TripleG - 9-13-2008 at 04:01 PM

I'm in the San Jose/Cabo area and need to know if Roundup or some form thereof is available? Been told that no "killer anything" is down here??:?:

BirdDog - 9-13-2008 at 04:18 PM

Use a hoe!!

Mucho weeds grass

TripleG - 9-13-2008 at 06:06 PM

Lots of broadleaf and grassy weeds after all the nice rain last week and storm before, coarse sand doesn't hoe very well.

I take it no one knows as to the replys?

Judy, Cabo Ron?

Here is a good organic mix; use higher concentration vinegar if you can find it.

Weed Killer Mix 1 gallon white vinegar, 1 cup table salt, and 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid together and spray on weeds. To do so, remove approximately 2 cups of vinegar from the jug, pour in the salt and dishwashing liquid, then return the 2 cups of vinegar to the jug. Close the lid and shake to mix. Transfer to a spray bottle (after shaking to mix the ingredients) as needed. It works as well, if not better, than Chemicals, but is much cheaper. Be careful, it will kill whatever you spray it on! If you go purchase vinegar, 10% acidity, 20% acid would be better, and spray it on the weeds in the heat of the full sun, you will have an effective weed killer.

They sell paraquat up here. That's Agent Orange, I think. All you have to do is walk into your yard and mention the word and weeds start to wilt and die.

CaboRon - 9-13-2008 at 06:59 PM

I have been looking for "Round-Up" with no luck,

Have been unable to keep up with the weeding,

So, I have resorted to hoeing and raking, it is a lot of work.

The problem is two fold ..... the yard wasn't prepared properly .... with a layer of plastic under the gravel ... and the gravel and sand deliveries have a very high organic component ......

A little rain, and everything grows like crazy.

Saw my next door neighbor useing a horse drawn plow to just plow everything under ....

If anyone has seen Round-Up or similer Weed be gone product ..... well then, please post that information.

Suppose I shouldn't feel too bad as the yard directly across the driveway from me has green weeds over three feet tall !!

The answer to your question is yes, there are similar products to Round Up. I get my weed killer through Pro Agro in La Paz. I don't have the name of the stuff I buy down there as I am in the States right now, but have had my best luck taking the chemical name of what I am looking for and they will know what you want. Try asking for Glyphosate, the higher the % the better.

Bomberro - 9-14-2008 at 04:38 AM

The brand name is 'Coloso - extra', its a Herbicida agricola. Be careful as all the items sold at Pro Agro are industrial strength for large ranches. This product is 34%!!! I use about 3 oz per 2 gallon sprayer. Good luck and try not to kill good plants, diesel works well also and then use a weed burner a couple of weeks later....

mulegemichael - 9-14-2008 at 07:08 AM

vinegar is the best!...use it straight out of the bottle and it will kill anything it touches...apply during the heat of the day...it's cheap!!

Paraquat

Thanks. My neighbor says instant lukemia. I do try to be careful with it when spraying. Never in the wind. It will kill anything it touches. It makes short order of weeds that pop up in the rock ground cover.
If anybody's interested, they sell it in Maneadero for about 10 bucks per liter, highly concentrated. That's a lot of dead weeds.

Agent Orange!!

TripleG - 9-14-2008 at 12:26 PM

Thanks for the replys guys. Have been a farmer or in chemical sales until retirement. Sold lots of Paraquat and used lots of it myself. It may appear to have some of the characteristics of AO, but a long ways from. It is used in many ways, and at low rates is used over certain crops as a weeding agent, with minamal harm to crop. I saw the effects first hand of AO in VN. Not as good as Round UP!!, Round Up is dead when it hits "dirt".

I like Divers's formula, and will try if I can't obtain commercial product.

Cabo Ron, there is some commercial farming there in Todo Santos possibley could get RU there. Maybe an Pro Agro outlet there?

Yeah, it sure did, Ron. Nobody [at least I think nobody] knew then so they just got bathed in it. I'm not doing that.

Agent Orange was actually a mix of two chemicals, one being 2,4-D, a common broad-leaf herbicide. Paraquat is not related and is still a common herbicide used to kill aquatic weeds.
