You mean to lift it more than the factory provided height adjustment? Not sure when the stopped offering that, but it seems to me my '87 4WD Subaru wagon had front and rear height adjustment.

Really bummed that Subaru ended the 4WD line and went to AWD, no low range, etc.

Best to do a Google search... but I will look for you!

DK....already looked....there are places in Australia that do lifts (looking for a 2" or 3" body lift kit).........a bit far for me to drive. Looking for someone local, so/cal that might have lift kits.......I can do the install here at home ...... thanks

David K - 9-30-2008 at 05:35 PM

Are you trying to put bigger tires than the 13" ? You get into gear-ratio/ power issues if so.

I have gotten a Subaru Brat and my wagon all the way into Matomi Canyon back in '78 and Mexray got his in there in 2001... all on 13" tires...

About 4 miles from the oasis:

A little further:

There was some 'mods' done... Mike Humfreville was riding with Mexray in the Brat... To help with ground clearance, Mike moved to the bed of my truck, where I set up my camping chair for him to sit in, facing back. In this photo taken by elgatoloco, You can see Mike's head above the cab of my Tacoma... following my truck into the Matomi Narrows is Mexray in the Brat:

Hmmm... well, they are in Oz (Australia) and it looks good... I see mostly 14" tires (tyres) mentioned... Are you prepaired for the transmission work involved. Having all that ground clearance but no power to roll the tires may be an issue? If there are any Subaru mechanics in your area, I would definetly chat with them about all this... Keep getting details.

Too funny! Definitely next year. The Baja Grande 2008 t-shirt order is going to set me back. I need $$ for inventory...

David K - 10-5-2008 at 08:34 AM

Ken, if you have been to a recent Expo... You would have no problem parting with twenty bucks for parking and admission... or catching a ride with another... There is just so much to see and take in... It is totally up your alley... way more than mine! Jeeps and Toyotas are probably the two most well represnted brands there for after market equipment. It is several buildings full of vehicles and off road hardware... and it is in your back yard!

TW drives down from Bakersfield and Squarecircle drives up from El Cajon... because it is really that good!

I will take photos to share as before, but I can't begin to do it justice...

Baja Angel and I are leaving in about an hour or so... Have a great Sunday, everyone!

2008 OFF ROAD EXPO PHOTOS... coming soon!

We had a great time... saw many cool things... visited with Neal Johns, The squarecircle & Blanche, John M, and TW... Surfer Jim called me to say he came yesterday to see the show.

Photos, soon...

surfer jim - 10-6-2008 at 04:27 PM

Thought the show was "OK"......really didn't see anything that wasn't there last year....except for all the jeep stuff.....

Thought there was less buggies and prerunners.....lots more jeep suspension exhibits.......went Saturday and thought a lot less people around (maybe it was the weather?)

TMW - 10-6-2008 at 05:14 PM

I didn't think the crowds were as big Sunday as previous years either, maybe the economy or maybe it was spread around thru more buildings. There were lots of Jeeps and not as many Toyota FJ setups as last year. But there seem to be more Toyota Tundra trucks on display with a wide array of setup kits. I had a good time looking and meeting Nomads. Walker Evens was at his booth signing autographs and Sal Fish was doing the same across from the BFG booth.

Not sure if this trail is full-size friendly. It will be tight, but with 35" tires and 4WD, we can definitely make a try at it (on Mission Impossible). The Mission Impossible trail is the only section that will be of real challenging stuff.

Hi Ken,

The photos are coming... but since you are semi hijacking TW's thread to talk about Baja Grande '08... Let me remind you, the The 2008 BAJA 1000 is running on the day you are taking the gang to San Felipe:
Day 1 (Nov. 22) - Drive to San Felipe, rest.
Day 2 (Nov. 23) - Drive to Gonzaga Bay, rest.

The race begins Nov. 21 and runs for 31 hours from when each racer starts (6+ am to Noon+pm) and runs well into the 22nd. Crowds will be thick in San Felipe as the race does go through town this year... See TW's Baja 1000 thread for the map of the course or print it off Score-International's site. Just FYI!;D

TMW - 10-7-2008 at 07:35 AM

If you look close at the Jeep pictures above there is a great looking white Toyota following behind in case the Jeeps get into trouble.

PHOTOS!

David K - 10-7-2008 at 09:29 AM

I took about 90 photos at the Expo and at the Hot Rod museum located in the Pomona Fairplex... Mickey Thompson's 4 engine Challenger and The Famous Hudson Hornet (recent star in the Pixar movie 'Cars') are included... I have about 34 to share, starting with the Baja Nomads who met up for some laughs: TW, Neal Johns, The squarecircle (Roy & Blanche), John M, Baja Angel...

David,

Thanks for posting the photos. I couldn't help but notice a lot of Lowrance GPS units. Did anyone ask what mapping programs they use in Baja with those?

De nada Ken,

The Lowrance BIG SCREEN GPS is pretty much in all the of road racers when I looked at them... I don't know the program, but perhaps through the SCORE web site or another Nomad it could be found?

Generally it is just the race course directions and hazzards displayed, I believe... Not the details of a topo map like the Baja Expeditioner that can be downloaded into a Nuvi or eTrex Legend.

Ken you can purchase a detailed topo map for the Lowrance GPS systems from PCI. It includes the entire peninsula, all towns, and much more...

or you can run OziXplorer software from the GPS to a laptop and live track in that method as well. OZI Xplorer utilizes high-resolution map files of the entire peninsula...

we've been using these two systems in the lowrance for about 4 years...works well:biggrin:

tripledigitken - 10-7-2008 at 02:32 PM

Is the PCI software only for Lowrance or will it run on Garmin products?

Is that software the reason you and others use the Lowrance units?

Thanks for the info.

Ken

Neal Johns - 10-7-2008 at 02:41 PM

The software made by Bicimapas is made for either Garmin or Lowrance (topo maps). Bring money. Great maps, though.
http://www.bicimapas.com.mx/Mexico_Atlas_GPS_Low_En.htm

tripledigitken - 10-7-2008 at 02:58 PM

Neal,

Are you saying that Desert Bull was referring to Bicimaps not PCI?

Wanted to investigate what the pros' are using. I have LB for my Garmin and it is OK. Not up to the Garmin Software though IMO.

Thanks,

Ken

I'm not worried. Our Jeeps drive so slowly, that by the time we reach our destination and bed down for the night, all of the excitement and people will have passed. If the place is crowded, we can camp in the hills. We're fully equipped so no worries one bit. Nah.

Neal Johns - 10-7-2008 at 08:41 PM

tripledigitken, no, I was just letting you know where you could get some Mexico/Baja maps for a Lowrance GPS. I know nothing about what software the racers use.

I like the Lowrance unit, buy me one???:lol::lol:
