Best restaurant and entertainment near the Pyrimid Resort?

fishbuck - 9-16-2008 at 10:39 AM

I'll be staying at the Pyrimid this Friday night and would like to go out for dinner and some music. Any ideas?
Must be in taxicab range. I might sip a margarita or 2. :)

DENNIS - 9-16-2008 at 11:12 AM

La Fonda. There are others in the vicinity as well.

Ask Miss Keri, Mike. She'll send you in the right direction.

I know there is a place that has live music in Cantamar to the north. I can't think of the name though.....but it is a bit farther away than La Fonda.

Las Palmillas? Something like that, Geoff?

capt. mike - 9-16-2008 at 12:53 PM

mike i always liked the Calafia for the view and cheap happy hour. but it has been panned here.
i'd go back. their cheezy dip with fried chorizo in it is scrumptious.

elgatoloco - 9-16-2008 at 01:09 PM

La Palapa de Jose at K58 just north of La Fonda is an option. Sometimes they have live music.

La Fonda ALWAYS has live music and the setting is very romantical. It was thirteen years ago today (Mexican Independence Day) that I had the first date (second time around) with the woman who became my wife. We ate and danced at La Fonda and then ended up at Tijuana Tilly's after midnight for more before we crossed north.
Too much fun!

jodiego - 9-16-2008 at 01:12 PM

I would highly recommend La Fonda. Good food, live music, and a short distance from the Pyramids. La Mision next door might have a small band playing too. That's where I learned the Macarena.

Sallysouth - 9-16-2008 at 01:23 PM

Geoff, The restaurant you were referring to is called "The Palms" The food is good, as are the drinks and they do have live music.I'd go to La Fonda if it were my choice tho. I have never had a bad meal there and the service is quite good now. Also as Crazy Cat said, muy romantico!!

BajaGeoff - 9-16-2008 at 02:00 PM

That's the one! My mental hard drive briefly crashed and I could not remember the name!

Thanks everyone for directing him to La Fonda

Keri - 9-16-2008 at 02:44 PM

That's where I'll send him.The ambiance is nice and the food delish. La Mision and La Palapa also have live music and you can walk from one to the other and pick which one you like best. PS, Mike, if you want a romantic evening don't forget a duraflame type log for your fireplace;D,k

I live within walking distance of La Fonda and wouldn't go there even if you were buying. The Palm is OK but the prices are outrageous. My recommendation is Bahia Cantiles. Food is good, resonable prices and good music.

If you want to go into Rosarito, (a local taxi is about 2 bucks) then my choice would either be Suzanna's or Chabert's. Pricey but excellent food.

I hate even the suggestion but for one night only the combo of Miguel de Hoyos / Alex DePue at Jose's Palapa can be kinda interesting...Unless you're a musician. ;D

WARNING: Go back a second night and you'll hear the exactly the same tunes.

Dave, it is good to see you on Nomad again by-the-way...

Where would you recommend for good dinner in that area (no music, just nice views and good food)... Our usual favorite in Chef Johnny at the Half Way House... but the last two times we went there to eat is was closed (once for a wedding in May, and last Sept. 2, Tuesday... the whole place was closed)... We ended up at Puerto Nuevo (our favorite there Chela's was also closed)... I know there is better, right?

Dave,

Could you elaborate a bit on what's wrong with La Fonda? I've been there a few times and liked it. But I'm just a "tourist" so don't really know what's good there.
Please explain.

Wrong. I was there on a Tuesday in the mid sixties and had a great time.
Where were you that day?

The sign said will reopen in October at Halfway House... I asked Dave for a recommendation in that area for another place that has good food, good views, etc. Do you have a recommendation? How about you Dennis, anyone else?

For me, it's "who cares." If people here are looking for Baja History on a contemporary scale, they should look no farther than Dimitri who owned and operated La Fonda for so many years. A gentleman of classic standards. If you didn't have the pleasure of meeting the man in his restaurant, it's your loss.

OK, but Dmitri is gone. Granted the place has made a major overhaul, but my recent experiences have been nothing but good. Are there any specific areas of the place that you dislike or is this just a Dmitri thing?

Dmitri....Is that how his name is spelled? Thanks. I've heard he's still around. Didn't he have a ranch over in Guadalupe Valley?

I'm still waiting for Dave to tell us what it is about La Fonda that he doesn't like. Yes, Dmitri had a ranch where he raised his own sheep, beef, and pork. He sold the place and I don't know if he's still around. The place has certainly become much more "kitchy" (restaurant & room upgrades, spa, no pets, more expensive), but I still enjoy visiting.

Why We Don’t Go to La Fonda Anymore

Gypsy Jan - 9-17-2008 at 03:26 PM

We have been customers of La Fonda for over twenty-five years, and for six years, after we moved to Baja as our main home, we were regulars at Sunday brunch and it was our first choice for a place to take visitors for a meal and a view.

When Joe Dmytri sold the business to the Las Vegas group, everything changed, except the rooster and hen wandering the patios.

The Good:

1. The new owners dramatically upgraded the infrastructure; they replaced the antiquated, very old kitchen with a stainless steel refit with a fire prevention system (I hope).

2. They greatly expanded the dining room and patio to take full advantage of the world class ocean views.

3. They remodeled/upgraded the accommodations (not that I know this first hand)

The Bad:

1. Their total indifference to the ideas/opinions/service to their local customer base (i.e., living in Baja year-round, the customers who can keep you alive during the off season). If you want to know where many locals go now, it’s to Ruben’s Bar and Grill at Las Gaviotas. I can’t count how many people have come up to me during Sunday brunch at Ruben's, saying, “I recognize you from seeing you at La Fonda; I stopped going there because the food got so awful.”

2. The last few times we had dinner there (here’s how the conversation went, “Well, we liked it so much in the past, maybe things have improved.” Well, our dinner was terrible and when we complained, the staff/management just shrugged.

3. Most important of all, is the terrible hygiene practices regarding the food handling standards for the buffet(s). They put out huge amounts of food in giant pots and let it stand without replacement. As of the last time we were there, no sneeze guards protected the food. We have directly witnessed people picking food out of the serving containers, tasting it and putting back into the pot. One local couple who are friends of ours went back to brunch there a couple of months ago for the same reason we did, fond memories of the past, and they were sick for days afterward.

So, if you go, my recommendation is to go for a drink (alcoholic, it kills the germs) and a world class ocean view, especially at sunset.

YIKES!!! That's very useful information. Thank you.

bajabass - 9-18-2008 at 11:47 AM

With the decline of La Fonda it has become hard to get a fine dining experience in La Mision. My first date with my now wife was there, but followed by several disappointments after. The Palms is good, but to pricey for the food. Cantilles is fair, but no view except for Virgins next door!! The Halfway house is good, but watch your car. The food at Cantina La Salina is fair bar food, but you can't beat the beach access and very colorful, unique locals,. Friday Happy Hour brings a lot of the local scoundrels, including myself, out to play. I know it is far, but El Olivio, next to UABC in Ensenada is great. View, food, ambiance, all excellent!!!

Same Ocean...Same view

But don't eat there, either. ;D

I never associate a salad of iceberg lettuce, beets and watered-down ranch dressing with fine dining.

I went to la Fonda 'cause I liked and respected Joe. The food was always, at best, underwhelming.

woody with a view - 9-18-2008 at 12:09 PM

the view from the balcony after a morning surf is worth the price of the machaca or huevos rancheros.......and the food isn't bad.

bajabass - 9-18-2008 at 02:31 PM

The salad was poor, but the ribs and the quail USED to be great! Had a couple good fish dinners as well. Alas, NO MAS !!

I don't quite know how. Medio Camino is most always open, though. I'm at the bar frequently. ;D

The few places I go I know what to order:

Pizza done extra crispy at Bobby's.

Fried chicken Thursday, sea bass Friday, and ribs Sunday at Bahia Cantiles.

Carne Asada at Jose's Palapa...but only if chef Lupe is there.

Albondigas soup at Magana's. Paolas has good Mexican food.

And on and on ....

Trick is to know what to order where...and when.

Problem is that there isn't one place that has consistantly good food. Most places don't.At least between Rosarito and Ensenada.

Great places in TJ and Ensenada, though.

fishbuck - 9-18-2008 at 03:59 PM

Okay, so where is the right palce to go. It needs to have

1) Decent food
2) Good drinks
3) Nice view
4) Live music
5) Fair prices
6) Taxi cab range to the Pyrimid.

It doesn't need to be perfect. It just can't be awful or make us sick. I mean, is La Fonda really that bad?

And:

If you don't take a private cab, you can go to Rosarito for 2 bucks per person...Suzanna's, Chabert's, That's Amore, (great Italian!).

Okay Dave, thanks for trying... I am looking for a nice dinner restaurant in that area (traditional, Mexican, sea food, steaks, etc.). We like Chef Johnny's cooking and would like a 'back up' for when the Half Way House is closed.

Paradas continuas means continual/frequent stops.

I call them collective taxis. Don't know what the proper name is. They run up and back down the free road and stop if you raise your hand. From la Mision to Primo Tapia is 8 pesos. Change taxis then to Rosarito is 12 pesos more. A private taxi to would cost $20 +.

Don't eat the brunch? :smug: Why would anyone eat brunch in Baja? ;) Have fun drinking, dancing :dudette: and dining and try to get there just before sunset, it's at 6:45 PM tomorrow mas or menos. Call the tequila, Don Julio, in your maggies so you dont get grain alcohol :barf: , look waiter in the eyes when you tell him that you want your steak medium rare and send it back if it's not , ask for the salad dressing on the side so you can see the shape the lettuce is in , don't sit RIGHT next to the dance floor or you may have a drunk gringa trip and land in your lap :wow: and most importantly, tip the tortilla lady on the way out!

Oh and we will expect a report, if you survive! Let us know what you think? :)

If you need help making bail call me I will be just up the road a couple clicks.

6) Taxi cab range to the Pyrimid.

It doesn't need to be perfect. It just can't be awful or make us sick. I mean, is La Fonda really that bad?

I'd go to Poco Cielo for sunset drinks. Then Medio Camino for dinner. Sit on the patio...great views. Back to Jose's Palapa for music.

Okay, I like this plan. Some variety. Anybody got a recommendation on what's good at the Halfway House? DavidK I think you've been there a few times.

Johnny does a filet mignon with either a ceaser sauce an avocado sauce and another I can't recall. My wife always orders all three. Eat at the bar so you can chat up the bartender and maybe watch some futbol or boxing. We like the seats down at the end toward the ocean. Let us know.

Okay, I'm back. Here's a little report.
First of the Pyrimid is really nice and I'm glad I finally got a chance to stay there.
Keri and Mike are super nice. Plus we had the place virtually to ourselves. Very beautiful and peaceful.
Stopped at Bahia Cantiles on the way in. Not a good place to take a date. Basically a dive bar with a dining room. Fair food and drinks at best. Moved on pretty quick.
Decided to just do the La Fonda thing on this trip. Went ot Poco Cielo for the sunset. Nice little place. Very cozy and romantic. Nice patio. Fair drinks and food at best.
Went next door to La Fonda for dinner and music. I hadn't been there since it was remodeled. Very comfortable and a nice staff. I had a steak and it was good. A little expensive. I live next to Outback and I think it's even a little cheaper and better food.
But we liked it and had fun. They had a little three piece band that was fair at best but entertaining.
We were tired so didn't stay late.
Back to the Pirimid and walked the grounds and enjoyed the nightime view and ocean sounds.
Walked to La Fonda in the morning for breakfest. Decent breakfest on the patio and beautiful view. I didn't want to leave.
A cab is $10 to the Pyrimid and never saw a colective taxi so walked back. Walking on the road is a little unsafe and it wasn't possible to walk on the beach at high tide.
We walked part of the way on the road and cut through the Plaza Del Mar housing developement. The road cut there comes out right on the cliff front trail to the Pyrimid.
Not sure if that will be an option with the developement is finished.
Next time we will drive to La Fonda and walk on the beach there which is long and flat.
Overall we had a great time and I would love to have spent a few more days there.
I love the Pyrimid! And the La Fonda area was interesting enough for a few days worth of playing and exploring.
Bring plenty of cash because only La Fonda excepts credit cards and there is no ATM in the area.
Have fun!

Thanks, Mike. Glad to hear you have no horror stories.

Thanks DENNIS!

No horror stories but there was one wierd little incident.
There were 2 tough looking lesbians at La Fonda. When we were leaving they sort of block our way and one made a gesture toward my girl. I shielded her and pushed past them.
They followed us out and were eyeing me menacingly. I quickly put my girl in my truck but I must say I was watching my back as they were lingering nearby.
Nothing happened but I wasn't sure for a minute or two.
Wierd man!
