Most sources recommend only suction until your bite is diagnosed.

Arroyo,

My understanding is that bite kits are a waste of money. The time it takes to use one is better spent getting to help. Most of the heamotoxin is not going to be close enough to the surface of the skin to suck out.

Better to get a antivenin, there is a superb Mexican made one called Antivipmyn, it is a powder and keeps a long time. You can get it at any Del Sol farmacia. it costs around $80 a dose, well worth it. We have 2 in our bathroom cabinet.

astrobaja,

Do you know of anyone who has had to use the antivenin?

Thanks,

Astrobaja -

How is the medication administered? References to it on the web only talk about injectable liquid form.

Been working as a wildland FF for 30 years and have never seen or known any who has been bit by a snake, (includes stints in the Mojave and the south east US, but the razor that came in the Govt. issue had many other uses, good luck.

I'm interested mainly because good buddy Neal Johns seems to go out of his way to seek out and tick off rattlers. But then, maybe that's only when I'm on trips with him. Hmmmm.

If you buy a snakebite kit, please add a quart of Jack Daniels...for medicinal purposes only

There was an extensive thread on this, Antivipmyn, a few months back and included this picture. The reading I did said one of the reasons that it was superior is that it could be injected straight into the muscle. the old med was an IV push. This med uses a larger protein and stays in the blood stream longer. But still you may need several injection. If the antivipmyn flushes thru the system to soon the symtoms of the snake may return fully. So at least two vials and that should give you time to find Medical help. I'm no expert so don't take this info to the bank but it is what I understood from the research I read. Also the newest stuff I read said that dogs should recover if vaccinated. but I still would have one vial on hand just in case.

Paulina and all,

Yeah I started that thread about this antivenin a while back. Mostly because we are so far from medical help here in the sierra. I do not know anyone who has every had to use this product but a good buddy of mine who pals around with herpatologists from all over the world claims they all think this is THE product to use.
Russ you are right 2 would be the minimum to use initialy after the bite, more may be needed later. The antivenin comes with a bottle that contains the powder and another containing the injectable saline.
Still the chances of being bitten are pretty slim, unless you saunter through the chaparral with a ipod blaring in your ear ;>;)

Don't get bit !!! Serious. If your in snake country watch where you put your hands and feet. Wildland ff for 38 years and backwoods fisherman in rattlesnake areas. Never been bit.

As a post-cautionary first aid tactic, should you not make a tourniquet to cut off the flow of the snake venom then use an anti-venom? Make a small cut from the two puncture wounds and suck as much venom as you can out. Then take the knife and open the plastic cover off a bottle of Tequila and suck it down then inject the anti-venom and then eat the worm and watch the pretty light show...

For Interest Goggle up :The Rattlesnake Capitol of the World" Sweetwater Texas.
Generally the Festival attracts about 30,000 People.
On of the men involved had suffered 42 Snakebites before he died of Old age.
I have personally seen his Arms. He use to have Rattlers in two or three large Boxes as well as his Refrigd. You could take your choice.

I just skinned out and ate my 3rd Rattler since moving into our place here in Amarillo. They are all about 4 Feet long with4 to 5 Rattles. Not too fat and real tasty when fixed on the BBQ.

You should never have trouble if you keep your eyes open and stay away from brushy Debris and listen, as a Rattler will always warn you before a strike.
