Scorpion bay is a world class surf destination.

Huh???
Just back from a week of surf to La Libertad in El Salvador.

I would have to disagree with you on this unless world class =s 2 foot or less 90% of the year.

Just IMO though

maybe their idea of world class means 100 boards in the water, half of those being 12' long or 6" thick....

Yeah, I think the edit should read "Scorpion Bay is a surf destination".

Although it is a beautiful place, we love hanging with Juan at Casa Juan y Juan at San Juanico and they have some epic photos on the wall of when it goes off.

Whats that saying, "every dog has the sun shine on its back once in life".

The only way you can score on this place is to stay there for a month. I have caught several fantastic swells there over a 12 year period, and have tried many times to connect 3rd to Bambi's - and I have the scars to prove it! We started going there as Jaime was building the cantina and he lived in a trailer at the base of 3rd with his wife and kid. Alot of folks were really peeed about that cantina - none of them locals - until the place started to take off. Then some locals wanted in on it. Got political. The cantina changed hands and the Dave & Laurie era starts. The wind'n crew shows up - then it gets wild. The racers grow roots (they were always there, just ask Chino) and things get hairy - they even started a website. The government gets involved - now things are hopping - a real estate boom, you can actually buy ice in town! Restaurants pop up - a pizza place of all things! The roads get paved - talk of a marina, a hotel, re-open the airstrip - oh my, this is just too much! Meanwhile, rusty shrimp boats that haven't seen a shrimp in years continue to anchor in the bay at night. Hmmm..suspicious - and San Juanico days still goes on.

My memories of the place include rights so long you get cramps in your calves; c-ckfights; spearfishing halibut at night at the estuary; hammerheads offshore; sharing ballenas with the cooperativa; burying hundreds of pounds of fish after a 3 day red tide; bugs, bugs, bugs, bugs; and abalone!; moondust; coming across a male african lion on the road in (the circus bus broke down so we helped them out), ridiculous washboard; ridiculous star gazing; and best of all watching my kids become accomplished surfers and watermen/women.

Now it's time for other people to get memories - I've moved on.....

Went there on a camping trip in 88. It was cold, windy and deserted. Except for a surfer here and there sitting in their car waiting for a wave.

I enjoyed reading about scorpion bay in this thread... Any other people have experiences to share? For example, are there other places nearby that you would suggest that can be accessed by 4x4 or by boat? What do you know about the new marina in the distant future? What about electricity and water seems there is a limited utilities so is most new planning going to be off grid solar and wind? Can you travel the coast in 4x4 to Asuncion or next pueblos?

Thx I am really interested in some camping, surfing and fisihing in small towns and remote places?

I was there twice last year and got good waves both times. With today's surf reports and forecasts it's easy.
