info please on HOW TO register a car in South Dakota

rhintransit - 10-3-2008 at 02:52 PM

I know this has been addressed before but the posts generally turn into moral, legal, ethical brawls rather than giving useful information. please refrain, if at all possible, from such detours. All I want to know, preferrably from someone who has done it, is "how to" and any suggestions/tips about the process.

I have been given two resources, both mail forwarding outfits, Americas Mailbox and Alternative Resources. can anyone recommend others? u2u if you prefer.

Baja&Back - 10-3-2008 at 02:58 PM

America's Mailbox in Rapid City is who we used. Lowest price & friendly service. They actually have an office, rather than running out of a garage.
We happened to drive thru Rapid city, so went to the DMV ourselves, but AM will do the legwork for you for 25 bucks or so.

Middle man??? You dont need no stinkin' middleman to do this!

Here is a list of county treasurers in SD. Call one up and see if they will register vehicles by mail. They will give you the instructions you need, if they do.

http://www.state.sd.us/drr2/Assessors/treasurers.htm

Baja&Back - 10-3-2008 at 09:43 PM

Sorry, Hook, Pennington County Treasurer's office would NOT issue a vehicle registration unless we had a working South Dakota delivery address. They stated they will NOT mail annual renewals out of state. Mail services are considered valid addresses for residency but PO boxes are not.
I imagine all SD counties work the same way, seeing as vehicle registrations are administered under state regulations.

Hook - 10-3-2008 at 11:04 PM

Well, things have changed since you did it, then. I handled the whole thing through Clay County and I also talked to the treasurer in Minnehaha County last week and they are processing out of state addresses as well. There is lots of info about Clay County on the net. Our SD titles ACTUALLY SHOW OUR OUT OF STATE ADDRESS ON THEM.

We also procured our SD driver's licenses using a PO Box, but you do have to be there in person to take the eye exam and turn in your license from another state.

bajalou - 10-4-2008 at 08:03 AM

Call Clay County Treasurers office and they will give you all the info. Other counties do things differently. PHONE: 605-677-7123

Or go to their website http://www.claycountysd.org/ and look at treasurers office.

It works just like Hook said and has for years.

Perhaps this is a dumb question.:?:

Why are so many getting registration and licenses from SD?

Is it all about low fees?

Ken

it has nothing to do with the fees. see your u2u for brief explanation.
I hesitate to answer this on the forum (go back my original post starting the thread). if you are really interested, and want to wade through 7 pages, see the last thread on the topic.

I registered another car just last month with SD. Call the Clay Co number. You'll get a live person who is pleasant and helpful. You'll be told which form to print and mail in along with the amount due. A couple weeks later you'll get your new plates and registration.

Because people don't want to go to the trouble to get their car smogged even though it cuts down on polution. The idea is that they want to do their part to increase pollution in Baja.

Do the right thing for future generations, get your car smogged regardless of where it is registered. You are either part of the solution, or you are the problem.

dodging taxes, fees, pollution and insurance laws. you see a SD plate on the highway, give it room, as irresponsibility is near you.

It is 1933 miles (about 40 hours of driving) from La Paz, BCS to Boise, ID (our U.S. residence.)

Driving 3,966 miles roundtrip would burn about 147 gallons of gas in our Camry and 283 gallons in our Blazer. Fuel costs would run about $1400 @ $3.25 gal.

Figuring 10 hour driving days (more than what we usually do), we would have at least 12 nights in motels @ $50 per night for another $600.

Add in the costs of 8000 miles of wear and tear per year on our vehicles.

It would also require about 16 full days of driving every year.

I cannot see how anyone is getting scammed here. Maybe the guy in the red van in Boise that smogs the car for $30?

Sorry, I had to reply to the accusation that all we want is to pollute our air in La Paz because we are too lazy to spend over 2 weeks and $2000 every year to perform a test to tell me our well tuned vehicles are running well.

Nice knock on all the citizens of South Dakota.

Maybe the mexicans are being robbed. you want to live in mexico, live legally, and pay fair share of taxes for government services you rely upon, pay import fee per your apparent import of cars to mexico. be legal, instead of illegal alien.

We are perfectly legal. Mexico does not require that either of our vehicles be imported, only that they have valid U.S. tags. If the law changes, we'll abide by it. And what does this have to do with slamming all the citizens of South Dakota?

I don't know. Might be I am not partial to being called a robber, an illegal alien, a cheat, irresponsible, a scam artist, a polluter and lazy. Although I will admit to being lazy.

I believe the original question posted has been answered. I'll let it rest with what I've already presented.

You may be legal in Mexico, but do you get your cars smogged every two years? It is the right environmental thing to do. Just because Mexico doesn't require smogging does that mean we who have cars here should not have our car smogged? Just because some Mexicans throw garbage and trash out their car window, does that make it right for us to do the same?

bajaguy - 10-4-2008 at 04:36 PM

Does South Dakota require an Emission Control test, either statewide or in certain non-attainment areas????

That is not a good excuse. You are not telling the whole story. I understand that Boise may be your official "residence of record," but how much of the year do you actually "live" there? You can have your car smogged in San Ysidro if you want. BMG, you know it is the responsible thing to do for the environment.

Cypress - 10-4-2008 at 04:54 PM

Is getting "smogged" the same as getting smoke blown up your burro?

bajalou - 10-4-2008 at 04:56 PM

Where I have a car registered in Calif and where have a car registered in AZ, a periodic smog test is NOT required. Just because you come from a area that requires it, does not mean that all of us do. And if you want to spend the time/money to test your cars, by all means do so. Smog tests have absolutely nothing to do with me registering cars in SD.

And that is really sad. It cuts down on pollution to have your car smogged. Why do you want to create more pollution? Does everyone need more government to force them to do the right thing? Do the right thing volutarily, have your cars smogged.
