Man says he survived beating by police in Cabo

Shark18 - 9-21-2008 at 02:30 PM

"One week after an Oregon man died in a Mexican jail, a new case is coming forward of abuse by Mexican police.

Police beating Mark Adamson, 44, of Scottsdale, AZ, says that during a birthday trip to Cabo San Lucas he was detained by police.

He says there was no reason for it. A vehicle pulled up, uniformed police jumped out, and grabbed him.

“They were taking me out of town,” Adamson explained. “ One cop would look at the other through the rear view mirror, and I’m like, 'something is going on.'”

Adamson, who stand 6’5” jumped into action.

“I reached over, unlocked the door, pushed the cop out. Than I took the other guy’s gun, and now I’m sitting in a police car with a gun in my hand.”

Adamson was convinced they were going to kill him. He ran and hid in an abandoned home, until police dogs found him.

“They handcuffed me and one guy had at me. And than another, they were just beating me, punching me. They beat the tar out of me.”

He was detained for three days, until his girlfriend got in touch with the US Consulate.

“I will never go back again” he said.

The reason he has come forward is after hearing the case of Sam Botner, whose family believes, he was killed by guards.

News Channel 8 tried to contact the US Consulate, but they told us they couldn’t help us. "

Gee! I didn't know dealing drugs in Mexico was against the law!

bajajudy - 9-21-2008 at 04:12 PM

That video crashed my Firefox

DENNIS - 9-21-2008 at 04:15 PM

Why would this man lie about this? What would be his motive? Where does it say he was dealing drugs?

I hear that's what you say every time you get busted in Mexico.

Yesterday you busted Osprey's balls for being inappropriate so, I have to ask you what this is all about. What is it you are looking for here? Fun and games or serious discourse. Give us your preference 'cause they're both available.

Osprey - 9-21-2008 at 04:53 PM

Just rumors without facts. Shark, next time you find anything like this you text message CNN (Robin Meade) and the whole wide world will see what you think is important (maybe, if they run it, if it's newsworthy). Get back to us when you find out what really happened: were the cops just looking to steal the guy's shoes? Scare him for a few laughs? Kidnapping? Random cop beheading just for fun? Love the drama. And the hits just keep on comin'.

I was busting Oxxo's balls for being inappropriate. There is nothing in that article or the video that indicates that poor man was dealing drugs. He was released after 3 days without charges, after getting the crap beat out of him by the cops. The cops were driving him for 20 minutes out of town, the wrong way from the police station. Oxxo want to somehow make light of it all and convince us that it was probably OK for the cops to beat up that guy so he can rationalize why he is in love with Baja? That was just a little payback, so oxxo knows what it's like to make false accusations against people he doesn't even know.

OK? Fair enough? And by the way, I don't have to answer to you. WTF are you? The board snitch?

Does it really matter what

Bajajack - 9-21-2008 at 05:08 PM

he did or didn't do. What's amazing after what he did, "causing the cops to lose face" is that they didn't kill him.

And the fact they released him in three days without any charges is down right unbelievable.

There's a lot more to this episode.

In a way, I think this guy lucked out. This happened only one week after the Cabo cops killed Sam Botner and 6 of their homeboys were put under arrest for murder. If it weren't for that, I think that guy would have been a goner.

Whew! That a relief. Good thing even you admit you're not a GOOD enemy.

Think about it.

Right. The video of the guy's bruises and black eye was just Hollywood makeup. The fact that the American consulate intervened to get him released, is just an urban fiction.

Nothing gets by you, Osprey. No siree Bob. You're way too smart for all of that.

It seems that most of the loudest posters here are just excuse makers for the corrupt jerks that inhabit the police forces of Baja.No matter what is posted here, the same people pipe in their antiamerican and promexican crap. Its always the same jerks.

Osprey - 9-21-2008 at 05:27 PM

One of our long-time respected board member said the video crashed one of her computer systems. Since that's the first in over a zillion videos on this board, I didn't run it. If I had I might have been convinced I saw a gringo with a black eye. I'm not smart. I'm not way too smart for most anything. I'm not trying to use this board as a playpen for my weird agenda and those who have witnessed my posts/posture on the board for the last few years know all about that. You're picking on the wrong old foggies here hombres. Keep it up. Escalate this until we just start to wonder "what ever happened to those nasty, argumentative children?"

What you mean is

With regards to the guy that was beat to death in San Jose, the wife was quoted as saying that he wasn't doing anything, the cops just came and took him away. He had a right to resist arrest.

She forgot to mention that he had just attacked a resident and stabbed him several times.

His father said he was a good guy. He cut firewood for all the old ladies in Oregon.

He forgot to mention that he had traces of meth, cocaine, and marijuana in his system.

The police in Cabo are not randomly rounding up gringos and tasking them for a ride. There is more to this story than what this guy is saying. Even the American Consulate isn't defending him. Let's wait for the whole story to come out.

All due respect, Oxxo, they don't defend anybody....ever. Not their job. Unfortunatly, some people think it is.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but the Mexican prosecutor investigating Sam Botner's death in a Mexican jail says evidence gathered over the past week has left him convinced that Sam Botner was beaten to death at the hands of police officers.

The whole story is laid-out here:

The guy took the cops gun, and didn't expect to get his butt kicked. That guy is lucky to be alive. In the States that guy would have gotten two taps to the chest and one to the head.

I could be wrong here but I don't think anyone here doubts that he was beaten to death by the police. I think people are casting doubt on whether he was just an innocent guy who the police just randomly snatched and beaten.

he was from phx area.

capt. mike - 9-22-2008 at 06:43 AM

a contractor. it has been covered all over the news here. he comes across as pretty credible i think.

he says he is not going back. can't say as i blame him.

mexico has a lot of problems to fix internally if they want to keep people returning or even coming the 1st time.

most American pilots shudder at the thought of taking their planes to mexico. all based on 50 years of horror stories.

Over and over again I see people blaming the victim .

I think by blaming the victim we feel safer,

Because, lord knows we are pristine and free of impurities

And it makes us feel safer, somehow ...
