Does anyone have them? Thanks. JK

Yes, someone does...........

N 26' 04.917
W 111' 19.481

Are they open? We do miss them. First they moved to san lucas and then to loreto.....I havent had a scallop burger in over 3 years:(

ncampion - 9-19-2008 at 05:46 PM

They're open, however they keep variable hours. Best place to eat in Loreto, hard to believe that Alex and Imelda can put on such a good feed way out there with no power or water.

I have centered the Wikipedia map on the coordinates posted above. Click on "coordinates" to view map.

Can this possibly be El Picazon? This is about 8 miles north of Loreto on a dirt road.

Yep! that's it.

What a great satellite image ... a full screen instead of the partial screen on Googlemaps! Wikimapia.org, great site... thanks!

oxxo - 9-20-2008 at 04:50 AM

What is nice about Wikimapia is that you can name places and then save......which I have now done with El Picazon Restaurant. If you want to identify and name a specific place for Nomads, you can do the same by registering with Wikimapia. They do not send unsolicited email. It's a terrifiic resource.

Perfect! Hopefully they will be open when I kayak by! Thank you.

Yes, good stuff... Thank you oxxo!

I am putting names to the mission sites... For San Borja, someone else (Spanish) plotted an empty field many miles away from the mission and called that 'San Borja'!? I locate the ruins or buildings, outline the area and put the sites name there.

Found a few more strips of high resolution have been added, alas but not yet Mision Santa Maria area!

oxxo..... Actually, it is only about 3 miles north of Loreto, but the first time you make the trek it seems like at least 8. It is worth the trip, however.

Now I'm confused. According to the scale at the bottom left of the Wikipedia map it is about 5 miles. Do I have the right place mapped?

If you sign up as a "level 2" user, you can edit and/or delete erroneous locations. I have found a number of errors in locations of various places.

Someone asked me in a U2U how to enter a specific lat/lon. I didn't give a complete answer. Just go to any old Wikimapia map. Change the lat/lon data in the URL at the top of the page and hit the "refresh" tab. The map will then center at your desired, new lat/lon.

This is the power of the Internet. If we can start locating and naming some of the favorite locations on a map, a picture is worth 1000 directional words. If you want to keep some place secret......don't put it on the map.

If you want to show someone a spot without naming and saving it, just center the crossairs at that spot on the Wikimapia map, cut and paste the url, and send in an email. Recipiant can then zoom in an out on the map to find the relation to surrounding areas.

Enjoy!

oxxo,
Do I understand this right? If you change the URL in the existing data, it changes in Wikimapia's site? If that's the case, what would nasty folks ( we have a world full of them ) keep from changing proper defined sites to a totally wrong one? Just curious and probably have this wrong?

vandenberg - 9-21-2008 at 10:36 AM

Screwed up on the quote bit, but you should get the picture.

Yes, that is my understandng. So the site could be subject to vandalism. I haven't found that to be the case so far. The mistakes I found have been honest mistakes, close but not spot on. I know that Wikimapia monitors "level 2" use very closely. They don't give that designation to just anyone, but I'm not sure what their criteria is. I have been applying for that designation for about 6 months now and still have not been accepted. Perhaps you need to make a certain number of contributions that have not been challenged. I don't know. I would hope that "level 2" designation is given to DavidK because we all know his level of knowledge and committment to Baja. That is why I am trying to make sure that I have Picazon located properly. I wouldn't want a bunch of Nomads driving up to some poor campesino's rancho saying, "What's for dinner?"

ncampion - 9-21-2008 at 11:42 AM

That's the correct location, I personally marked the waypoint on my GPS when I was there one time. A slight correction on the name however, it is actually "La" not "El". Thanks for all the info on the use of this site, I love mapping software.

oxxo..... I just looked at your link to the satellite image and it looks like what you have identified as La Picazon is, in fact, La Picazon. Where were you measuring your distance to Loreto from? If it was from el centro it may well be about 5 miles. From the northern outskirts of town I think it is probably closer to 3. I will check it (distance on the road) the next time I go out.
If you move south to the marina in your image you will see a boat just leaving. That is my boat. If you zoom in closely you can see that I am waving at the camera.
