How are the BUGS

Joelt - 10-2-2008 at 04:41 PM

I was wondering how the bugs are in the areas that got rain recently. I'll be heading down to Punta Chivato next week and want to be prepared. Thanks

Bruce R Leech - 10-2-2008 at 05:27 PM

take lots of repellent

Russ - 10-2-2008 at 06:10 PM

What Bruce said x2! I've been hiding for 3 weeks now the bugs LOVE me! I'm going gnats! Even with Off they drive me indoors after about 10 minutes. Last week it was 3 minutes so it's getting better. By the time you get here it may be tolerable. Of all my friends I get bothered the worst. So if you're lucky and not bothered much you'll be fine. I haven't had too many mosquitos so that's good. Just all the tiny ones and some of those are gegenes (sp).

here on the bay the gnats are gone on the beach...

not many mosquitos this year either...

now if you go into the bushes at dusk...you'll be EATEN ALIVE!!!:o:o

Thanks for the replys. The bugs don't bother me nearly as much as my wife. If I stay close to her I'll be all right. We'll be bringing truck load of bug spray. Thanks again.

Bobos are bad on the east cape rght now. They swarm around you and drive you nuts. They don't bite, but they love to fly up your nose or into your ears. We bought bag nets at REI that fit over our hats and sinch around our necks. Helps a lot when working in the garden. We look like bee keepers.

You might start taking B-1 before you go. I used to be a mosquito magnet, but since I routinely take B-1, starting before I head to a buggy area, I rarely get bitten. My Dr. inlaws were the ones who suggested the B-1. Here is a quote from a doctor about taking B-1

"Some studies suggest that taking thiamine (vitamin B1) 25mg to 50 mg three times per day is effective in reducing mosquito bites. This safe vitamin apparently produces a skin odor that is not detectable by humans, but is disagreeable to pregnant mosquitoes (Pediatric Clinics of North America, 16:191, 1969). It seems to be especially effective for those people with large allergic reactions. Thiamine takes about 2 weeks before the odor fully saturates the skin. Garlic may work in the same way (except, of course, the odor is detectable by humans), but I have seen no scientific studies supporting this. One recent study was unable to demonstrate that garlic was an effective mosquito repellant (Med Vet Entomol, 2005, 19(1)84-9.)"

Old tropical remedy that can work for some or maybe it was just an excuse. Smoke a cigar. I guess that the heavy smoke is not tolerated well by insects since they have an open circulatory system.Cigar afficiantos ,give it a try and report back!

It also appears to repel some wives.

Guess I'll try that B-1.

I thought this thread was going to be about lobster (aka 'bugs')!

I have been taking 50 mg of B-1 (3,333% of the RDA) daily and have still been bitten... Now, I read this Dr.'s info and it says to take 25-50 mg THREE times a day! (up to 10,000% of the Rec. Daily Allowance)... WOW.:wow:

I wonder what else that will do?;)
