Rosarito residents unsettled by crime

Woooosh - 10-4-2008 at 11:13 AM

Sometimes we nomads need to depend on each other to communicate what the media can't, won't or deoesn't want to know about.

This is about kidnappings/extortions in Rosarito Beach- so if you aren't interested, please don't read it.

My Mexican neighbor came to me for help becasue a man who identified himself by name and as a commandante for the AFO, telephoned him to demand 3 million peseos or his family would die. He knew their names, ages, addresses, and his bank accounts. As you can imagine- the family is beside themselves.

If that's not bad enough, when they went to the PGJE to report the extortion the detectives woudln't even take awritten report. They were told the police were too busy trying to recover the people already kidnapped in Rosarito to have time to prevent one from happening.

Not happy with that response, the family reached out to cousins until they found a commandante in teh TJ poilice wh would tel them the truth. He told them it was not the AFO. The AFO only demands money in dollars, not pesos. He also said they do not call you- they intercept your vehicle, take you for a ride and lay out their demands in person so you know there is no doubt about who they are or what they will do if not paid. He also said the intelligence systems in the police to prevent and solves crimes is a myth- the narcos have more money, brain power and technology than the police does.

I fell really bad for this nice family. The father hung up on the caller after calling him some choice words.. He isn't happy about someone demanding what he worked his whole life for. It's very unsettling to know so many real, local mexican people are having problems with the narcos.

Sounds like these people need to hire the Seven Samauri.....

Not a joke. I think that if he was threatened, he should take it seriously. Either get protection or move his family.

What does this guy do to be a target????

Not to get on a rant, but the "victims" need to start taking some action against these slimeballs.

I know it always turns back to the victim having done something out of the ordinary. All you need to be is breathing with a bank account and you are a possible target right now. Their bank (banamex) hand delivers their ststements and the deliveryman just tosses their bank statements into their yard. They think someone got a statement and then passed it onto someone else. (I told them to call the bank and switch to e-statements instead of paper).

Then maybe it's time they started doing something about it

Other than demeaning & belittling the guy & the Mexican people as a whole, do you have any constructive advice for him? He DID go attempt to get help from two different police agencies & he sought advice from Whoooosh.

Your compassion for the Mexican people is truly underwhelming!:no:

Maybe Dave was writing about the narcos?

longlegsinlapaz - 10-4-2008 at 12:42 PM

There is that possibility, but it certainly came across to me as a slam against the Mexican people for continuing to "allow" whatever criminal element to ride roughshod over them & their families; to perpetuate or condone through fear, intimidation & lack of action. His response implied fatalistic acceptance to me. If I read it wrong, I'm sure Dave will correct my interpretation.

No, that pretty much says it.

If Mexico wasn't such an insular society I might be a bit more charitable.

The body count this week just jumped to 53 for TJ

They are just getting warmed up folks. As the DEA and the Mexican government start to tighten the noose, the narco terrorists will step up the terror campaign against the people of Mexico.

Colombia had great beach communities years back. Wonder how those homes are selling there these days.....

Nothing like the stifling level of American cultural arrogance to surface at just the right time. Americans advising Mexican residents on how things work in their own country. Never stops does it?

Advising?

Hardly. I would never presume to advise any Mexican about anything.

Ever.

I was clear on your position, Dave. My post was directed at legs who thinks that American expertise and persepctive is what Mexico lacks. Yeah, right.

American advice for Baja is often wrong, but never uncertain.
