 years ago! http://vivabaja.com/1103/
