2 questions: Pila filters and controlling sand

Santiago - 9-19-2008 at 02:55 PM

1. Tinaco and filter is about a year old, maybe has had about 3000 liters through it. What exactly does the filter filter (heh, Roger Roger, Roger)? How long do they last?
2. The little screen filter that comes with the Shurflow pumps always gets crudded up with green sh*t - dawned on me that it's the only thing that light is getting to. Also there is about 12" of clear hose on each side of the pump so I'm thinking go black hose and wrap a rag around the filter?
3. I'm getting tired of sweeping sand off the floor. A lot. You guys that live on the beach, how do you controll it?

Hire somebody else to do that. Arn't you retired?

Paulina - 9-19-2008 at 03:12 PM

Build a wall around your place. Fill the space between the wall and your house with gravel, then place a tub of water at the edge so people have to rinse off their feet before coming in.

I don't know. I think it's a loosing battle.

I can't - I was way, way into mortgage-backed securities, geared 33 to 1. In some cases 33 to 1 ON TOP of 33 to 1. Never did know if that was 66 to 1 or 33 squared to 1. Doesn't much matter now. Looks like the gov'ment might buy them. No problemo, I've been practicing "Would you like fries with that?"

Focus Santiago! Your on BajaNomad! We're talking about water storage and pumps and sh*t.

The only problem with the tub would be now it's wet sand to sweep up!

We just deal with it, and sweep it, carpets remnants inside and out of both front and back doors help, plus when the weather turns cold its less beach time...

Bob and Susan - 9-19-2008 at 03:38 PM

man...i must be missing EVERYTHING today...

i thought the "floor" was the bottom og the tank:?:

all he needs is a "whole house" filter $25usa at home depot

maybe that would keep the sand off the floor too:lol:

I stopped using that little filter, its just too fine for well water...I'm using Shurflos also and they last usually about 5 years without a filter, but always keep one extra on hand.

As far as the clear hoses, they're a good idea, that way you know when your water is on the warm side and needs some bleach. We pour it in the water truck tank (about a cup per every 300 gallons) and it mixes well inside our tank. You should still mix a minimul amount even during the winter.

Don't run the water (pump) at your house within 10 minutes after delivery, it gives the sand a chance to settle to the bottom.

Get some really nice brooms for the last issure, you live at the beach! That isn't the worst of your problems is it?

bajabound2005 - 9-19-2008 at 06:05 PM

we have a whole house filter (5 micron) for the pila water and add about a cup of bleach to each pila load (2500-3000 gallons) which will last us 4-6 weeks. The bleach is a new addition and it does WONDERS! The water smells better and feels better. So my hair is little blonder.... At this time of year the water tends to be on the salty side. We change the filter every 3 months - and it's pretty yucky (not green, but lots of salt and calcium) when it come out!

One cup for 2500 gallons is so diluted I hardly think it would make a difference for anything. I'll rethink that if I see your hair falling out in gobs at the fishfry tomorrow.

DENNIS - 9-19-2008 at 07:22 PM

Sooo....Let's see.......That would be equivlant to 20,000 drops for a pila with 2500 gallons. Is that more or less than an 8 oz. cup?

BajaGringo - 9-19-2008 at 07:29 PM

I remember back in my laboratory days that something like 5 mg/L residual chlorine (parts per million equivalent) was considered an irritant in drinking water so you can do the math...

I have to go find my slide-rule and abacus.

BajaGringo - 9-19-2008 at 07:37 PM

Don't laugh but I used a slide rule back in school and still have it!

actually, i can't!!!!:lol::lol::lol:

BajaGringo - 9-19-2008 at 07:47 PM

You can do a rough calculation just assuming similar densities by using parts equivalent. In other words to target a residual chlorine level less than 5 ppm (1-2 would be best) we can use the following example:

10,000 gallon pila = 37, 850 liters divided by a million = 0.03785 liters

0.03785 liters = 38 mL = 38 cc Chlorine to achieve 1 ppm dosage in 10k gallons

76 cc would give you a theoretical dose of 2 ppm chlorine.

Some chlorine will be consumed by reaction but that is a good way to "ballpark it".

DENNIS - 9-19-2008 at 07:50 PM

Oh sure. Who didn't know that?

BajaGringo - 9-19-2008 at 07:51 PM

I take it you were passing notes back during chemistry...

:lol::lol::lol:

dtbushpilot - 9-19-2008 at 07:57 PM

Maybe YOU can do the math but I can't......can I Google something to get the answer?....dt

woody with a view - 9-19-2008 at 07:57 PM

thanks Gringo

i should sleep soundly tonight knowing what i now know...

Well, let's see. The fish fry was last month so you won't see my hair falling out then...but if you show up at the PICNIC tomorrow (or next week at La Sociedad on Wednesday) you study my hair up close and personal....

bajaguy - 9-19-2008 at 08:44 PM

Santiago....for you floors, we use these.....

Sweeping http://www.irobot.com/sp.cfm?pageid=122

Scrubbing http://www.irobot.com/sp.cfm?pageid=128

both work great on tile or hard surface flooring

Often on sale at woot.com

Hey - WTF happened to my thread? I want to know how to keep the damn sand outa my front porch and the best thing I have so far is to install carpet on the OUTSIDE of my cabin????? All of a sudden I'm back in chemistry class sliding the bones? I'm pretty darn sure that Osprey does not sweep out his patio 10 times a day. Come on - what's the secret?

Santiago - 9-19-2008 at 08:55 PM

OOPS - sorry Bajaguy - crossed post. Thanks

Sand = SiO2 = Silicon Dioxide

Can be dissolved with HF = Hydroflouric Acid

Might cause some "secondary" problems however.

Used to go there ALL the time when in college!

Now, back to the originally posted question...maybe you need some sort of wind block to keep the sand out?

BajaGringo - 9-20-2008 at 07:32 AM

We use some like these...

How to keep out dust/sand/bugs

rob - 9-20-2008 at 08:59 AM

We use what Paulina suggets - a foot bucket that cleans sandals and feet in one plunge - just one problem: bees.

At the driest time of the year (before the first september storm), bees here are desperate for water - their scouts spot the bucket, and within 15 minutes, the bar is packed.

Moving the bucket totally confuses them - for 15 minutes . . .

Paulina - 9-20-2008 at 09:19 AM

Rob,

How could I have forgotten about the bees? We were swarmed with them this past summer. Our foot bowl was mighty popular with them as well, so popular that we finally had to give it up to them.

They were drowning in it, so we gave them a float, then added a boat and a dolphin. We went with the nautical theme.

Here is an idea that may be of interest...
How about one or two of the golf shoe wipers you see in country clubs.
They sell those at Smart & Final, Home Depot, Lowes, for the lowest prices. If you are in Mexico, catalog purchases are out of the question. Seen the brushes in many of them. The on that is the hardest to remember is to walk in the house or RV bearfoot.
Hope this refreshes the thread to it's original content.

I have a neighbor who uses that idea. Says it works OK but that his biggest problem is what gets blown in with the afternoon breeze that comes off the water. I keep telling him to do what we did on the bottom of our doors.

Works pretty good IMHO. But what do I know...

Santiago - 9-20-2008 at 09:48 PM

I don't golf but is this like astro turf? Not a bad idea. I made fun of the carpet idea but I currently have about 20 sq ft of carpet right before my steps (been there for 8 or 9 years) and it does a pretty good job as long as you sweep it off.
